@Solitude Zero I'm Japanese and I bought the digital copy of Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 in the PS store and I randomly encountered this side mission well I didn't have a hard time in it because I am better at english than most people in Japan (not trying to boast) but english is not a primary language in Japan and most Japanese people have a hard time understanding it unless you study alot

In the Yakuza games (or at least in 0, I'm only midway through Kiwami rn), when a character speaks a language outside of Japanese, the subtitles usually indicate it somehow. There are a few characters in 0 who speak Chinese, and their subtitles are in brackets as a result. Also Y0 was released after Y3 so this could also just be chalked up to changes in canon.

Not to ruin the joke, but there's likely a reason the English text is so wide. Japanese text consists of perfectly square characters, all the same size. In the early days where games need to implement text rendering themselves, developers could take a shortcut by not storing the width of characters or doing any fancy logic like dynamic spacing based on character width, wrapping text only where there's a space (which isn't done in Japanese) etc, instead focussing on the challenge of storing/displaying the thousands of different possible characters in each 'grid square'. When English text then _does_ need to be displayed, each English character would be rendered at the same size as Japanese characters, which looks kind of funny (there's other reasons you might want to do this, like keeping alignment between other Japanese text). Not a huge problem though because English would rarely be used. Of course for the localisation that wouldn't fly so the text rendering is re-implemented. But I guess when the translators came across how the foreign English text was displayed in the original, they thought to mimic the 'foreign text' style those square grid characters gave. And so we have this scene xD

Yakuza 5 uses the same engine as Ishin, 0, Kiwami 1 already, Yakuza 4 feels alright but they fucked up Yakuza 3 on PS4 (Kiryu literally walks like on ice when fighting...), I think HD texture enhancement will be enough because these three entries are what makes modern Yakuza games, just like RE4,5,6 to newer RE games
