One of the best and most in depth descriptions of the Atmosfeel system I have seen/heard. Thank you. I've been looking at numerous classical crossover guitars, and this NCX/NTX family does seem to be the best. Ordinary piezo systems just aren't good enough.

Very nice demo, Yamaha is lucky to have you as a product ambassador, we get the perspective of a pro working guitarist! Your a guy who has TONS of experience playing out and using instruments/gear in "Real World Applications" which speaks volumes, anyone who has gigged night after night knows the value of good equipment. I really like the battery compartment and also the fact that it takes 2 AA, and 28hrs usage with alkaline - thats great... the indicator light on the Volume knob is a cool feature too, you would never be able to see where your volume is set in the dark "or" know that you have limited time on your battery's. The "Mix" feature between PU's is really cool too, thats very nice to have that control :-) As always thanks for sharing and look forward to future videos and reviews on this guitar as time goes on!

So funny you showed that early Yamaha guitar. My first guitar, when I was 12yo in 1973 was very similar to that old Yamaha, but with a slightly different headstock. This is why I'm thinking of returning to a nylon string guitar 50 odd years later. Thanks for the review, very helpful.

I tested three of these instruments. They all had buzzing problems with the strings on one or the other fret. Had to send them back. Unfortunately. It’s not easy to get a guitar with classical neck size of 52 mm that has a nice electronic built in.

First Yamaha I’ve ever had; first electric acoustic I’ve ever had that used 2 AA batteries… Do you know if the plastic guide thingie behind the knobs can be removed? I don’t know if I will, just curious. Also, don’t remember if you mention it in this review, but I didn’t know it would come with a sound hole cover…

Very comprehensive, very complete run through of this guitar. Probably the best I've seen on any guitar. Not a 'salesy - check out my licks' thing either. A brand ambassador with sincerity. Having said that, and only going on youtube tryouts by similar spokespeople, this guitar's alive. I've been looking at Cordoba, which is a great quality instrument, in the same price range, but this has a more open, natural sound. Or so it seems to me.

I just ordered one of these so soon I'll be able to compare it to my Cordoba Fusion Orchestra. I love my Cordoba Fusion Orchestra with Savarez Cantiga strings (I replace the high E with the high E from a set of medium tension Sevilla strings - the Savarez high E strings never seem to match the rest of the set). The Cordoba is a cedar top which gives it a warm feel.

Very interesting throughout and a really clear exposition of the instrument. I'm driving myself nuts trying to get a decent recorded sound from my piezo P/U and clunking around with mics to blend etc. This system might do a better job. I can't get to any shops at present and daren't buy online without trying one first. This really helped. Thanks.

The NCX and NTX models are amazing; I have the NTX1200R and NCX1200R. The NCX sounds a little dry compared to other classical guitars in its class, like the Takamine ec132sc. However, the NCX has an unbelievably balanced sound. And as you mentioned, it is very dynamic. Thanks for the review.

Mariano Perez thank you for the comment! I’m very happy with the NCX3. I found live I’ve had to move the mic knob to around 10:00 as compared to my favorite setting in this video at the 2:00 pm setting. Looking forward to using this for a session this weekend. Do you find that on the NTX you can shred some single lines easier than yin can on a traditional classical guitar?

@@mundojuillerat yes, playability is so much easier on the NTX. In addition, the NTX is so much punchier so it is better for strumming parts. It probably has to do with the longer scale and 14 frets. The down side is that you lose that full body bass when you play acoustically on the NTX. The Ntx1200r is the guitar I use the most. I also prefer to use carbon strings on it, I feel it makes the guitar louder. If you keep an eye out you can get it used for like $500 to $700. I got lucky with the NCX1200 and got it for $400. Keep on rocking!

Great sound samples. I'd buy this guitar based upon the pickup / mic configuration alone. I wish newer guitar models would offer a rechargeable battery insert for the on-board power supply. Maybe something that could be developed and inserted the same as the battery tray?

Thank you! About the rechargeable battery idea it's possible and a great idea. My problem (which might only be a me thing) is that to my ears real batteries sound better than rechargeable ones. Weird right? I do use rechargeables in the Mystere show for both Yamaha acoustics. I going to try a new type of rechargeable battery that holds it's full charge until it needs to be recharged. Might do a video when I get it. Thanks again.

What I'm seeing is convenience because you don't need to worry about mic placement, which could work very nice in both home recording scenarios or live. I also suspect that the Spruce top and the particular bracing used is going to eliminate a boomy bass, but that's just speculation. The real question is, how does it compare to a X/Y condenser setup. Hard to say without having the instrument to compare. But at first glance it seems like it might even be able to hold up.

