😁👍 I guess, Jeremy is that fit - because he not just teaches - how to masterfully play piano for a living, but he also hauls every time his own piano to his students 😁 No joke, I am of the same stature as Jeremy is, being myself a stage keyboard player for more than 20 years 😁 These pro keyboards are heavy - they weigh 30lbs + no need to go to a gym, if you're a touring keyboard player.

I gave up my piano when my husband and I moved to a retirement community. I missed having it for learning choral pieces. I decided to purchase a keyboard of some kind, as I don't have room for a full size piano. Knowing nothing about keyboards, I watched many of your videos to determine which keyboard or piano would be best for me. From your videos, I came to realize the most important features for me, were authentic piano sound and full-size graded, weighted keys. From there it was a question of size and features. My focus was mainly on piano, but I found the keyboard features interesting, especially recording and playback, and USB capability. I finally decided on the Yamaha P121. I told my husband it's like a "cross-over vehicle", a compromise between piano and keyboard, with features of both, in a more manageable size. I purchased one and am excited for it to arrive in a few days. I also bought a Yamaha PSR-E363 for my Aunt. Hers arrived today and she is very excited about it. Thank you for all your help and all your great information. Stay safe!

Just curious: How many piano pieces actually use the few keys on the extreme lower and high register notes of a 88-key piano? Wouldn't 73 or 76 keys be enough for 95% of pieces out there?

In 1988 my dad bought a keyboard that was the equivalent of $2000 in today's money. It had the most realistic acoustic piano voice I had ever heard. When I hear budget keyboards nowadays and entry level digital pianos, I laugh at how terrible that top of the line arranger sounded in comparison.

👍🏽👍🏽This! For any given stage in a device's development - you will get stuff at the 'low' end. But little do we think about it - said 'basic' device would have warranted a price running into many thousands (5-figures even) - just a decade or two ago, & we weren't exactly backward then. The same happens with cameras. Today's 'basic' would have been yesterday's holy grail.

I am practicing on a hand-me down Yamaha E303 (very old keyboard). Do I actually need to get a better keyboard so that eventually I can play the piano as well? Thanks Jeremy.

excellent video. would be nice to know how this new yamaha piano released in 2018 compares to previous generation, like 2014 models of other pianos (even other manufacturers) in terms of realistic key feel, and sound too. the P121 seems like perfect gigging piano for live playing because of light weight, runs on 12V, and small size, if external PA is used for larger sound. it is easily transportable. but salesmen will always claim that only the $1500+ pianos (like new P515 or older korg SV1) are suitable for professional music playing.
@superblondeDotOrg
@superblondeDotOrg 5 жыл бұрын
basically i am saying that this piano is being labelled "BEGINNER Portable Digital Piano" for sales purposes however nothing about it seems beginner to me, it seems perfectly pro, graded weighted action and excellent sound with reverb, especially when compared to the best electric pianos from 2012 (less than 10 years ago),try comparing to an old top of the line privia pro stage piano like PX-3, or compare to the older pro Yamaha P-250 digital stage piano (2004). I believe the answer is that this new $500 P121 sounds better than Yamaha's older pro stage piano P250 or CP300 because "The P250 features 3 levels of Yamaha CFIII Grand piano stereo samples" (back in 2004) and this new P121 has "Pure CF" which includes CFIII plus better reverb. now comparing those, P121 vs CP300, would be a great comparison.
@JeremySee
@JeremySee 5 жыл бұрын
True that. Worst are the salesmen who push the expensive *CP* for gigs. If you need to transport your gear yourself, weight is a big factor. I have gigged with CP & with the entry level P series. On most average PA and in a noisy environment, you can't tell the difference!

Just wanted to point out that the P125 can also be transposed up or down octaves by holding down the Piano button, so the P121 really does not have a wider range. Though I definitely see your point that if you want to purchase the P121 for a lower budget, you are still able to widen the range to further than a standard piano's 88 key range. Love your videos, and thank you for being so thorough in your reviews and demos!

I purchased the P-125. It is beautiful. BUT, I would like consumers to be aware the recommended i-UX1 cable (to use the Smart Pianist app) which is recommended uses the outdated 30-pin technology. So, after purchasing I-UX1 for $79.99, I had to purchase an Apple lightning to 30-pin adapter. Also, the reviews state that Apple will soon be discontinuing this adapter. The 30-pin connection is 7-8 years old. YAMAHA - where is the updated cable? We are in the era of smart phones, ipads and lightning cables. This is my only frustration with the purchase.

