Yamaha R6 Bad Ignition Coil Symptoms

2003 Yamaha YZF R6
I have a 03 R6 which I believe to have two bad coils in. When I ride around in low RPM's, the bike sounds absolutely terrible. Almost like a v-twin or a dirtbike or something, but definitely not like it should. I have to feather the throttle around to try to get the other cylinders to fire. I'm not 100% sure that the coils are the problem, so I uploaded to see what you guys think. I will, however, be putting newer coils in very soon, so I'll make a follow up video on the results. Mines doing the same. But was down for a good year or so fixing other stuff. Coils ohms were good, new ngks, new fuel pump, cleaned out fuel system(rail, injectors, hoses), going to check ground wiring and wires. 🤦🏻‍♂️ cylinder 2 and 4 aren’t igniting. Swapped plugs...

My 2000 r1 my tps sensor was bad and i put one i tested the resistênçe and the coils are good but the number 1 colector is colder than the rest and i think its because the tps terminals has contact problems

I know my 03 r6 had coil problem and if i recall there were two different ones for like a mid year change and i bought the wrong set the first time. And it ran but worse than original. I just got a 00 r6 today that supposedly has low compression he said. Im gonna mess with it tomorrow and see. Hope its coils lol

check spark plug gap, make sure it is spec!

if failing, you will have inconsistent experiences, and they may not keep up with the higher rpms and seem fine with the lows. i rode on bad coils/harness for 2 years and didnt know. the extra power was greatly appreciated. humidity tends to make the coils with holes misfire leaving white needle point burn marks.

Same happen to my cbr 125 I kept blowing the ecu went through 7 of them then noticed the coil on the harness side one of the wires was damaged so replaced looming lol

My 01 FZ1 is weird. It will turn over then backfire, But never start. I unplugged the relay and the fuel pump actuated, then it did the same thing. I am at a loss. I think I am going to just replace the entire ignition (Module ,coils& plugs)

my r6 is also having this issue, does your bike also smell extremely rich? did your rpms steady after keeping it above 4k rpm? Im a little worried its something more than coils

Dont worry too much mate . It might be coils after all . My spark plugs were all fine apart from cylinder 1 plug which was black / sooty . Swapped aroumd coils 1 and 2 .. now the black sooty plug is cylinder 2 plug . So the problem shifted with the coil position . New coils time 👍ive a 2002 r6 but had blown coils on cars . Same symptoms

Sounds like you had only two cylinders firing there. Bad coils/spark plugs deffo. Glad that you fixed it!

It's the coils it's running on 3 cylinders buy all new coils and it will run fine I guarantee it if it's not the coils it's either wires or plugs

hopefully some one can help me but i have a 2007 Yamaha R6S i got it from a dealer it has 9k miles and they said they put a new battery in it but about 4 days later i got on and road down the block pulled over sent a text left the key in the on position & it wouldn’t start. i was like damn the battery but then a few days later i’m coming to a stop and it died & then again & i revved it at a stop to see if it would stall and sure enough it did. so i’m very confused. my idle is around the same as yours under the 1k mark but it doesn’t hop around, any suggestions ? please and thank you

This sucks on Yamaha bikes! I'v a Warrior xv1700. Called Yamaha garage about something unconnected, they said there was a (old) pickup coil recall, get my bike in as it's a free replacement. Since they'v dun the coil swap bike sounds rough, loads of vibration! They can't see any problem! :/

sounds like coils and the valves. easiest way would be to check the resistance with a multimeter, and compare it with readings in the service manual.

MPR3B 1 is it ignition coil? It happened to me , i just take off the air filter and test it really cough and sputter, i changed new coil , suddenly no problem. It scared me. I was riding on highway , i was thinking i might be fatal on road if the bike continues that problems occurs.

