Just to add something to the conversation: Masaharu Take, one of the directors for the show worked on a show called "The Naked Director" which sounds like a Yakuza substory and it is easily some of the most Yakuza-esque thing to have happened outside of the Yakuza franchise so this new show will certainly be interesting to see. I expect the show to at least capture the vibe of the series pretty nicely if things go well enough

I also think that the adaptation would take place between the event Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 1 or untold story of what happened in Yakuza 1. Since the JP title of this show is Ryu Ga Gotoku ~ Beyond The Game ~, I definitely think the show would do that if they include Nishiki and Kiryu in this. Oh and the show better have a dynamic intro or OST made by the Sega Sound Team. That the only thing I want 😅

A bit late to this and I’m not sure if it’ll be seen, but I wanted to share some more information: •The announcement about Ryoma, Kento, and Munetaka came from a gossip magazine due to a rumor from people working the filming site. It was said that they were in Roppongi- a district next to the one Kamurocho is based off of- at a nightclub. Munetaka is around a decade older than the other two so I’m not sure who he could be at all. •They do say that they’re going to explore stories not shown in the games, and there’s a focus in some articles about his childhood friends. So, I assume this will mean they show stuff about Nishiki, Yumi, and Yuko (if she’s the third one they’re talking about) we haven’t seen before. •RGG Studio was involved since Day 1. Nagoshi talked about it in 2020 at Tokyo Game Show, saying that he had made it very clear to the producers who approached him that he wanted the studio to have a strong say in everything. He had even said that he didn’t think a live action was necessary, but would only allow it to happen if the script was to his liking. I believe at some point in 2022, they had finished the scripts. •I got that last bit from the Wild Sheep Content site which one of the executive producers, Erik Barmack, is in charge of. It’s also where I learned they started production in early May. But the specific article about production is from another site that’s paywalled for some reason even though a ton of their other articles aren’t. Erik himself had talked about working on the show in some interviews and events, and he always sounded very excited about it.

way back when when live action adaptations were never good i thought to myself "man its so hard to fit a game that can go on for 10s of hours into a 1 or 2 hour movie, why dont they just make them into shows?". I am glad that the industry read my thoughts because ever since we have been getting shows instead of movies they have been so much better, and Yakuza is another example that would be so much better as a show so im pretty excited for this while remaining optimistic. If this show is a big hit we may see another popularity surge like what happened with 0 and 7.

Personally, I hope it accurately catches the wild, scatter-brained vibe of the Games, with a ridiculous superhuman Kiryu, the silliness we see in the Substories but at the same time, the grim, serious vibe of the very first Game as well as in the dialogues. I hope Kiryu and the other major characters will have visible heat auras, that he performs heat actions with the specific SFX sound like in Yakuza 0 and Kiwami, that we see him go play one of the classic Minigames with Haruka and that it is as equally silly as in the games. That quick change of mood between seriousness, ridiculousness, comedy, weirdness and drama is what makes Yakuza so great.

Thanks for bringing this up, I almost forgot they were planning another. Personally I enjoyed the Miike Takashi Like a Dragon film, despite some odd bits feeling a little out of character, it did do a decent job covering the events but also included some honest dumb fun at times and I appreciate that aspect. Stamina x for the win! On the topic of live adaptations as well as being one of the five people (lol) that would love to see Kurohyo in the west, I remember seeing 3 film adaptations of the delinquent based manga series called "Crows Zero" that were pretty fun too, main character was also played by Shun Oguri (Yakuza 6's Someya) and had a surprisingly very similar look to Kurohyo's Tatsuya, hair style included. The Crows Zero films had some very yakuza-esk vibes, decent brawls and some extremely goofy "heat move" like moments here and there, I genuinely would recommend it to Like a dragon fans looking for something kinda resembles Kurohyo.

I am somewhat hyped to see it, but having it exclusive to streaming is tempering my expectations quite a bit. I really hope that it gets a DVD and/or Blu-ray Release at some point. A Digital Release at the very least if you ask me. My main concern is that should licensing expire or fall apart at any point in time, the series will be pulled and effectively Lost Media. That is also a problem with Digital titles too, but at least you can see it that way without having to commit to another subscription service that might not have much else that you like.

The most interesting detail of this announcement to me has to be how the series focuses on Kiryu "and three of his childhood friends". Two of them are most certainly Nishiki and Yumi, but there hasn't been a third friendly figure in Kiryu's childhood in the games. I'm guessing the best candidates are either Nishiki's sister or Reina, but I wouldn't be too suprised if they change some backstories to make Majima the third childhood friend.

I really hope this becomes the best entry point to the franchise honestly. Currently, I think Kiwami is the best entrypoint story-wise (the Nishiki cutscenes add important context that Y1 was sorely lacking). But since the gameplay is just Yakuza 0 but worse, I hesitate to suggest Kiwami to new players as it kinda ruins the experience of playing 0 for the first time. Hopefully this will tell the original Y1 story as well as or better than Kiwami. Also, since it's a TV series, it should be much easier to convince someone to watch it, than it is to get them to play an 80 hour game.

There's quite a lot of game adaptations now so I'm just going to stay neutral by not being hyped or negative towards it. I love the Yakuza/LAD franchise but another story around the original Yakuza sounds like more of the same compared to the previous adaptations. If it was a unique story then I'd be personally excited for that. So yeah, cool that we are getting more Yakuza/LAD but I really wish it was something different than the original story.

i think yokoyama meant like this is an objective way to experience the story, not the definitive version like in game every person plays the game differently, but with the show we are all gonna experience the same thing, no side tracking to go sing karaoke or play bowling (unless it actually happens in the show lmao)

Im just hoping that Majima is portrayed correctly (pretty sure Kiryu will be with that actor) and it'll be enjoyable enough. I do hope this gets more people into the games though, like Fallout did recently (so many people on my Steam friends playing NV, 4 or even 76 lol)

I will say this, worst case scenario we'll probably still have a good Kiryu. Kamen Rider Drive makes me optimistic about Ryoma, guess we'll have to wait and see
