Yaesu FT-100 or the Xeigu G90? Both are HF radios that are widely used by hams. Both good rigs, but which one do the Ask An Elmer panel recommend?

The ft-100 is a 100w radio when ran on 13.8v, on 12v its just a 20w radio, hence the G90 reference

FT -100 does actually have a band scope - you can set it up under option 15 under functions.

I still have the FT-100. I'm in a situation where it's either/or and can't afford to have both. The FT-100's resale is about $450 so if I did want to switch I could do it with no money out of pocket. I have it paired-up with an ATU-100 and a WRC mini with 102" whip. The receive is awesome and even though I run it at about 20W if I get a weak signal report the ability to turn it up to 11 has actually been pretty useful. I'm disabled and don't do any hiking so weight isn't a huge issue for me. I have a tablet with an SDR to scan the bands and is visually easier for me to use. Sounds like my first video on this channel will be a rig rundown of my setup! (when it stops raining, Oregon weather for the win!).

The FT-100D is notorious for the VHF finals (final amplifier, what makes the output power) going out. If you used this radio on VHF, I HIGHLY suggest running it at no more than 10% power on VHF. BTW the finals, if you can find them, are SEVERAL hundreds of dollars.

There is an easy mod for this that keeps the fans running at a slow speed to remedy that issue.

To try the new Yeasu 101d/ftdx10 use a mouse and with the Touch interface menu is amazing. Yes you will need to know the words but much better then older radios so doesn’t apply to the touch screen radios. KC3ONO

If you're Yaesu keep dying then you're killing them because I've had 10 different Yaesu radios and not a damn one of them has died, additionally, if you have RF back in the audio of the FT100, you had other issues....how do I know? I have 5 FT100s and have never had that problem....Jeff - W5JGW...

Yes, love the FT-100 and wish I had at least one more. Have 5 Icom 706's. I think 3 of them are MKIIG's. The others just plain old MKII's. Anyone wanting to sell a Yaesu FT-100 let me know...

@Joe Bruno the 706 MkIIG is the only Icom I would ever allow in this Shack, period. that is one great radio from icom, and was the competitor to Yaesu FT-100D.

@@joebruno8785 looking St 1 on the English Ebob Auction site now, their is a ft-100 & an ft-100d with crystal & larger speaker as upgrades on the 100, is the 100d the cheaper but better buy for myself, or should u go for the 100d, cheers Ed Mcr Uk 👋

20 vs 100w is not that mutch for the Rx station (half to one S) The G90 is packed with goodies that an "old limping" Ft-100 lack. Realy comparing apples and pears guys .-)

Don't buy an ft-100! Current consumption is too high, need to add filters, over heating issues. G90 is a superior radio.

People carry on about the G90's features, and only care about the here and now, but forget to mention that the chinese counterfeit components off of a 1c production line with components that have doubtful values and tolerances that are not up to spec according to what the data sheets tell says "you get what you pay for." And when your cheap ass leaky Electrolytic turns into a resistor and eventually shorts and destroys your semiconductors, good luck. Nice fun toy though. I like the flashy lights on it. For what the G90 costs though, it's worth saving a bit more $ and buy Elecraft and support USA tech and don't be a sell out.

Xiegu G90! Why no Yaesu FT100? Finals on 2m are many dead in the Years and many other Problems. No SDR....73, DO1xxx

FT100 is first generation of shack-in-box. AVOID unless silly cheap, and still avoid.

The "D" model wasent far out.. But we live in 2021 now :-) Who wold repair the crashdown of a Ft-100??
