Built as a private yacht for a millionaire businessman in 1930, the WILLIAMSBURG served as a gun boat in WWII and then as the Presidential Yacht for Harry Truman. Today the USS WILLIAMSBURG lies on the shores of La Spezia, Italy, and represents one of most exciting restoration projects on earth today. If you are interested in restoring this magnificent piece of American history contact me at any time. david.seal@northropandjohnson.com

This breaks my heart. My father served on The USS Williamsburgh under Truman. He didn't share much but watching the story, I envisioned him walking the decks. We have a bookmark from Christmas from the Truman's to the crew. One story he told was Bess slipped and was heading into the Potomac and my Pops stopped her. How can I help?

First off, I must compliment you for the EXCELLENT video production work.. WOW!! But.. as for the boat, it is a DISASTER! It is in need of a total rebuild which would ultimately cost tens of millions of dollars for the restoration. I understand that it is an important piece of history. But in the end, it would technically be a replica because the only thing original would be the hull.

Look up the restoration of the Tally Ho, a historical British racing gaff cutter from 1910. The whole ship is being replaced, piece by piece. The soul of the ship remains despite the original physical parts being removed. It's similar to human transplants; even if the whole body is replaced, is it really a different person?

@Kuuryo So if that's a replica, then what happened to Tally Ho? Where did the ship go? I don't think there's a difference between rebuilding a boat around itself piece by piece and restoring a boat one broken part at a time.

This yacht fate has been sealed...Despite abundant rust, which allowed water to enter her hull at times, the yacht remained structurally sound for some time. Navalmare kept Williamsburg afloat, too, pumping out the water to respect her storied past as much as her hopeful future. Unfortunately, though, last spring Williamsburg suffered a devastating blow. She sank, with her bow settling on the sea bottom. The majority of the superstructure remained above water. However, the overall damage was too severe. This led to the Port of La Spezia reaching its conclusion. It's been scraped

@@scdevon not quite... stript it down. take engines out. put it underwater. electrolyse the rust and dirt off, electrolyse new lead onto it (all over it), spraypaint, fit engines back and new walls and floors and all other non-metal components, done. a steel frame or hull is just that. as long as it's still more or less there, you can make it thinner or thicker by simply applying electricity to it. as it was some american boat... yeah.. indeed. it would need complete rebuild by some people that actually knew what they were doing. lol. :P us ships and airplanes and cars do somewhat have a tendency to fall apart anyway.

Hundreds of millions have been sunk into the SS United States in preservation efforts over the years. 100% of that money simply went to pay mooring and storage fees for the rusted hulk. Before it was originally sold for scrap it was COMPLETELY stripped bare to the bulkheads. Nothing of the original interior remains. Jerry Lenfest, Philadelphia area philanthopist, sunk millions into the effort - all of it simply paid storage and dockage fees.

The only way someone would purchase The USS Williamsburg, is if they could restore it as a fully functional seaworthy yacht. The steel will have to be the same quality as the original. It must have full Presidential amenities and memorabilia with touches of her wartime amenities along with the luxury of the original owner. You are talking about a floating time machine into the pass. Everything has to be original including the communication, radar and sonar equipment. Even the glass portholes and windows have to be original. The engines must be vintage and exempt from EPA emissions standards. The there is the question of the furniture of the original owner, the US Navy and The White House. I estimate the full and complete restoration to cost one and a half billion dollars at least. A true HISTORY BUFF with unlimited funds, time and resources would be the perfect candidate for such a noble undertaking. What is the sale price for the USS Williamsburg?
@Yachtsforsaleblog
@Yachtsforsaleblog 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Vartalak, thanks for your comment. If the yacht were to be restored to her truly original condition then she would have to be taken back to her days as the "Aras" - a true luxury yacht with a gleaming black hull and a sumptuous interior. Records indicate that the "Williamsburg" actually had a very spartan interior, Truman's staff indicate that they picked furniture up here and there, and photo archives bare this out. If a history buff wanted to restore her to her original condition as a Presidential yacht then it would be a fascinating project, the internet is full of Williamsburg memorabilia for sale. The price for a refit is estimated at USD 55.5m . This would be a restoration that is sympathetic to the styling of a classic yacht but not true to the original layout or furnishing. Navalmare, who own the vessel and offer to perform the restoration work, have built the steel and aluminium work for two VSY Superyachts in recent years, so as a reference a buyer could expect the yacht to be finished to Italian superyacht standards - which are high.

