This has been a "feature" for a long time and does have logic to it. If you are operating wide split or using a sub receiver on another band for example. (I appreciate that not all radios have the sub).It makes more sense to bypass the tuner on receive in these examples.

I have the ftDx10, but the tuner components are likely the same for the 710. It’s a more capable tuner than advertised (doing better than 3:1 in many instances-exact matching capabilities are too complex to capture by a single vSWR ratio metric). That being said, it’s still not tuning antennas that are so far out that it would make much difference on receive-because the radio is so sensitive; you often need to attenuate and roll the RF gain back, rather than boost it. With respect to filtering out of band signals (which is different from band noise), not all tune configurations are the same on that front. Additional filtering (like band pass filtering) is most useful to avoid receiver overload, but the Yaesu radios aren’t very susceptible to that, and have adequate filtering of that nature.

First time I see someone want to tune an antenna for receiving.

Everytine I see an open soda can or ANY drink on a radio bench, I cringe! Lost count of the laptop system boards I have had to replace. G4BTi, retired IT engineer.

Can you use external tuner to dial in RX?

Yaesu has gone cheap. Thats why I wont buy them now.

Can this really be true? de oh6kxl

I have to add here. I've been using different transceivers since 1993 and have always been using external tuners. Some have been automatic and others (like now) manual. I start tuning (with new unknown antenna/band) by looking for good inductance and capacitance values by turning knobs/handles. I can also switch more capacitance and/or enable low pass/high pass mode. My ears tell when the noise is LOUD, tuner is near the optimal point. And then, I push PTT, TX or whatever to transmit with low power. Then I carefully start process again by turning knobs etc. Always my tuners have been working also in rx, of course (externals). Tuning/coupling tx to feed line with tuner does not "block noise" as you said. It just makes signal/noise ratio better. So you will hear what you need. But finally, I repeat my question. Is it really possible Yaesus tuner will not work on rx? Is there a possibility to some kind of misunderstanding? 73! OH6KXL
