To prevent mold and smells in your front loader just leave the door ajar when it's not in use. I'm in the UK and that's what I've always done and never had any issues. It also helps the door seal last longer as it's not then in a permanently stretched state.

Thank you. The internet seems to think top load are way better but there’s no way a front load isn’t THE type to have. I’ve never once had an issue with cleaning (the ACTUAL REASON you buy a washer) with front load. HE top load are garbage. I have to constantly fool the machine into actually putting enough water in to clean anything properly. Some garments just sit on top of the others and barely get agitated. Front load clearly washes everything and the AIR pushing through the garment is what cleans it, not just swishing it around in a tub.

LG front loaders are awesome! Our front load LG dryer still going strong at year 14 while the washer did go out after 9 years we replaced it with the same LG washer. We always leave the door open after each use along with the soap dispenser and have never had milder or smell issues. We also run the tub clean feature once a month with bleach. Front loaders clean better with much less water much less electricity and can handle much larger loads. It's a no brainer!

My ElectroLux of two years ago takes two hours, yes I said 119 minutes to wash one load of clothes. Forty eight minutes just to run the self clean cycle! As I kept my old dryer I know that the clothes coming out of the washer are no dryer than the old top loader that took twenty minutes to wash (both machines are set on their deep clean settings). Both take the exact same 60-70 minutes to dry. Other than the ability to do blankets and sleeping bags there is not much advantage to the front loader filled with expensive electronic mother boards that get bathed in humidity so they can fail early. My old Kenmore top loader lasted thirty three years with two service calls one free on warranty and the other thirty dollars. You can bet this new machine is not going to last anywhere near a small portion of those years. The front glass gets soap residue on it rapidly so they recommend special more expensive soap for additional cost in laundry!! I still can not believe that the damn thing makes a laundry cycle now last three hours instead of the old hour and a half!!! It is also no quieter by any discernible measure. Engineered to fail as well as not do the job it is sold for. Very sad state of affairs as machines pile up in the junk yards for no good reason.

My wife won’t even consider a front load washer, she’s heard stories from her friends bout the mold issues and I can’t talk her into one. I tell her that GE has the Microban coated surface to eliminate the problem and even using less water and drying time being better doesn’t change her mind. Our next set will be a high efficiency top load and it’s probably going to be soon. I finally talked her into a new Profile dishwasher which has the coated surfaces to eliminate the mold. I’m going to keep working on her to accept a front load. Thanks for continuing to make these videos, I think you’re doing a great service for us who watch.

If there is a mold problem, then saying you are putting a coating on the washer or adding complexity that might work but will surely break sounds more like marketing baloney than a real solution to the problem, which is periodic cleaning to eliminate any accumulated mold. If you are getting a HE top loader don't get a Samsung, we discovered they are really household flooding devices in disguise!

Machine Clean cycle every 30 days, mine instructs to use a cup of bleach on the clean cycle and keep the door open.. I also dry the inside of the door gasket/boot and wipe my front glass...Never had an issue with odor or mold. I have had one in a garage and one inside. I live in very humid conditions on the gulf coast of the USA.

A tip for front load for smell, excess soap build up and cloudy glass door, I put white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser instead of fabric softener, it softens clothes and keep soap build up and smell away

I will pick front load washers any time. I have a Siemens front load bought in 2012 and its still going great. No jet engine noises, no mold and didn't even needed to call for service as even they says if u take good care, you wont be needing much of a service unless something happens to the drum.

I had a top loader for 10 years before it died. Then got a front loader and loved how clean my husbands work clothes got and how much gentler it was. I never had mold issues and it was still in perfect working order when I sold them with the house after 8 years. The top loader in my rental with the agitator is terrible. Very harsh on my clothes and nothing comes out cleaner because of it. I used my moms top loader he washer without the agitator when I visited and again clothes not coming out as clean. I’m going with a front loader for my new house.

Recently I cam across a top load Whirlpool washer. However this one features a detachable agitator. It was an interesting development. Over time we’ll see how it holds up. The appeal would be the ability to remove the agitator when washing something bulky.

