A old japanese movie called "Onibaba", which got me into more sophisticated movies, back then, when i was about 15years old.

_Sonatine_ ("Shonatine") has the greatest movie trailer of all time. I have to say, though, that my favourite Kitano movie by far is _Hana-Bi._ I really think that's his masterpiece. 'Beat' Takeshi movies all have great soundtracks by the famous Joe Hisashi.

Michael, you might enjoy the nonfiction books _Lost Japan_ and _Dogs & Demons_ by Alex Kerr. They are both enjoyable reads and very interesting for understanding more about Japan culturally.

So one thing to keep in mind about the Yakuza series is that the main plot lines are played completely straight, but the side quests and side activities are usually very silly.

1:50 anyone wanting to get a great image of the dirty and violent world of broken Japan of the immediate postwar years should check out the film _Drunken Angel_ (1948) by, yes, Kurosawa.

Re: Japanese theatre, AFAIK for both of the two main traditional forms, Nōh and Kabuki, all actors for all parts were exclusively played by men.
