The video lives on. Thanks for this. I just picked up a dirty race tuned v650 and it backfired like mad and i wondered if it was because of secondary or direct air injection. I deleted the SAIS on my triumph scrambler 900 to great success and effect and when i saw the rusting tubes on the Yamaha i wondered if there were, and they are. And they are no more.

So i just recently bought a 650 bobber build bike. Absolutely loving it with one minor problem. I am getting a bit of vibration that is more than normal. Seems to just be in certain ranges. I was thinking there might be two culprits between needing a carb sync or the removed AIS system. With aftermarket exhaust prompting the removal and the carbs being cleaned before buying. Wondering if there might be any suggestions out there? Understood that the AIS shouldn't be affecting it at all, but still wondering if its running richer than needs be..
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 7 ай бұрын
AIS is a post ignition system so it's not a likely culprit - but check the pulse port on the inlet manifold to make sure that it is properly blocked and you don't have an intake air leak. Worth double checking the exhaust AIS port too to make sure it is sealed properly too so it isn't impacting on the exhaust scavenging.

where you used the fitting on the back on the copper elbow question, mine is leaking oil out of there around it ? does that sound normal ? so I wouldn't be able to use the shark bite I would have to physically take the rear elbow out , also the little aluminum box to the right with 2 screws on the valve cover have a slight leak there is that a gasket under it or would gasket flex seal work?
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 2 жыл бұрын
Oil isn't normal - the AIS is connected to the exhaust so not connected to anywhere that gets oil. I would assume it's leaking from somewhere else and coming out there. Perhaps part of the other oil leak? You can see the gaskets here - www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/6367942/xvs650a-dragstar-classic-4c57-2006-060-a/cylinder-head

Does removing the Ais system help the bike run cooler
@sportshooter9369
@sportshooter9369 5 ай бұрын
NO. See below... Ahhh... Anybody that fully understands WHAT the AIS actually does and how it benefits smooth running and INCREASES performance by way of INCREASING exhaust gas flow will absolutely NOT disable the AIS. When you disable the AIS you certainly WILL have 'popping from the pipe' because you have just screwed up carburation tuning by reducing exhaust gas flow efficiency. Why did exhaust gas flow better with AIS functioning? Because introducing fresh air (oxygen) into the exhaust keeps the flame coming out of the port and into the exhaust system burning longer and stronger. Of course that will make the exhaust gas hotter... It is Proven FACT that hotter exhaust gas flows more easily and readily than 'cooler' exhaust gas. I have performance re-tuned TONs of V-Star 650's under various states of performance modification including dealing with machines that came in the shop with the AIS removed. You can get rid of popping from the pipe by re-tuning the carburation to match the reduction in exhaust flow but tuning will be 'touchy' due to the loss of exhaust flow efficiency and overall PERFORMANCE WILL SUFFER.! My experience is not limited to the V-Star in this area. ALL Japanese machines exhibit the same benefit of a hotter exhaust flow. Proven years before AIS was introduced to our motorbikes. Again... It is proven FACT that the hotter the exhaust gas the more readily and easily it will flow. The AIS does that for you.
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 5 ай бұрын
No, it has no noticeable impact on cooling. Cooling has always been an issue with air cooled V twins in this configuration since the rear cylinder receives less air and that air has already been heated by the front cylinder and exhaust to some degree.

Have you installed pod filters on xv 650 ? How to do that
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius Ай бұрын
I haven't. Generally pod filters make bikes run badly - manufacturers fit airboxes for a reason, so I don't fit them. With a v-twin where the air intake is central you would need to fit a single large one where the current air filter is, so not much gain in looks.
@HamaZia
@HamaZia Ай бұрын
@MotoMirius yeh thank you, the problem with manufacturers air box is big and takes large space
@MotoMirius

@@HamaZia Indeed but it is there for a reason. You could argue that you want to remove one of the cylinders because it takes up too much space - but is that a good enough reason to create poor running of the bike?

There are different causes of the siund but normally louder if you are not running the stock system. Different people like different levels of sound and depending where you live there may be legal controls enforced. So there is no global right or wrong.