I have an Inglis ITW4671EW0. It's an HE top-load made by Whirlpool with an impeller instead of an agitator. I've never had a problem and it has always worked just fine and cleans my clothes without ruining them. If I had a bad back, maybe then I'd spring for a front-loader but not until then. The extra cost isn't worth it to me and they get musty very easily.

I have a top load impeller style LG washer for a long time and it's been great at cleaning clothes. Only problem with it is from the bleach dispenser rusting, had to disconnect it, clean the rust and apply Rustoleum paint.

8:35 That’s a good point-to empty our front load washer, and make sure I don’t miss a sock or washcloth to turn into a rancid mold ball, I basically have to kneel down on the floor and climb halfway in. It’s a little less fun with each passing year. But, for the advantages of -load size -operating efficiencies -almost impossibility of off-balance (the dreaded thump-THUMP-SLAM) -especially how well the spin cycle works (some of our fleece blankets, light sweatshirts and even summer weight sheets come out almost dry) I prefer front load. I inspect homes and test washer/dryers everyday. I notice front loader gaskets leaking, bad smells/mold and control boards not working. I rarely see issues with top loads unless they are more than 10 years old.

Gaskets needs to be dried or standing water will be moldy. Dry the gasket and leave the door open for a quick fix

I had a Blomberg front load machine for 7 years and it did fine. Nothing special or extraordinary cleaning wise. It simply did the job that a washer is supposed to do. Not sure why there is so much hype over front loads. I now went for the top load no agitator washer for half the price of a front load, and again it does a wonderful job which is to simply clean clothes lol! Nothing more and nothing less which is expected of any washer. In my opinion it is a personal choice which machine you go for and whatever fits your budget. It’s not a one size fits all! To each their own. Happy washing machine hunting :)

I have a Maytag hybrid washer and I think it washes just fine. As a matter of fact it washes better than the old Kenmore with the agitators that I got rid of. The new washer doesn't use much water. And this is the key to getting hybrid to wash well. The more water in the tub the less time the cloth and the impeller in the hybrid spend in contact with the cloths. Really the only time you need a full tub is when your washing comforters or jeans 👖 With the hybrids you have to change your washing technique just a little.

Can these machines be hooked up to just a single cold water supply and heat water to 145 degrees plus? I believe most American machines have cold and hot supply inlets 1. the unit will only have cold water going to it and so which machine would do the best at heating cold water to 140 degrees plus ? 2. most reliable and long lasting ? 3. Not sure if a direct drive or a belt drive machine is better and which each of the above machines have ? Thank you again

We bought one of the first US produced front load washers in 1998. We managed to make the machine limp along all the way into this year and are finally replacing it with another front load set. One thing for certain is the newer machines will not last as long as the original machines we are replacing. Just to note, I probably replaced the shocks in the 1998 machine over half a dozen times, the tension springs once, door latch twice, and the drum to drain flex boot once. I gave up on the shocks when I was buying one bad new replacement after another.

I prefer the hybrid top loader. I currently have a front loader and I honestly hate it. Randomly it has balancing issues and the machine can’t correct it. I have tried everything. Top-loaders use more water and are for heavily-soiled loads that really need a "lot of interaction" between the laundry and the water/detergent. Front-loaders are instead for lightly-soiled loads (with maybe a few/occasional stubborn stains), use less water, and are _not so "heavy-duty"._ But also -- not everyone's laundry necessarily comes in dripping with dirt and grime either!! So it's no surprise that front-loaders can certainly be the more "economical" and even practical choice for most folks out there!!

Got a Maytag Maxima front load 8 years ago. Maybe they have improved them but this one has been a headache in throwing off "error codes". And despite the cleaning every month and leaving the door open, it does get moldy around the seals. Not just the large main seal but the one behind it. Dispenser also gets mold around the slides where it pulls out of the machine which also doesn't slide out well. Since this was my first front loader, I am disappointed enough to go back to the top loader.

