Agree with the ratio. The raw dollar amount doesn't matter as the GDP of the US in the last 100 just like that graph too. The key is to keep the debt to GDP ratio in a reasonable range.

Unless the GDP number is comprised largely of government spending into the private market and therefore the debt and GDP can grow in unison artificially and meanwhile this is simply hiding the impoverishment of anyone who is not on that teat.
