Hi David. Stabilisation on any yacht will "reduce" pitch and roll. Older displacement yachts have a heavy keel. Always look forward to your factory tours and "how to buy" series. Another great video thanks 😊

Producer Michael's next yacht purchase is apparently being advised by a few different people including a couple who are both captains and advocates for the "live-aboard lifestyle" as they do with their own boat in Marina Del Rey; the "Nauti Styles" KZbin channel. Rico (the husband; a yacht manager, and Brig tender dealer) might have oversold the stability of a seakeeper gyro when they had Producer Michael on a Prestige 630 for a look around some weeks ago. Maybe next up to show Producer Michael should be that (iirc) 93ft Viking they toured once that had both hydraulic fins and a gyro? Because maths tells me two stabilization systems should be twice as stable... that's how that works, right?

Two fun facts with the BlackBerry: 1) I am still using one. 2) The founder of BlackBerry recently took delivery of his yacht "Artefact" which has a bit of an unusual design. But back to the main topic: While most people think of stabilizers for motor yachts there are also retractable fin stabilizers for sailing yachts since 2014 (and no I am not talking about flopper stoppers here :-D). Though information on the retractable fin stabilizers (DMS AntiRoll) and how well they actually work is hard to find.

Love the anecdote about how you got your Rolex. Your channel is a great insight no just into yachts, but the whole world around it. But the roll is one of the reasons why even if I had the money I’d have issues getting a yacht. My wife gets sooo sea sick, I’m not even sure zero speed stabilisers would prevent it. Though I suppose could get some, but have them off, when ever the wife was on board. Then I would get to enjoy it to myself 😂
@delcassie13373 жыл бұрын
Martigan Uk, you should look at a yacht called "Silver Cloud" she is a Swath yacht that the owner had built because his wife got sea sick. They have travelled the world and she has not been sea sick once. Swath yachts are becoming more popular because of there stability in high seas. Swath boats started as pilot boats and crew transfer boats in the North Sea.

You can actually test and feel the gyro effect if you have a bicycle wheel; hold the wheel by the axle on both sides and up in front of you and try to turn it perpendicular to the wheels direction which is easy obviously, but now have somebody spin the wheel fast while you hold it up and now try and turn it the same way you did before and you will feel that there is now a small but noticeable resistance to you effort to change the wheels position and that's how gyro stabilizers work:-)

Yes, I like this style of video. I am glad you did not edit out the young lady coming onto frame. That was funny. Back to stabilizers. I don't know what people expect on a yacht at sea. It is a yacht at sea after all. It will never be the same as having a cocktail in your back porch. The rocking and rolling is part of the enjoyment. Dammit I paid for the boat feel!! I am always amused when brokers walk into a master and exclaim that people will think they are at home. I don't want to feel like I am at home. I want to feel like I am on a yacht! Another great video David.

Loved the story on how your watch about. As for Producer Michael, I've watched most of his videos, and he was told on one of the yacht videos that he did, which he has done videos on two different yachts, that the gyro stabilizer would hold the yacht completely still from rolling, and I wanted to tell him that they do eliminate a lot of the rolling, but they will not completely eliminate it. lol. You should send him a video on something like a nice used RIVA 88 Folgore, something very sporty with lots of carbon fiber. I enjoy the ones that tried selling him that yacht, but I knew right away that it wasn't his "taste". lol. He's a Ferrari type of guy,. So it would take a Ferrari type of yacht to catch his attention. He has also been talking about buying a home in Florida. :))

If you caught the aside in his superyacht chat, you will hear he had a Cigarette racing boat and he DIDN'T get seasick in that, only on the slower cruiser. What happened to his Cigarette? Somehow he managed to sink it. No details were given.
@grondhero3 жыл бұрын
@@darthkek1953 A general stereotype response would be that the rich guy raced it, lost control and either it hit something or he flipped it. I've seen several KZbin videos of people doing that with brand new sports cars and I'd imagine the mentality is the same for a cigarette boat. Granted, that's a blanket statement, but that'd be my initial guess without more information.

There is very little point having fin stabilizers on a planing hull unless you plan to cover significant distances at displacement speeds in it. Gyro stabilizers though can make all the difference at anchor to a pleasant day especially in busy anchorages where other craft are moving through. Nice story about the watch David.

Here’s a thought that ties in both stories for you. Is that model of Rolex a self winding model? One that winds itself up by a swinging weight? What if you could scale it up and use the pitch n roll of a boat to spin up a fly wheel to power generators. A Self-sufficient electric boat. Maybe not enough power for a planing vessel, but a displacement hull? I believe Devon University are working on it.

Great video and a great story David. On the subject of stabilizer's, there are many different types out there. Fixed, quantum zero speed, folding and the latest although not that new is the spinning stabilizer. Folding stabilizer's that fold back into the hull have been around for many years on commercial ships and indeed cruise ships and have a place on explorer yachts that intend to visit the polar regions where there is a lot of ice.. Any chance that you could do a video dedicated to the various types and there uses?. And of course there suitability to what type of yacht. Thanks again David for a great production and nice to see your team "Photo Bombing" lol

As you discuss stabilizing in this very informative video, I had a fairly unrelated question popping up in my brain. As I assume that American yachts are build using imperial measurements, as well as their American appliances, engines etc. how inconvenient is it to make alterations in the Mediterranean/ Europe. I mean the stuff needs different voltage, has weird dimensions and so on. On one side they do build some very nice yachts with a very practical interior design, on the other hand when all upgrades and services are more complicated i.e. expensive, their yachts are not really that interesting for the European market?

If I understand correctly, the primary function of a stabilizer is to dampen rolling from side to side and pitching up and down. It does not have any way to stop a yacht from pitching up and down as it makes way along the ocean. I mean, no matter how sophisticated the suspension on a car is, the car is still going to have to ride up and down on a hilly road. A boat is supported by the water. It has to go with the flow.

You vlog is constantly improving. This one was a really great one, very informative and also interesting with that little personal gimmick you put in (the Rolex). Great job! From my own experience with sales it has become clear that potential customers react positively when the sales representative opens up a bit about his or her personal life, adds a personal touch to it. Some of course would say that is somewhat unprofessional, and they'll be right if it is too much or too private yet hit that fine balance like you did here and you'll are bound to succeed.