I’m in the uk so we are used to front loaders, but even here I could say so much about about why people mould and mildew in the front loaders, but it’s pointless because no one ever acts on it, cold washes, detergents, softeners, load size, door opening, wash temperature, bacteria growth. All of which I don’t have a problem with here in the UK and never have had, Top loaders do get mould and mildew between the drum and tub, Lift the drum out a top load washing machine and from the bottom of the tub you will see mould and scale and it makes its way up to the top, watch the videos of people having their top loaders cleaned, the only reason you done know it’s there is because there’s no rubber seal at the top for it to form on, so you immediately think your machine is clean, It’s not I’m afraid and in some cases the mould and mildew and bacteria growth in a top loader is worse than any front loader because you leave it so long because you can’t see it,

I have never had mould problems with my front load mile washing machine. It's over 20 years old. I wripe it out after each use and every do often clean the soap dispenser. I leave the door open.

Miele . the ones built in Germany still use a cast iron counter weight for the spin cycle as opposed to concrete encased in plastic or whatever. They are proud to show the inner workings of their machine comparing them to lesser quality machines . Most companies don't want you to know how their machines are built .of course this doesn't mean they are divulging everything about their machines .

I don't understand the mold issues. I've owned various front-load washers since the 1990s. Kenmore, Electrolux, Indesit, Bosch, Gorenje, Samsung, LG... Even living in Florida, I've never had a mold problem. I don't do anything other than leave the door open for 24 hours after using it, which is the same as I've treated top loaders. What I also don't understand is why washers are so expensive in the USA. You can get a front-load washer for $180USD in the UK. Feels like there's some price-fixing going on in the USA.

Are you saying that you have had at least 7 w. machines in about 30 years? That's a new one every 4 years. My last w. machine is an LG toploader with bottom impeller, and before that a Simpson agitator model that I replaced after 24 years. (about 6-8 loads a week) You must be hard on your washing machines.

It amazes me that GE is the only one using MicroBan or something similar. Is it a patent thing (doubtful) or just ego not letting them admit GE has a better approach? Personally I'm hoping that LG will fix the ommission of the auto dispenser in their new heat pump Wash Tower when I'm ready to buy again in the next few years.

In my experience top load machines with agitators get clothes (and especially dirty clothes, towels, sheets, etc.) cleaner (in the first and only wash cycle). Hybrids and front loaders not as well.

The only front loaders that are great are commercial models that cost $2,000 - $3,000+ If your looking to spend under $1400 there's only two washer to consider: Speed Queen TC5 and Maytag Commercial. Anyone telling you otherwise is flat out misleading you for other reasons. They aren't recommending a washer that agitates and cleans the best. Their version of 'best' has more to do with optimized, not clean. I know way to much about washer now.

I used both top and front and went back to top due to moving to different home. I noticed front load can't really use all of that capacity. Most effective way to wash in front load is load maybe up to 2/3 at most so they can move around. Meaning there is no way we are going to wash any bedding / large blankets. Or did new front loads fix this now?

True, but here in the UK top loaders were pretty much becoming a thing of the past even in the 1970s when I was still a kid, long before high electricity prices and metered water supplies. People bought front loading automatics because they got clothes cleaner and were gentler on them and they were also considered more convenient. I've only ever seen one top loader in a store and that was a slimline model with a horizontal drum.

Speed queen top load is best there is. It's built the closest to how top load direct drives used to be. Everything else is junk. I have to fix everything. Speed queen is only brand I don't fix often. New whirlpools are junk. Don't be fooled by Maytag "commercial". They are built same as basic Maytag just look fancy. Buy Speed queen hands down.

I disagree respectfully. You cant say " I don't fix them, therefore they must be reliable" , Not that many are sold compared to the other major brands. I am not a Whirlpool fan either, but LG has far less service within the first year than any other machine. BTW, we have logged well over 100,000 service calls to derive that information. Lastly how much is SQ or any other company paying you to fix in warranty. Not much I bet....and with SQ, you have a 7 year warranty....

I agree with speedqueen. The tub seal, spin bearings are so much better. Full size gearcase and motor. Stronger suspension system. It built to last. Yes repairs cost more but are done less frequently. Lg when the lg suspension rods go bad you might as well replace the washer unless you can find a good aftermarket set because of the price and sold an each rather than as a set like whirlpool.

