He had to put all his past decisions out there so he could commit himself to moving past them. The fact that it's inconvenient for him to tell them is the reason why he had to - admitting your faults and trying to be selfless isn't naturally easy in general, so if being good and building relationships with past enemies was easy for Zuko, that'd read as cheap storytelling and it would be a disservice to his character arc.

And the thing that changed Aangs mind about Zuko, in the end, was remembering how he accidentally hurt Katara- and Zuko specifically pointed out that he knew that fire was a dangerous element and that he wanted to improve his control so he didn’t hurt others. That’s exactly the kind of teacher Aang wanted, so when Zuko said that, I think it’s what convinced him!! This show is great with how it calls back to past events pretty subtly, working in everything to play a role in each character’s choices

@@oscarmartinez-fg9et humongous spoilers for the show for anyone reading!!!!!!!! also wow i wrote like a whole essay lmao my b I was kinda thrown by the lion turtle on my first watch, definitely! But if you look super carefully you can see lion turtles throughout the series- for example, in wan shi tong’s library & throughout the house of piandao. And I still wasn’t sure about it, seems kinda OP and all, but I think about it this way now: Aang is 12. He just woke up from a life where he was trained as a pacifist, and hasn’t had that much time to separate himself from that train of thought. Also, he took it super super to heart. It’s true that he probably did kill people- like the people he yote off of the northern air temple- but Aang probably doesn’t realize that, or is suppressing it, and in either case straight up intentionally killing someone would be super hard &probably horrific for him. And when we find out later lion turtle lore, it giving Aang that knowledge makes sense! And i’m pretty sure lion turtles only appear to share knowledge with someone worthy/super determined/something like that, so it suddenly appearing for Aang makes sense because he was both of those things. Finally, while it still does seem kind of sudden, I see it more as a final “screw you” to the fire nation from Aang. Everyone has been telling him the ways of his people are weak, that you can’t win as a pacifist, and that therefore Air Nomads inherently cannot win. So by winning in a pacifist, nonviolent way, Aang is preserving his culture and showing the world that his culture is just as efficient/capable and worthy of respect as everyone else’s. also we do have to consider that it was intended as a kids show, and they couldn’t like, endorse murder as a problem solver, so there’s that too i guess Either way you’re right, the lion turtle was kinda wild, but I personally kinda like it now, even if I can understand why you might not :-) sorry for the long comment!!

Yeah, it makes complete sense why the Gaang was so hostile and distrustful of Zuko. Aside from their general history with him, *the last time* they saw him was back in Ba Sing Se and that wasn't exactly happy memories lol. And now after a recently failed invasion where the Fire Nation was expecting them, said enemy comes out of nowhere, tells you that they aren't your enemy anymore, and wants to now join you? If you ask me, that sounds pretty suspicious and the Gaang had every right to be skeptical. Yes, they needed a firebending teacher for Aang, but after everything that's happened, people honestly couldn't expect the Gaang to just welcome Zuko with open arms on his word alone that he's good. I wouldn't trust him! It's unrealistic. Zuko had to prove himself, and he did by the end. Katara being the most harsh and distrustful was also to be expected and very in-character of her. She had a very hard time giving Jet another chance after what he did, and with Zuko, she was the first person to trust him and what did she get for it? He not only betrayed her, but he also helped Azula kill Aang and take down Ba Sing Se. I would have a hard time trusting him after that as well. With that said, her threat at the end? Very chilling.

Iroh said that the stomach is the sea of chi. Also iroh once said that fire bending comes from the Breath and not the muscle. Breath control is an important part of firebending training, as Jeong Jeong made Aang practice it for hours at a time as his first exercise while training him. Zuko breath of fire has saved his life more than once in this series.

Many past episodes concerning Zuko's antagonistic relationship with Team Avatar are referenced. Sokka mentions when Zuko attacked their village in the Southern Water Tribe, a reference to "The Avatar Returns". Katara states that Zuko stole her mother's necklace to track the group down. This is a reference to both "Bato of the Water Tribe" and "Imprisoned", in which Zuko picked it up off the prison rig. Sokka mentions when Zuko hired Combustion Man to hunt down Aang, a reference to "The Headband". Toph also mentions when Combustion Man imprisoned her and Katara, a reference to "The Runaway". Zuko reminds Aang that the Avatar once asked if the two of them could be friends. This is a reference to "The Blue Spirit", when Aang recalls his past friendship with a Fire Nation boy named Kuzon. Aang asked if he and Zuko could have been friends had the circumstances been different. Another reference is made to this episode when Aang reveals to his friends that it was Zuko as the Blue Spirit who saved him when he was captured by Zhao. Katara mentions when Zuko took Azula's side against her and Aang, a reference to "The Crossroads of Destiny". Katara mentions when Zuko had them attacked by pirates, a reference to "The Waterbending Scroll". Sokka mentions when Zuko burned down Kyoshi Island, a reference to "The Warriors of Kyoshi". Aang mentions when Zuko tried to capture him at the Fire Temple, a reference to "Winter Solstice, Part 2: Avatar Roku". Katara makes references to when she and Zuko were imprisoned together in "The Crossroads of Destiny". Zuko references when he freed Appa in "Lake Laogai". Zuko's flashback shows him and Iroh in search of the Avatar in the Western Air Temple, merely a week after Zuko was banished. At this time, Zuko's wound was still healing and he had only begun his search, journeying to the air temples as a starting point. Katara's warning to Zuko mirrors Avatar Roku's warning to Fire Lord Sozin from "The Avatar and the Fire Lord", both speaking of one step out of line resulting in death. This is the first episode Admiral Zhao has been mentioned in since his death in "The Siege of the North, Part 2", aside Wan Shi Tong's allusion to Zhao in "The Library". The method of incapacitating Combustion Man by striking his third eye was used once by Toph in "The Runaway", though she did it accidentally. This is the last time Zuko is seen with his ponytail.

