Earlier today, I wanted to get a feel from my subscribers about which video they would like to see next on my channel. Judging by the results of my poll, there wasn't much of a debate!
The Nordhavn 80 is a sleek, smooth and modern Nordhavn that has been created to bridge the gap between the Nordhavn 76 and the Nordhavn 86 and 96.
The Nordhavn 80 has been designed to be handled by the owners and a captain or the owners and a single crew member.
Being 80ft in length overall, the N80 is probably just a bit too big to be single-crewed for any considerable length of time.
The Nordhavn 80 has four staterooms and a dedicated area for up to two crew members. She also has an abundance of large entertainment areas, both inside and out.
In fact, Nordhavn has described the 80 as their Petite Superyacht.

When there were only artists' drawings I saw a cabin on the flybridge as an option. Now that hull #1 is in the water that has been removed. Why I thought it was a great idea. The penthouse.

While I love the Nordhavns I always think back to an experience I once had at a dock in Vancouver BC. Like you, I have had a lifetime love affair with boating so have always enjoyed walking the docks and looking at all sized vessels. On one such occasion I came across the first older Feadship I had ever seen up close. She was about 100' steel hull with a classic canoe stern. As it happened the skipper was onboard and I managed to catch his attention for a few minutes to talk about this magnificent vessel. The one thing I remember most was when I asked him what he thought of her, he answered that she was a great sea vessel, albeit a little on the slow side. He told me that she did about 10 knots running fast but averaged about 7.5 to 8 knots on long cruises. He noted that most of the owners friends had vessels which cruised between 10-12 knots and they always got to the next port long before his vessel did. This has always stuck with me. When you think of it, if you were going from Vancouver to Hawaii (approx 2200nm) at 8 knots it would take you 275 hours or 11.5 days, at 10 knots you'd take 220 hours or 9 days, and at 12 knots 183 hours or 7.5 days, hence 4 whole days less at sea than your slower buddies! In good conditions no problem right? But if it gets snotty then those extra days getting tossed around out there do take their toll! Because of this, when looking at long range offshore vessels in this length class I would probably lean towards either a semi displacement type yacht like the new Fleming 85 or the new planing Grand Banks 85 which brags a range of 1000nm @ 20kts and 3000 @ 10kts! With speeds and range like that a vessel could easily pick it's weather and out run most pending storms. Here in Vancouver many yachters like to cruise to Desolation sound for a weekend, approx 120nm, at 8 knots the Nordhavn would take 15 hours to get there, at 12 knots/10 hours and if you had a planing hull like the GB85 you'd be there in 6 hours@ 20 knots, a full 9 hours faster than your full displacement friends! While "getting there" is certainly part of the fun, getting there faster can mean that you can have that much more fun at anchor! Just my 2bits...

I like that Nordhavn and Fleming really goes after that owner operator market, but I think anything over 75ft (22 M) is kind of silly to do on your own. Once you get into the 80 ft space though and above, you aren't a casual cruiser anymore and are probably looking to go into more adventurous areas. A captain and deckhand or stewardess/steward would be reasonable. If you wanted to captain the boat yourself and used your traveling companions as deckhands could also work, but you are talking about millionaires. They probably have housekeepers that clean and cook for them. Or if they live on the boat, a yacht management company. So then maybe a stewardess and chef which both could act as deckhands when needed. Certainly 2 crew minimum and maybe a third. Although I love Nordhavn, I think for the money a Sirena 88 or even the 68 would offer just as much capability and definitely more space. Plus 2 hot tubs on the 88. They are about the same price. Having only 3 staterooms on an 80ft yacht seems a bit...lonely.

I knew something about the N76 and N90. I thought there was some talk about an N120. This N80 (over 25m) seems to have a market of its own. There are some who want such a ship for liveaboard. Others may just be boat setting when they aren't in a jet. So if you are called to skipper such a boat, how would you expect an owner to use such a boat/ship?

I do believe the N80 would be a perfect size, simply breathtaking. Recently saw a walkthrough of the Bering 77 which was also spectacular. I love expedition full displacement yachts. But over the past 2 years I’ve been looking at some 54,60, and 70 power cats. Obviously not expedition yachts but with beams of 25-28 feet makes for a very stable yacht especially at anchor. Nordhavn80 has a beam of I think you showed 22-23 feet. I just feel wider beam yachts may bring more comfort. Thoughts???
@YachtBuoy
@YachtBuoy 3 жыл бұрын
I think with stabiliser technology the way it is now, most of the sudden jolting is softened whilst at sea. I must admit, I have never been on a power cat in heavy seas but, from what I have seen, they are incredibly stable. Zero speed stabilisers should also keep you steady whilst at anchor too. Good luck with your potential purchase and let me know how you get on :-)

Have a CApe Horn 75. We operate a boat like this with three Crew so I can relax (we have a 70 ft sailboat that I skipper). Therefore need accommodation for three plus crew, and prefer to have 3/4 cabins for family - these do not have to be big. Like the look of this boat.
