Dear Norcal, love your videos, I follow your videos all the time. I have a problem with my Yamaha RX-V685. I bought it brand new from Australia (since it was not available in my country at the time) back in December 2018. Worked like a charm till September 2019 where I had to travel overseas again for a month. I unplugged everything from the wall socket and came back after one month. Plugged everything back again, worked fine for a day, and the FL display on the Yamaha started acting up. It displayed some weird symbols and the screen went off. I switched off and switched on again, and the display does not come back on. But the rest of the AMP works just fine. However, if you leave it on for a while, you can see the weird symbols come on again, and once in a while (very rarely) you can see the correct display what should be displayed. I took this to the Yamaha dealer in my country, and they said the whole digital processing board (that is where the FL display ribbon cable connects) had to be replaced. I am convinced that this can be repaired and the dealer just too lazy to trouble shoot like you do. Do you have any pointers which I could trouble shoot this kind of problem? I tried to find the schematic diagram, but couldn't find any. Maybe my resources are not as good at yours. Your input on this is highly appreciated. Thank you so much and keep up the good work. Look forward to hearing from you.

That was very interesting, wish you would investigate what the problem is with Yamaha CX A5200 XLR outputs. Bought one and it doesn't like my active loudspeakers via XLR, sound goes all phasey in stereo.

Im Wondering what could cause this PCB failure. High current? But through which component, those small smd parts are OK....

This was very informative. I have a V483 which I bought from new and I've just plugged a sub into the preout and I have the same annoying hum. I can't see how it could have possible blown the traces as the subs powersupply is double insulated. I guess I'll give it a teardown at some point to understand whats wrong.

Hey saw your video, thanks a lot for the into. Have a problem with subwoofer outs, both front and back are partially working. For a Yamaha amp RX-A2021 both sub outputs sending very quiet signal to the sub, there is something coming out but it’s really low maybe 10-20% of what it should be, any ideas what’s causing that? Speakers set to small and crossover tried 90 and 110hz. Do you think it could be receiver hardware related?
@norcal7153 жыл бұрын
Look in the original owners manual and do a complete reset 1st. Let me know if it helps.

NorCal715 factory reset did not work. I tried maniacal setup to make sure speakers were set to small and crossover correctly set. Still nothing, when trying to use ypao it says error W1 out of phase. Could it be an issue with the sub? It’s brand new Polk psw108. Thanks again for your help.

Try and play music from a mp3 player or phone and connect it to the sub, is the audio still low? Just trying to isolate a receiver or subwoofer issue.

Nice fix, but are we done? As the guy says in the movie "The Core", what's on the other side of the equation? What would have burnt that track clean off the board, especially an earth/ground track? Has the power supply in the sub-woofer box become dangerous (switch mode with direct mains connection, failure of insulation or something.). Get payment quick before the customer is in the morgue.

I have a 20 year old Yamaha HTR-5550 receiver. My 15 year old JBL subwoofer stopped working a couple weeks ago. Tried a new subwoofer and not working either. I've been troubleshooting with no success. So is the problem my sub output? Any ideas?
@norcal7152 жыл бұрын
Hook up a MP3 player or equivalent to the input of the subwoofer (a known good audio source). If it plays sound then the subwoofer is good.

So what caused those traces to go bad? Was it the sub?
@ThePreyMantas5 жыл бұрын
I think NC is suspecting an issue with the sub-woofer itself. Hopefully the customer is smart enough to let him check it out and correct the issue or it could continue burning stuff up doing more damage. All the components on the boards checked out ok.

Hey, my rx-v371 wont recognise my subwoofer even tho i have everything correctly. What should i do. There is no sound when i put or remove my cable in subwoofer output. It gives 0 sounds for subwoofer
@norcal7154 жыл бұрын
If you touch the tip of the subwoofer plug (unplugged from the receiver and still connected to the subwoofer) do you hear a humm? You should and if you do not the sub is the problem, not the receiver.