Aaron L Thanks for your comment, and I have to agree with you. The shipyard that own the yacht changed ownership shortly before I made this video, and the new owners have a far more constructive approach to the problem. Their main business is to build oil platforms, so they are happy to almost give the yacht away so that they can focus on that. I know this comment is far too late as the boat has sunk and been scrapped long ago, however, such is the work required that you have to question if it's too far gone. That the shipyard didn't have the faith to lift the boat out the water says enough. Every part of the boat was junk. However, it did have the hallmarks of a project that a public body would take on to restore and preserve as a museum ship. Never really sailing again, but preserved for its part in history. Even then, however, so little of the original was left. No interiors, nothing. Even for them the task was too much, with so little history to preserve in return. Sadly we have so few artifacts from WWII to educate the next and next generations beyond. The last of our brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen, of WWII are nearly gone. All we'll have is these relics to try and get an impression of what war really was like; the blood of conflict long washed away. And what's worse is that we seem to have more of the Nazi war machine preserved that the Allies. If you're in London then I encourage you to visit both HMS Belfast and the Cabinet War Rooms where Churchill also has a museum. Those two should be high on your list, with the Imperial War Museum there too. But don't just go alone, take your children and teach them how hate and division cost so many lives!

So sad to read that she sank in 2015 and was scrapped. The owners weren't able to raise the money to save her. -jcr

I am wondering why was Churhill on there talking about how the world to be, Churchill was not a leader when H. Trueman was president of the USA, Churchill had lost the General Election in 1945 to Labour Atlee in that year before the war had ended, by rights Churchill should of never been PM during the war, He became PM by default when Liberals leader resigned in 1939, and the Job was handed to Churchill leader of the Tory party with out a General Election, Was this one of those secret Bildenberg Meetings, that took place on that boat, we know Churchill was deeply involved in the Bilderberg Meetings, he was present at the first one in 1945 and he was also present at the 1954 Bildenberg steering committee meeting

How did it end up in Italy, may be it was sold to a private personal but how? It was a presidential ship. These Americans are crazy fellas.. Should have respected its history rather disowning.

If i could afford it i would save all the classic and historical Yachts and Ships as i yjinj they are all. Some od the prettiest structures ever built by man the Williamsburg is awesome although my most favorite superstructure is the U.S.S United States thet is floating on the Delaware River Around Philadelphia Pennsylvania In limbo as to what the owners are going to do with her

I saw some recent pictures of her on navsource.org, and she can't be saved. I wish she was, but the pic I saw of her, which was her resting on the harbor bottom, shows saving is no longer possible.

from what i could find it weighed ruffly 2021.6 ton, in the U.S.A. steel is around $50.00 a ton that equals ruffly $101,080.00 U.S. dollars i bet if someone would have offered them 100,000 U.S they probably would have taken it.

The biggest question that hasn't been addressed is her heart and soul meaning what's the status of the legendary Winton diesels If they are still complete and can be overhauled and all components can be brought back to former glory she has hope. If not then sadly a lot of her glorious splendor is lost. It's all or nothing. Winton diesels are as it is anyway and if they can be saved then there's still a chance for her whether it be private owner or historical society like old Tacoma Marine.

+Brendan M The Winton diesels were really remarkable - they weigh about 100 tons each and would be really tough to get working again unfortunately. Thanks for watching and commenting though!

+Brendan M She's fallen to the bottom in 2015, it's condemned if not scrapped. "Today her decks are awash in La Spezia. She has sunk at her mooring." Like all important history it is one of the things we just don't give a fuck about.

"Replace the superstructure" "Replace interior" "Replace engines" Why not just build a boat for the same price it will cost to do all this... Sure it is "Historical" but only a billionaire or a rich fool will spend money on a ship that in essence must be REBUILT to be okay again.... I say clean her up, Patch the holes, add some floors, add some furniture, paint her up and have her as a floating home or something...