There are only two Legal aftermarket exhaust system we can buy for xvs650 in swiss which are Silvertail and Cromoline . and ws should keep the DB killer inside. So it stay below 90decible. before i changs the pipe the stock deliver quiet sound more like a seqing machine. The kickback i mentioned is when after accelerating and lose it i heard the kickback like shooting .i have that sounds even in " idle " on my last harley sporster. Thank you Sir and wish you have a nice weekend.
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 3 жыл бұрын
@@abigail_mcleod There are a couple of causes. Often happens when you've accelerated and then you shut down the throttle hard (say accelerate out of a hairpin then shut it down hard for the next hairpin bend, especially downhill) - so these is unburnt fuel which is ejected into the hot exhaust and explodes. Can happen too with the choke on, so not all the fuel burns. This is OK. But it can also happen when the mix is too lean. When you fit a high flow exhaust you also check if you need a bigger jet in the carb. If this is the cause of the backfire then it can be damaging your engine. Happens on all bike, Harley or Yamaha. So you need be sure which you have because engine rebuilds are much more expensive than exhausts and getting a mechanic to check the jetting.
@abigail_mcleod
@abigail_mcleod 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoMirius oh my now it scares me 😥 but when i bought that exhaust it says no jetting needed. and true Sir . it happens when i go downhill or remove the trottel but not when the choke on and actualy the exploation is not that loud compare to old harley . almost non but are there . so maybe not much Fuel burns in exhaust ? Btw Sir , i wish you are my neighbour but Lord God said no maybe Lord think i will bother you everyday. 😂 Best regards
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 3 жыл бұрын
@@abigail_mcleod If its downhill then that is generally OK. Tuning is complicated. When you ride high up, the oxygen levels are lower so the ignition of fuel is less efficient. With modern fuel injection this can lead to problems - but not so much with carbs.

The popping is the best part. Why remove it ?
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 2 жыл бұрын
If you have drag pipes then you will still get popping. Mostly the reason for removing it is cosmetics - it's a big ugly add on that does little and doesn't really need to be there.

Has anyone put a 1000cc or bigger motor in a vstar 650 classic? I own a 2001 vstar 650 classic,it has a custom paint job,lots of being,lowered,so I've put a bit of money in it just because. I want to know if there's any possibility of putting a 1000cc or bigger motor in the 650 and what fab work etc is needed? Even converting to belt drive would be nice.Willing to do whatever to make it work but was hoping someone out there has done this already.

@@greggo7978 Makes sense. I sold an 800cc Suzuki Boulevard a while back, and just bought an 1100 V Star. The V Star just seems heavier. Doesn't handle as well. Engine torque not that much different if any.

Hello. Why I have oil leaking and inside the AIS?
@MotoMirius
@MotoMirius 2 жыл бұрын
AIS isn't connected to any part of the oiling system, so that suggests you've an issue in the heads or the crankcase ventilation system is blocked

I'm doing this to my bike ASAP. It pops alot cause I have a free flowing exhaust.
@MotoMirius

It should help - won't necessarily fully cure it because sometimes like on overrun there will be enough oxygen and fuel dumped into the pipes to pop.

It depends on why you are removing it. Did your caplock key get stuck?
@sportshooter9369

@@MotoMirius The question is why would anybody remove the AIS. Of course the answer is lack of knowledge along with internet myth that leads to bad information being parroted as fact, like we have here. A caplock is the firing mechanism for a muzzle loading rifle. Similar to but NOT to be confused with the flintlock mechanism.

@@sportshooter9369 I could not care less for the performance on my 650 Dragstar. I would question why anyone would care. I removed it because the bike is a Harley clone and it's just ugly. Now don't get me wrong, getting more power from smaller capacity bikes has always been and always will be a thing - I just don't care on the Dragstar and I can't say I've ever found any strong level of care about it. I'm guessing that you never actually bothered watching the video did you? Because if you did, you would realise how much of a fool you are making of yourself and you are just digging yourself deeper with every reply. Now are you going to come clean and admit that this post is just an advert for you services isn't it? And on that basis I would be completely justified in deleting everything you post.

@@MotoMirius Nope. Retired after a long carrier in the industry... Sorry, it's just that I have SEEN too many people screw up a virtually perfect performance upgrade (and tuning) by disabling the AIS because they saw an internet video that convinced them because the AIS is an Evil pollution reducing device it must be done away with. I just believe truth is important, even with total strangers. Disabling the AIS harms overall performance with the single exception of when at WFO throttle. Delete if you must. You will never be able to delete the truth.
