Yamaha MODX - Pattern Sequencer - Data Structure & Pattern Length

I think till today there's a lack of information about the Yamaha Montage/MODX sequencing feature so I'll start to demonstrate the usage in a different way. If you find the helpful, maybe I continue making a series of videos using the pattern squencer and song building workflow.
Please excuse not talking live, since I'm not good at this, at least in english - so I used a text-to-speech service instead of.

No doubt 2 “visuals” are needed. A simple track view, like is represented in the video, and being able to drill down into a piano roll. The Fantom gets this right with the clip view (despite its many other shortcomings) and I think Yamaha will need to put something like that in to keep the platform relevant, especially considering the new MODX+….

Thank you. I made a big mistake not to differentiate between measures and beats! However, there could be a lot more to do. These synthesizers still aren't sufficiently tought to the public I believe! Also try the split function, there you can make two patterns out of one. As I saw from the results, you already have a good way to arrange your songs. BTW, the voice is an artificial text-to-speech character.

@@SOPM2007 "These synthesizers still aren't sufficiently tought to the public ..." ... I strongly agree!!! Yamaha only delivers theory. Nothing about "how to apply when creating an arrangement". For (synth)beginners a practical approach or such visual demonstrations is much better. For all features I use to watch many, many videos and make notices so to get a complete picture of what is up.

Nice clip! Can I create "overlapping"? I want to use multiple "tracks" in order to create a complexe accompaniment. If I got it right, the sequencer is continoulsy looping every single track. So even if I record 4 measures, i cannot stop this track after 4 measures from playing. So I can switch to chaining. But there overlapping is not possible. Is there any solution with those to features? I mean by crafting, not recording a complete MIDI-Song.

Honestly I never used and understood what the chaining feature is. I only can guess what is the right way for you to make your performance. You may have to set up all your tracks and then exporting them to the 16 tracks in song mode. This way you can build up your song with different parts repeating a specific amount of measures, then going on. I'm still not sure what you meant by „overlapping“.

@@SOPM2007 Thanx for your answer. The song I am making is not possible without chaining. At least it is a fine thing to craft a accompaniment out of short tracks. "Overlapping" means, that the comming melody/part beginns at 4th; not at 1st. No problem as far. I reached to manage it. A bit of thinking and crafting ;) BUT ... I have a (beat)sequence that allways changes the Superknob-Position to minimum. But I need it at maximum. I saved it in the scene on max. I recorded with max. But it allways sets it to min. What is wrong?

@@ChordFreak As I experienced in the past, the MODX software alwasys records the SuperKnob initial position for every recording you made. So if you don't want the SuperKnob to reset, you have to delete the appropiate event after all recordings.

@@SOPM2007 Problem solved. Still a mystery where it came from. Solution is either to start a new pattern or to erase the superknob-data (SysEx) out of the track.

please make a tutorial on how to make a scenes with drums bass etc with custom drum arpegiios to use a modx as an arranger keyboard...theres no tutorial about this....regards and thank you....

Hi! At the moment, I don't have my MODX in use but I will propably set it up again once I've some things done before. I'm surprised that there're still no suitable tutorials, with the help of which your desired plan can be done. Once you know how to create custom arpeggios, everything else should be self-explanatory - but I'll see...

Yamaha is pain in the ass, you've got a huge touch screen, MAKE SOME USE OUT OF IT Yamaha! This is like 1980s sequencing.

IKR. What is wrong with having a simple piano roll?

@@scottduke9713 It would help in two areas - the pattern sequencer (track view at minimum). But the arpeggiator definitely needs that visual. Hopefully in about 10 days - they will reveal updates at NAMM 2023....
