I have a Yamaha 2000X66 that has been bogging down around 2000 RPM fuel system is good. Check the neutral safety switch also called a neutral cut off switch.

Finally figured it out. Essentially, the shift cables were bunched and was not allowing the correct engagement of the shift switch. It was stuck slight before engaging the switch fully.

Could you elaborate? I think I’m having a similar issue

The shift linkage was becoming bunched up in the corner and was not engaging the neutral switch enough to make the engine run correctly. When the switch is active it will make the top and bottom cylinder fire sporadically. Originally i thought the problem was fuel related, because it seemed there was a lack of fuel pressure, not the problem. Then started diagnosing electrical. Found that the shift cutout switch when unplugged allowed the engine to run as normal, but would shift into gear rough, as expected. Ran it for sometime like that, but eventually had a boat mechanic friend tell me to check the linkage. When i did i noticed the length of the cables where not long enough to disengage the shift cutout switch, thus leading to all of my problems. @@eyeTHC

Neutral Switch Sensor. Crazy, but that is what I just figured out.

I believe that's what's wrong with my 2001 ox66. But you cannot test for connection on the switch unless your prop is under load. Just FYI. Out of water the switch will never engage. And that part is called shift cutout switch. The nuetral switch is totally different. The nuetral switch doesn't allow the motor to start if it senses it out of nuetral. But did u figure out your problem?

Thank you for the video, it was very informative!! Does that switch have to have something with the kill switch, my engine doesn't spark, and when I bought the engine that same bottom part right there on your video was disassembled by someone, so I am trying to build everything back as it was. I am not a mechanic neither I want to pay 250 for just someone who tells me, ohh it was just this. That's why this kind of video is so important, Good Job!!

not that i am aware of, but you may check to see if your model has a neutral safety switch, not the shift cutout switch. If the nss is not lined up it may not let the engine start.

That red ring inside your fuel filter is supposed to go on the white filter not under it just fyi. I doubt that’s the issues your having but it doesn’t go under it it goes on the white legs.

My friend we’ve been having a problem all summer we think it’s a neutral switch because they get it to operate on all six cylinders. Now we have a trick when we shut it off stick it in drive, then stick it back in neutral, and it works on all six cylinders, but you said I could just disconnect the neutral switch until I get a new one will that work? Can I drive with a neutral switch disconnect it because I’m 99% sure that’s the problem it was we turn it off and it would work on four cylinders only.

check your linkage cables

What did you do to the linkage to fix the issue?

And how hard is it to replace the neutral switch? Is it just those two little screws and it pops out when you put the new one in
@bigcook139 ай бұрын
yes, it is not hard to replace, but mine was fine. it was my linkage cable not allowing it to engage/disengage properly