Hello ! Thank you for this great video. I cannot decide myself between the NCX3 with the cedar top and this one with the spruce top ! I have a beautiful Norman ST-40 with cedar top (it's just mellow) and a Manuel Rodriguez classical guitar with cedar top, which sounds very warm... What a difficult decision to make...

Good problem to have- it's a decision between two good guitars! I think I mentioned in the vid that I always opt for cedar. It's my favorite warm sound. In my opinion cedar sounds very warm and big for the player but maybe doesn't cut thru a band all the time. I wanted to try something new with the NCX3 and went with spruce. I'm happy I did as it's a brighter in a sweet way than my cedar gts, and it's a more focused tone for the listening audience. Just my two cents. Have fun choosing and let me know what you decide on?!

Hi. Great review. I have a question. The pickup of the Yamaha NCX 1200R, you can set the bass, mids and treble separately. it doesn't seem that it is possible on this new Atmosfeel pickup system of the NCX 3 and NCX 5. Is this true, or am I missing something?

Thank you! And yes same electronics but the NTX5 should have a thinner neck with upgraded tone woods. Walnut back and sides, ebony fingerboard and European Sitka spruce top. But double check those stats to make sure I’m right haha?? I’m just going by my memory!

I love the sound of this pickup but after fooling around with it I find it works best when you use a lot a microphone which initially makes it sound bassy but then you add treble with post EQ I get from my DI box. A EQ pedal is essential with this pickup but with it you will have amazing sound.

I think that's a personal decision you have to make. It's not a flamenco guitar which I think traditionally is all spruce right? But I also string my NCX3 with high tension Savarez strings. Those are the same strings I've always used on my flamenco guitar and they just feel right for me on the NCX3.

He said in an interview that he worked with this old music book called Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar (book 1) I found the book and started working on it around the time of this video. I'm just playing one of the examples from the book. Since I was studying it, it was just on my mind for this vid. I would also like to thank you for your great job on NX series (this one and other videos). I used to play on classical guitar, and It seems I've found my next instrument (NTX3), ideally accommodating my existing skills and the needs for fingerstyle jazz and maybe some other non-classical styles. @@DmitryGrab Hi Dimitry, I must say that the Mickey Baker book was the first Jazz book I ever ha d at high school ! and it was great for showing you the basic shapes and chord progressions, brilliant book for that. But ofcourse , if you want some tougher stuff and more about single line playing , Joe Pass has some brilliant tutorial books out there.

Troy I answered this last week and I guess it didn’t post-Sorry! Here’s my opinion, but chose your path- you can’t make a bad decision between these two axes. Cedar tops are my all time favorite. They seem warmer right off the bat and can appear to sound ‘older.’ My favorite gypsy jazz guitar has a cedar top. But (Once again my opinion) I think this big warm pleasant sound pleases the player more than the way it translates to the listener/audience. What they get is a warm sound that often doesn’t cut thru the mix and might not have as much clarity as you’d like. For this reason I thought I’d thought I’d try the spruce top. For my pro gigs it’s really working out and translates fantastically thru the mix. Let me know how it works out for you?!

Can the treble be rolled enough to play Jazz or Gypsy Jazz - with a less bright sound?

Definitely you be able to get some cool jazz tones a la Ritenour and Earl Klugh! Gypsy Jazz has that maccaferri selmer sound but if you want to break out of that mold?…. Sebastian Ginieux (sp?) uses a DuPont hybrid nylon string guitar…. This guitar might not be loud enough in an unplugged gypsy jazz jam tho.

Thank you very much - some good food for thought. I am looking to use a small acoustic amp for small scale venues but many of the sessions are purely acoustic . As a mandolin player - scale length is very important to me . For steel strings guitars- the smaller the better but there is a tone and volume trade off in many cases. Have not found the sweet spot yet . I am not seeing the range of scale lengths in nylon guitars that one sees in steel acoustics and electrics (23 to 26 inches) . The shorter scale nylon guitars are poor quality and targeted to children's or beginners market. The DuPont hybrid seems interesting. I need to have a look. Great video demo - very impressive. - as are most Yamaha products. (MY mid 1970s Yamaha dreadnought is 50 years old and sounds warm and full. What a a warm rich tone. question for you Mundo. The strings you are using on the NCX3 are? Yours sound better than the ncx3 strings that came on mine from Sweetwater... Still the sound and atmosfeel are superb. I went with the NCx3 vs the ncx1, ebony fingerboard, walnut body, spruce top, mahogany neck. Yamaha did an awesome job on this guitar...I did use the soundhole cover it was amazing how it stopped the feedback...