Wooo!! 😆👏👏👏 That ending with Katara 😨 she made my skin crawl just for saying that. It like confirmed to me that, That’s how much she truly cares about Aang. And I really didn’t blame her for getting into zuko’s face like that, she obviously delivered an execution speech 🤣 I cannot explain the relief I had felt when Zuko finally realized what he was doing. I wanted to leap through the roof when he boldly said about joining the avatar. I can’t Wait for the next EPISODE!!!!! 😆🔥

I have to keep reminding myself that Toph has been in the presence of Zuko only one time from the time she was introduced until this episode and even at that time, he was not attacking her directly (The Chase episode) which is why she is able to have the most unbiased opinion out of the group.

I like how Zuko didn't use his tragic past to justify anything he did, he took full accountability for his actions. Someone else woulda been like "So when I was 14, I spoke out of turn in a war meeting..." But Zuko worked for his redemption. If we're just gonna give villains a pass because of their tragic lives, there would be no villains left. Azula? Trained into a war weapon. Long Fang? Grew up poor and overlooked. Ozai? Had Firelord Azulon for a dad. Hama? Imprisoned in inhumane conditions. That old man that told on Haru? Probably wanted reward money because the people were being taxed unfairly. Those 3 girls that laughed at Toph? They grew up in a materialistic society.

@Leanna S. I was being sarcastic, tryna show that anyone's harmful actions can be rationalized...but it's still not enough to redeem them (even if we sympathize with them). Azula apologists for e.g always bring up their similar abuse to justify her actions or say she was cheated out of a redemption arc.

Something I really liked about Zuko this episode: he knows he's going to have to prove himself to the Gaang, and that they won't trust him for a while. He's socially awkward, but he understands that much. He doesn't like it and he's frustrated by it, but he accepts it. If he had rolled up and expected things to be fine, that would have been a massive eye roll for me. And the Gaang's reactions to him joining at the end all make sense. Aang is the most forgiving and knows he needs a firebending teacher. Toph, beyond being burned by Zuko when they first met, has been the least personally affected by Zuko and the Fire Nation in general, so she's fine with it. Sokka, for all his goofiness at times, is pragmatic. Where else are they going to find a firebender willing to teach Aang? Katara...she cares about Aang, and knows he needs to learn firebending. But she also feels personally betrayed by Zuko, not to mention Aang dying because of what Zuko did, so she tells him straight out- one toe out of line, and she'll kill him, no hesitation.

Aang is the realest. Even after all that, when he bowed to Zuko he used the fire nation hand gesture.

Ah, finally I can share some of my thoughts on this episode.: Somehow this always slipped past me and I never realized it but: when thinking of zuko's redemption i feel like most people especially think of katara forgiving zuko. which isn't a bad thing but i think some people overlook that aang also forgave zuko. now the little funny thing is the place. and we know avatar is pretty big on symbolism, right? so this didn't shock me but it took me YEARS to realize this. let's forget who zuko and aang are for a moment. that leaves us with a firebender and an airbender. which is the point. the episode is titled "The Western Air Temple" fittingly so because of location. yet there's more to it. A 100 years ago firebenders used a comets power to kill dozens, hundreds if not thousands of airbenders, including those that lived at the western air temple. yet almost exactly a 100 years later an airbender is forgiving a firebender at the exact place where dozens of his people, his friends and his family, died in cold blood at the hands of firebenders. don't tell me my sleep deprived brain is just making this up cause this actually pretty much defines their friendship; unlikely allies from opposing nations brought together by a bloody and violent war and ending up as lifelong friends. The Western Air Temple is the name of the episode because the end of the war began at the site where everything began. By the friendship between firebender and an airbender. And let's not forget, because these are bonus points: The Avatar and the Firelord (to be) forgive each other. After a 100 years. The story between the Avatar and Firelord came full circle.

What sucks is it’s for real zuko prepubescent years were spent looking for the avatar he doesn’t really know how to interact with people his own age. Even then he was royalty we see Azula doesn’t know How to talk to younger people either cuz she was always given whatever she wanted and was a pampered princess as we saw in the beach. So even if he hadn’t been banished he would still have issues. He is great at communicating though and can speak very eloquently because he was hanging with iroh for most of his life because he had nobody besides his mother and she left when he was around 7.