Never had an issue with front loaders and mold, just leave the door open. Our last set only lasted 7 years however, and the current top loaders we have are acting up with the control panels not working properly. Probably back to front loaders again next as my wife is too short to reach the bottom of the tub on a top loader without standing on her tip toes. They all seem like junk as we hardly get more than 7 or 8 years out of a set.

Front load washers DO NOT CLEAN better than a top loader. From my personal experience I have tried Samsung, LG and Electrolux. None them cleaned my clothes as good as my old top loader. They just don't have enough water to fully remove all the dirt and grime. I work in construction and my jeans would come out of the front loaders with dirt still on them. There is absolutely no way you can say front loaders clean better than an old top loader with a straight face.

Conversely, for a little bit of stubborn dirt and grime, however, a front-loader would likely have better agitation and may be the better choice. In short -- use top-loaders for heavily-soiled loads, and front-loaders for quick/efficient light and certainly not-so-dirty ones.

You are wrong with top loaders washers not having mold. We run our central air conditioning unit all summer & no do not open windows until late October so humidity in the house is good all year long. There is a heat vent close to washer. Have found some mold on top of tub on my top load great LG washer that is energy star rated and does not have an alligator. Recently found couple of inches of black mold on one side of detergent / fabrics softer drawer. I now remove drawer and remove 4 blue parts and dry them. Spray top of tub & sides with disinfect several times a week and not seen any mold while using a strong flashlight to inspect areas.Save at least $10 a month on this top loader.

Hi Steve- Totally love your videos we are about to remodel our kitchen and bath and I think I have watched almost every one of them so far! Thank you for your willingness to take time out to share your valuable knowledge. It is appreciated more than you know. (We are in CT and are considering making the drive to your store to see your inventory) As for the washing machine, I am curious as to why you switched from a front to top load? Also not on same topic, but rather than comment on multiple videos, I really like the SKS regular 6 burner rangetop, ( not the sous vide version) but I can't seem to find many reviews by actual consumers. I watched your video on the luxury brands, and was wondering if perhaps you have received any feedback since from customers that have purchased appliances from this line. Thanks for your time and pro advice!

Got a GE UltraFresh front load washer as a gift from my daughter, as she was moving. Upon registration, found machine warranty was running out, so we bought the 3 year warranty offered. Then, the machine failed. No power, no display, just a mysterious clicking sound every 10 seconds or so. Called GE and scheduled a service call. Tech checked the machine and replaced the main board and the power supply. No success. Then he ordered a drive board for the next scheduled visit. Next visit, drive board was replaced. No success. Tech then ordered the front control and communication board and scheduled the next visit. Next visit, front control board and communication board was replaced. No success. Tech then deemed the washer unrepairable. Sent the info to GE and Assurant, the extended warranty company. They were supposed to contact me regarding replacing the machine within 24 to 48 hours. Never heard back from them. Contacted GE Customer Relations. Related all of the above info to them. They referred me to Assurant. The matter is still unresolved, my washer is still not functional, and I would recommend that the consumer NEVER BUY A GE APPLIANCE, EVER!

I had a Whirlpool front load, and NEVER again! It got so smelly, especially around the seal. I didn't want to leave the washer open, and I live in a humid environment, so I doubt leaving the door open would work. The best part of having a top loader is having the ability to soak items.

Ironically, leaving the door open will save your cheaper-built microwave from steam rust. Don't leave it open longer than two minutes, given that the light stays on.