Way to go on the ncx3! Did a few sessions with it and I’m still very happy and impressed with the Atmosfeel! I’m excited to explore the SH cover when we play live again! As far as the strings possibly they’ve been sitting on the guitar for a while? These are the strings that came with the guitar. I wanted to keep the video as transparent as I could? Also Yamaha’s stringing was much better than when I restring a nylon! I also have nails on my right hand and strike the string often with the nail and flesh of my fingers....? And I use Anatomy if Sound guitar picks which sound amazing on acoustics. I’ve restrung my ncx3 with Savarez 520-R. Only for the reason that I grew up using Savarez and they feel and sound right. What do you use? Hope this helps and thanks for view!

Hey, great review! I'm thinking of ordering an NCX3C, but I'm concerned about a noise issue in the battery compartment that I saw in a couple of reviews on KZbin. They say it's some kind of "something's loose" thing making noise depending on the playing position. Did you notice something like that? Maybe the great idea of that compartment is not so great... That'd be a deal breaker for me. I love AA batteries instead of 9V, though!

I haven’t heard of that issue or have had any noise problems. I’ve recorded with it many times direct thru the pickup system into my daw and it’s great. Also I work in a big show here in Vegas five nights a week and once again going direct to the house if there was any noise concerns out audio guys would’ve told me. Hope that helps?!

@@mundojuillerat, Thank you for your reply. I finally ordered an NCX3C and there's no noise issue either. Actually... It sounds fantastic. What I do notice is a difference with a Raimundo 631 in terms of attack and mids. Did an A/B test with my friend's Raimundo. The Yamaha lacks in string attack compared to the Raimundo, which sounds more flamenca, more percussive in the attack and mid focused. Yamaha is much more rounded and balanced, more smooth... More suited for bossa nova than flamenco/classical. Also, Atmosfeel makes no noise at all, while the Clasica Blend has a buzz at high volume. Different character guitars... I'm quite happy with the Yamaha, even though I'd like it to be a little more percussive (string attack). Cheers, and thank you again!

Hi Felipe I'm not familiar with the 1200r model. The NCX 3 has the Atmosfeel pickup system and I think the 1200r has the A.R.T. system. (Double check this, and compare woods, neck size and bracing for detailed info) I can only speak to the Atmosfeel and tell you it's fantastic!

I could get a Yamaha NTX 5 for 1.150 Euro; its +1 year old but in very good shape (as it looks from the pics) Sounds like a good offer, but I'd had to buy it without trying it; two others are NTX 700 for 400 and 500 Euro. What do you think about it ?

That’s gotta be your call. It does sound like a good offer and the 3 and especially the NTX 5 are quality builds. Remember the NTX series are a little thinner bodied with a comfortable neck compared to the more standard guitar and neck shape of the NCX series. Let me what you decided on?!

Is there any significant difference in sound between ncx3 and ncx5 ? And what do you think about the craftmanship ncx3 compare to ncx5? Both guitars almost has the same specs, but the prices difference quite far.. i know ncx5 made in Japan maybe thats the reason its more expensive...

I’ve never played the ncx5 but it does have premium woods over the ncx3. For instance I think it has European spruce as opposed to the ncx3’s Sitka spruce.... sometimes I find it makes a difference when mic’ing guitars in the studio but that’s highly subjective. If you can find a place where you can check them both out. I’d love to hear what you think?!

Yes I do use the mic, but sparingly. As a sideman I'm in the back doing my best to provide a nice sound with no feedback. (I could use more of the mic but I'm not taking that chance when we're at stage volume) But compared to working with my previous nylons-those guitars always had the mic off. Btw I'm using an AER amp when working and using it as a guitar monitor with the house getting a DI feed from the amp.

Hello Mundo. Can I ask you what you think of the bass frequencies on the NCX3. I have often found that pickups fitted on classical guitars have a lot of bass which can be very hard to control. How is it on this guitar. Thank you for a great review. Michael Ireland

Great question for all acoustic preamps. In general I don't push the bass too much but I'll do my best to keep the sound "warm." From there it seems soundmen always have me add more treble or reduce the bass. So for giggings situations I guess it's the treble that counts the most hah! In all my gear videos I keep them all neutral with no eq. I wish I would/could add some "studio love" but that takes away the transparency of the piece of gear I'm showcasing. Case in point is my Godin Gypsy Jazz Multiac video- that guitar sounds so much better than the transparent video I made.... BUT when I record I do always engage a hi pass filter on the microphones etc. That takes away a lot of unusable and non musical bass frequencies. From there I add bass to my taste. I really like the three knobs that control the NCX3 Altmosfeel pickup system. Super intuitive and I just plug into my computer and it sounds glorious. (on important sessions I always mic acoustics. Now I can mic and add the Atmosfeel!) On the NCX3 I've found that when I get the bass sounding the way I like it, it's still slightly too "bassy" whether in the studio or live. If I back it off a bit I'll get a sweet spot that pops in the mix. My electric playing might be informing my ears as well- I like my electrics dark and warm sounding. I hope that helps. Let me know what you think of the bass frequencies in the NCX3.

