I met and had an in-depth conversation with Jay at an event. People would come up and try to interrupt the conversation and he would say I am talking right now and the people would walk off. Super nice, non pretentious and very intelligent on the subject of automobiles. I am not a fan of many people but Jay will always have my respect.

Nothing but respect for Jay. I was lucky enough to visit his garage through a friend of a friend and first thing I saw walking in was Jay leaned over into the engine bay of a pre-war Bentley. He stood up and turn around and I was star struck. Immediately he said hello, shook my hand, offered me a soda, and told me to make myself at home. He is the real deal.

Good lord, how does everyone get a visit to Jay's garage but me :). Wonderful interview as always, I could watch Jay talk about cars for hours (and have!). As far as the Tesla car and others, there has been many videos out there that have shown the lithium battery in a garage or even out as people driving have been know to catch on fire or explode in a garage which leaves a lot of damage.. just saying... Plus what I have read Lithium is mined from the china using child labor. Then there are those in the US behind the curtain that invest for profit billions to be made at the expense of young kid slaves. My Dad grew up during the depression, the oldest of eight kids in the family. He and all his brothers were good mechanics. My dad could figure out and fix anything mechanical, he could work with concrete, and he could and did build houses. That is what the depression did for many people in those days. His granddaughter took an office job in the old Stutz building in Indianapolis, IN. He asked for a tour since he had not been in the building in many years, but he had been there as a young man. The owner agreed and gave dad a tour. Then my Dad started telling the owner different things about the factory that he remembered. So, in the end it was the new owner who got the history tour.

Parents or good mentors always make a new person (apprentice learning) clean and disassemble if needed, carefully! Carefully clean anything and rebuild it easier, and this actually makes a habit to feel knowing products, everything (almost) if it's made u some people I a factory you're mind set realizes the patience to research the item and then... Jay hit on something really important that most manufacturers have forgotten or ignored and it is killing the personal transportation industry. Find ways to make things cost less and make them affordable to sell a ton of them. The pursuit of luxury is making most things too expensive.

Hyundai had a good formula for making affordable cars 20 years ago. Keep it simple, build it right. I sold them back in those years; you could get a very nice Elantra for $12K. Today, with all the electronics even an Accent can cost $20K after dealer markup. So they will no longer make it for '23. The Elantra now costs as much as a Civic, $22-30K. But watch that your engine does not catch fire and incinerate the car. Around Northern Westchester, most new vehicles are huge pickup trucks or Jeeps, cost be damned, $100 fill up no problem. EVs start at $55K, get on the waiting list. But keep in mind the Li-ion battery technology will soon be obsolete.

@@mossmiller The Chevrolet Bolt EV is $26,600, the Nissan Leaf is $27,000. There's no cleaner or more efficient way of propelling a car then renewable electricity → battery → motor, and most of the hyped replacements for lithium-ion batteries, none of which are being manufactured in enough volume to make automotive EV packs, are variations on lithium battery chemistry.

@Jo Mma every recent study concludes an EV powered by the current grid mix is better for the environment than a gasser over the life of a car. Go read the ICCT study and the one from researchers at the University of Exeter, Cambridge, and Nijmeggen. The only argument is whether the EV repays the environmental cost of its heavy recyclable battery after 7,500, 15,000, or 30 000 miles. It's intuitively obvious when you realize a 35 mpg gasser burns through 10 tons of fossil fuel over 120,000 miles. Since the majority of new generation is wind and solar, because they're cheap and quick, every EV on the road will only get cleaner in the future.

Elon does not say the world will end tomorrow if we do not end fossil fuel. In fact, he said we probably should keep pumping oil. Because human suffering does not offset climate change (formerly known as global warming). But as a human species, we need to strive for better and transition to better forms of energy, a sustainable energy future. Imagine today still being on horse power or steam engines. How ridiculous is that? Elon prefers nuclear energy.

It seems to be the carbon footprint that people are always worried about. The carbon footprint of the electric car is maybe 10% less. Then, factor in how current battery technology means the batteries are going to puke around 10 years of age, and thus they won't even make it to the average age of a car on US highways right now. If the battery technology improves in respect to longevity, then we will have something to go on.

@@paulstandaert5709 Battery tech these days is lasting quite a bit longer with manufacturers knowing they need to active thermal management, the charge curves used, improved chemistries and providing enough of a buffer so they aren't fully discharged or charged for certain chemistries. They last about 300k km these days with almost 90% of their capacity still intact, of course abusing the battery will reduce that range. The older non thermally managed Ni-Cd EV batteries would be kaput in around 200k km at the most, and would cost half the car's value to replace.
