The clam-as-dragon thing is an actual reference to a Chinese creature myth where they believed clams were shapeshifting dragons that created mirages. Much like the mandrakes that exist in actual real-life lore, and a creepy as hell upcoming one in a upcoming episode now that the gremlin that is Izutsumi joined.

I just love how Ryoko Kui cook this story! She manages to combine elements of high fantasy, feudal Japan, politics, human relationships, real concepts of biology, and everything works perfectly. You simply have a cat-girl with a sealed shinigami like the Reaper from Naruto, a Masterchef dwarf from Middle-earth, and an autistic knight. And it all works.

The Nightmare is interesting with it based on the Shin from Japanese mythology which are said to be dragons that take the form of clams when they enter water & they believed that it could breathe mirages which interestingly in Japanese the word mirages is “Shinkirō” which if you break it up can reference the creature Shin, then “ki” can mean breathe, & “rō” or “rou” can be short for “roukaku” meaning tower as in like a building or fortress which could be a reference to the clam shell

I like how unsexy they made Izutsumi, as the fantasy anime cat-girl. She's a cat. She has no manners, hawks hair-balls, eats what she wants, she's rude and crude, etc. She is pure cat personified. This is how a cat would act if you gave them a human body and sentience. Also, the one who put the collar curse on her was Toshiro's magic nanny, the one who summoned that big spider yokai. She knowingly left their teenage slave-girl to probably die. There's some sort of hypocrisy there, regardless of how this world's politics and views on slavery work. Marcille getting ostracized for bringing someone back from the dead to save their life, which we've seen so far as being common as dirt, but the magical nanny casually summons monsters and puts binding magic on slaves to keep them in-line. Inutade is also a slave, she doesn't appear to have a magic collar, but she's also a lot more compliant and agreeable.

Actually the Creature summoned by the spell is only supposed to Chase Izutsumi towards Maizuru. It wouldn't actually harm her, other people would be though, since the spells purpose is protection. The funny thing is that Maizuru actually made that spell to keep Shuro from getting lost when he was a kid (which likely traumatised the hell out of him). It was originally designed as precaution against being kidnapped by some of his Dad's enemies.

I think the current order of the Falin plan is: Plan A) Fix Falin back to normal somehow Plan B) kill or thwart the dungeon master elf person and hope that breaks all the spells/curse (or makes whoever kills them able to break them as the new Dungeon Master) Plan C) Get Falin out from under the DM's control in her current shape and help her regain her humanity even though she's a dragon/chicken/human hybrid the size of a damn house Plan D-Y) ANYTHING ELSE. Plan Z) kill Falin The 'whoops we did black magic and will be killed on sight is we leave the dungeon so...' plan right now probably has 2 options: Plan A) ....uhhhhh....? Plan B) Just live in the dungeon forever, or until the law against using black magic changes. Probably.

The magical curse was actually used as a way of keeping child Shuro from running off too, so I don't think it was considered dehumanizing to use of someone if it got used on one of the lords sons. I think Izutsumi is being treated as a servant, not an animal, which is still bad imo.

Makes a lot of sense that elves would keep birds as pets. They're intelligent creatures, and some species can live for about a century with top quality care. Only better option would be giant tortoises. Also, I've heard about Uzukami. Btw dragons appear to be a main branch of the tree of life in this universe acting as the universal common ancestor when it comes to animals, That's why the Red dragon tasted and had the texture of various different animals, being compared to the taste of living armor. Nightmares appear like clams but aren't actually mollusks the shell you see are its highly derived wings or what could have become wings, this means mollusk and clams in general, stem from that evolutionary branch of dragons into their own thing. This ultimatly means there are invertebrate/non-chordate dragons that exist in this world, those would certainly look more alien than dragon despite sharing a more common lineage than even other similar animals that ultimate derived from them or co-evolved the same traits.