Using a luthier is great for hardware installs. I don't know what preamps would be good? Maybe Fishman? Maybe contact Yamaha to see if they install their systems or have any advice?

Yes I use it every night in the Mystere show here in Las Vegas. It is getting normal wear from all the stage use but structurally its holding up and electronically it's been perfect. Often the nut will wear with time but I've had no issues.... Also what normally get's worn down is the battery compartment and my NCX3 has been stellar. I now use re-chargeable batteries and I will say from my experience with this axe normal alkaline batteries sound better. Just by a little but I notice that ha!

So you have a great pickup,with an ok but not great sounding guitar ,which can be fine in group settings but lacks nuance in a solo setting.Will check it out.Jose Gonzalez seems to have it dialed in using great guitars and a Fishman system (and good sound people :)

Thank you Bob! I use Savarez 520 R nylon strings. Haven't tried other makes/brands but I've used Savarez forever and they just feel right for me. I like the tension They have a 520 J for higher tension-which is good as well, when suited to the right guitar. I do get lazy and sometimes leave them on too long, only changing them out when they don't hold tuning and intonation. (usually buy Savarez strings at www.stringsandbeyond.com) Let me know what strings you like on your NTX3?

Exactly! 5 months ago in the description and in the first comment I put a "Skip the Talk" timestamp list. As far as the battery compartment section I feel that's a huge positive from the professional perspective. For instance in my last show Le Reve (Las Vegas) we changed out batteries everyday. What ends up getting compromised is always the battery compartment. This is true for electric guitars and basses as well. Sometimes the actual compartment gets loose and pieces (like the compartment door latches) break. Other times the stress of constant battery changes pulls on the actual wiring and when that happens the whole preamp shuts down. I've seen this happen on two of my acoustics, one electric and two different bassists I've worked with in the pit. So for me this Yamaha system is huge and needed to be talked about.

I was familiar with the NCX3 from NAMM 2020. Loved the guitar and my big decision was whether to get a cedar or spruce top. Did not try the NCX5 but I do know that it has premium woods etc. In my opinion that makes a difference when you are in the studio mic’ing acoustic guitars. I was clearly looking for a live gig pro guitar that fit my budget and more importantly had a great pickup system- the Atmosfeel which for live applications is probably more important. Having said that with the virus putting us in lockdown I’ve used the NCX3 for multiple sessions and have been very happy with it whether I’ve used the pickups system or microphones. Just heard the “No Guitar Is Safe” Lee Ritenour podcast and he talks briefly about both these models. Check it out and let me know what you decide on?!

@@mundojuillerat Hello Mundo, thanks again for the detailed answer. I think I'll go with the NCX3. That's more reasonable for a "just for fun" player like me. I saw Lee Ritenours KZbin clips with the NCX5. But in the video and the podcast he never goes really into explaining the differences. And I can't hear any significant difference played by different artist here. Looking forward to your next clips. You are very good in explaining your art from the perspective of daily usage and craft. Gives us laymen some inside.

@@mundojuillerat wow, checked the price differences on Sweetwater, and the 5 line is much more expensive. Like $1799 vs. $999. I’m familiar with the Red Label series, and I know that those 5s are built in Yamaha’s custom shop in Japan, while the 3s are made in China.

@@marigner This guitar is an involution of the Yamaha NCX1200r/2000 series. The NCX3 series uses woods that are not adapted to the classic guitar and relaunches the Piezzo+MIC, an instead system.

@@marigner Well, let's start with the construction of the guitar. Admittedly, the guitar should function as a speaker. The back and sides serve to vibrate the top. However, the use of certain woods (jacaranda/maple) in the back and sides gives a special coloring to the timbre. Using walnut for classical guitars is ridiculous. Must be good for ukuleles, not guitars. This is the biggest involution I was talking about. Remember that NCX2000 and 1200 were solid rosewood or maple. In low models, like the NCX 700 you mentioned, they were walnut, which is already a ukulele limit. As far as sound capture is concerned, this guitar also has the excellent transducer with dampers to avoid feedback. However, it lost the pan control and the parametric equalizer for the transducers. It comes with a debatable quality bass/treble control and a crappy piezzo allied to a microphone. This combination is of proven ineffectiveness. The microphone only serves to add bass residues and feedback hazards to the sound. The piezzo comes in with the plastic. This video has a nice guitar player with one of the worst guitar sounds I've ever heard in my life. Not even Godin is that bad (not to mention the excess reverb). The statement is that Yamaha lost the car of evolution by saving on wood and investing in old technology. Why after inventing an excellent transducer (at least three centimeters in diameter) with a revolutionary suspension system, he decided to go backwards. It was along this path that she should walk, and without skimping on the quality of the woods. If you want some advice, look for the old NCX 900/1200 or 2000. The rest use it for a barbecue.