Something that I miss from a Panasonic inverter microwave from Costco that eventually broke is that the light bulb didn't turn on when the door was open, so we routinely always left it open to avoid any moisture problems

I have all Ssmsung in home. The top load where does not fill and tares 9:40 my clothes....and to hard to reach in at 5'6" When I move I will go back to front load

Wish i would have watched sooner. Just had a new LG with 5cubic feet capacity and impeller delivered yesterday. Told home depot to come get it and let me get something different. Does NOT CLEAN dirty clothes. I do construction, clothes get dirty. They litterely told me i cant wash dirty clothes in a washing machine with an impeller. WHAT?!!! Your telling me i cant wash dirty clothes in a washer! Wont let me exchange. Stuck with a 1000 dollar washer that works like crap

You all put out a lot of good videos, but this was not one of them. Drive motors are easy to replace on any washer, top or frontload. The Washer you pictured when you said you would replace the machine due to expense at 5 years, has a 10 year manufacturer warranty on the drive motor. GE's Microban BS has only been out for a couple years, but that's plenty of time to see that they aren't funk-proof. Microban doesn't "solve" the mold/mildew issue, and a lot of the funk comes from the detergent residue, not just mold/mildew anyway. Top load washer absolutely do have standing water in them after a cycle, you just don't see it. It's still exposed to the air though. You showed a picture of a High Efficiency washer with the 40-70gal/cycle overlay. That LG is load-for-load, a better water saver than the whirlpool next to it. Consumers would have to be pretty deliberate these days to get a top-load washer that isn't using modern DoE standards for water efficiency.

@@YaleAppliance1 You may need to have LG come do some instruction for your techs then. Unless the washer is in a tight closet with a Dryer on top, replacing the components covered under warranty is a half-hour job. I never charged more than the diagnostic fee to swap Rotor, Stator, Hall Sensor (Now just Rotor and Stator). There are good KZbin videos showing consumers how to remove and replace a direct drive motor with nothing more than a Philips screw driver, 10mm ratchet and an adjustable wrench. Granted, motor components rarely fail on their own on those LGs, especially since they eliminated the Hall sensor. If we are talking about replacing motor components and bearings because of a tub seal failure, then sure, might not be worth paying a tech to fix. But, the same is true for a top-load. If the agitator/impeller is seized on to the drive shaft, replacing bearings in a top-load (usually the whole "gearcase") can be similarly labor intensive AND parts cost may be a lot higher.

Some of the problem is too much detergent...but we always recommend a capful and run the clean cycles...

Sales people don't get science. Just finance math! Don't ask the person who sold you your tooth brush about dental problems! 159kW is rate of use. So.... 159kW/ hours would be an average electricity use based on average load size and washer settings. That is for an average household. The rate paid for a kWhour is about 10 cents here, not speaking of other fees. So $16.00 compared to $35 dollars is approx. 20 bucks. Over 10 years of operation that 200 bucks is the approximate difference in price. But the use will be more for a bigger washer so the soap ( he ) will cost more. We're diving in the financial dirt here though. The job the washer does is the important thing as well as how long it operates easily and reliably. Everything else is BS!

Couple of things: Utility rates are higher in Boston You use less soap in the larger front load You dry less in the dryer because the spin is 1300 instead of 800 RPM You wash way more clothes in a front load so you have fewer loads in addition to the cost savings Did I mention the clothes arent yanked and knotted in a front load like a top load?

Top load washers are better, because water is actually used. And gravity evenly distributes the water to all parts of the machine. Front load washers are stupid. I used one today, and waited and waited to see some water, but never saw it; and there was very low suds. However, somehow my clothes came out damp, but didn't even smell clean. The force of gravity causes what little water there is to go down to the bottom. These machines are just plain weird. Everything is getting so weird in society

front load washers are absolute junk.. they dont use enough water to properly clean clothes.. they cost more.. they are more expensive to buy and to repair.. do yourself a favor buy an older style top load washer that doesnt have a bunch of features and extra computers to mess up.. my front load had to be repaired twice in the first year.. i regret ever buying it and will never buy another.. i would rather have a wringer washer and will be replacing this one with a top load when i can no longer justify fixing it

@@YaleAppliance1 i bought a very used top load washer that lasted over 10 years.. i bought a new frontload that needed repaired twice in the first year and i am sure will be thrown out in the next year or two.. saving 10 dollars a year on electricity and water doesnt offset buying a new appliance every 3-5 years

Not that surprising really -- top-load washers use more water and are more heavy-duty. But front-load washers use may be more economical for folks with very light loads and/or very non-soiled/clean ones...