Jeremy, I think you said layer when you meant to say split. Your playing brings out the best sounds in this piano. Popular as it is, I think the CF sample is still underrated in reviews. I never get tired of hearing it or having it under my fingers on my P-255. In fact, it just keeps growing on me. That it is available in this inexpensive P-121 piano is marvellous. The P-121 is significantly cheaper than the P-125, and only lacks a few keys/notes. I do agree with the suggestion that this is the best deal for an inexpensive Yamaha portable piano. Do you think that digital manufacturers have markedly different preferences in tuning? Different brands sound so very different to me (in tuning) yet throughout one given range there seems to be consistency. I admit to favouring Yamaha tuning (particularly on the CF samples) because the bass notes are always just where I want them, even when the keyboard stops at 73 keys. (I use all 88 keys on my pianos, but only after many years of playing. I can easily make do with 73.) And it's as though the layers of sound vibrate together with just the right beat for me. So have my ears been reprogrammed by Yamaha? Lol.

Favourite piano variation? For anyone who is still reading these comments: I promise you that you will/would find good uses for at least three of the piano sounds. It all depends on the situation. I thought I would only use the default Concert Grand CF on my Yamaha, but the mellower sound is very good in a smooth ensemble, when I need to be more discrete and avoid percussiveness. The bright piano is invaluable for boogie and pop. If you play improvised music, try splitting the keyboard with bright piano in the left hand and default CF in the right hand. Your walking basslines will stand out, but you can still do full throttle piano solos with no apparent seam between the two piano sounds. That's very helpful when there's no bass player in the band but you don't want to separate your hands too much.

Hi Jeremy great demonstration 👍 I like it very much when you play the instrument you are demonstrating, it gives a far better picture of the possibilities than just demoing the styles (for arrangers), etc. This piano seems very nice even for intermediate players because of its great quality of sounds and high portability. The Line In is a nice feature in this price range to use this as a stage instrument or as a backup instrument. I was wondering if there is any way to adjust the volume of the split/layer voices? Also, can this be used as a MIDI controller or is it just meant for performing? The acoustic harpsichord really sounds nice. Is there also an acoustic clavichord for Baroque music or just the usual electric clavichord for pop music? The light weight of this instrument is just great. My DGX 650 weights 30 kilos and I need some help if I want to move it to another room in the house 😳 Regards 😎

Thanks for your support Vinciane. Yes. Layers and split volumes can be controlled independently. Accompaniment volume also can be controlled. Auto bass can also be turned on and off. The USB port do transmit and receive MIDI. There are 2 Baroque period harpsichord.

Is that the actual sound of the piano through the onboard speakers, or do you have the sound going through an amp?

I heard that if you just want piano experience and not so much features, you should opt to buy kawaii es110. Same price range of p125. But they it has superb key action and response that is the same with acoustic piano.

Fun fact: Yamaha calls the p-515 a "portable", but the manual says you should not move it around without the help of second person! A great piano, but heavy (22 Kg) and bulky. I guess there is a reason for the 121 to exist.

Jeremy, have you tried the p515? Does the key action in p125 feel comfortable? Will the p125 be good in classical etudes? I am going to buy a piano tomorrow but I am in a big confusion between the 515 and 125. I have a feeling that the 515 is a little overpriced. In the same time I want a piano that lasts at least a decade. What do you think? And please do a video about p 515

The P125a with the letter A, transfers only midi data by usb, the traditional P125 transfers audio and midi data by usb, that is the only difference.

What is the best choice- Yamaha P125 or Roland FP30?
@dekzan

Yamaha is the best, louder, also has internal adjustments. I ordered a Kawai ES 110 and a Korg D1, both have a very weak thin nasal sound. Both were returned. I was able to try the P 125 at a store and absolutely loved it. I am a beginner, the keys are lighter and not noisy like the others. I did not try the PF30, but watched many reviews, seems too digital, not as natural as the Yam. If you have the green, buy the Yam P 515. By the way I sold my Kawai ES7, very good instrument in same category as ES 110.