I just bought the same bike and everything and it doing exactly what you’re describing right there I just bought the bike I know nothing about it I found the fuel filter clogged so I thought the fuel pump might be bad so I ordered one but I don’t know I’m sitting here I can ride on the bike just fine but once I give it throttle it falls flat on his face like misfiring I just replaced all of the spark plugs I didn’t think about the coils being bad

No it's not, I have a two cylinder bike and only one cylinder clicks and not the other, I was told that it's a bad coil, after you fix that, you shouldn't have any issues with clicking

Your idle is WAY too low....should be between 1,300-1,500 rpm and your temperature is WAY too high! I have an '04 R6, it never gets over 102-104 degrees when idling....when riding, it is between 80-95 degrees. I replaced the ignition coils and plugs in mine....didn't really need it done but they were original and 15 years old, HUGE difference in performance!! Try "Engine Ice" as a coolant, probably the best on the market to keep engine temp down. Flush engine out with, "distilled water" first though. After doing that, if the idle is still low...check your idle adjustment screw on the right side, located where your knee would rest....turn it clockwise to increase the idle when engine is warm.

Same problem, it jumps on idle and when I get on the throttle it stutters and bogs big time (and sounds like an R3) but the more it warms up the better it gets which tells me it's not the coil and tells me it's the plugs in my bike. I cleaned the plugs and found one was actually loose lol. After I did that it ran great after a quick warm up but now it's doing it again so I'm gonna change the plugs and see if that works. Hopefully I don't have to change the coils. Don't feel like dumping 80-100 bucks in new coils lol

My r6 idle great all cylinders are running but when I Cruze at like 6k or 8 k rpm it kinda sounds like vroom vroom vroom like the revs bounce a lil bit is that normal lol it still has full power

@@caseywilliamsonsr.8275 Yeah I didn't think so either but I changed my tire and put a new chain on and it stopped. The old chain was loose and had spots were it was stiff and it was sliding on the sprocket. I replaced the sprocket to change the gearing as well and after the chain it was fixed. I'm not eaying it's a garuntee for your bike as iv not seen it but for me that's what it was

+MPR3B I'm not the original owner. It's a 2007 r6. I had a hunch the coils were going bad but the water test didn't seem be a clear answer. It idled rough when hot which some say is the coils and yesterday I was on my way home and it just started sounding like crap and had no power down in low rpms. Sounds just like yours did. So I'm hoping to get them out later today and test them. Where did you end up getting coils? I know they recommend oem parts for stuff like this but obviously Yamaha coils arnt cutting it...

+Mitch Denes good news for me, bad news for you...when i opened up my bike, it still had the recalled Denso coils in it. Which made it 100% clear to me that it was in fact the coils. There were fried, clear as day. I'm assuming that anything after 2003 and even some years before, have the mitsubishi's already in. So I don't know why they would go bad, although it is very possible. I got my coils on ebay for $90 versus $300 for new ones. Price is obviously a huge thing for me. I'm a broke college kid so I was willing to take that chance on used ones even though people told me to buy new. If price is no option for you, go get new ones from the dealer and have them put them in. If price is, try scooping up some on ebay and take the chance. You can always resell them. Is your battery good? Air filter okay? Spark plugs good? If so, it's gotta be the coils. But my situation wasn't the exact same as yours, so I can't give a fool proof answer. If you find everything i just said to be okay, then think electrical and try the voltage regulator or rectifier or whatever it's called, but I highly doubt that's it. Check everything else first. Keep me updated!

+MPR3B I tore into it tonight. I had spark plugs and changed them. They all looked pretty good. Not sure of the last time they were changed but fresh ones are in. All of my coils tested about the same with the primary being 1.7. With a max tolerance of 1.6. So it might be a combination. All the symptoms point to coils and the bike runs rough once warmed up. People have claimed they won't fall out of spec until hot. Who knows. I'm also on a budget but found some decent ones on eBay I'm going to try for just under $100. Come with a warranty. Everything looks fine thus far. So hoping to just get new coils and fix it all. I plan on posting a video of it here in the upcoming days of your interested. Thanks for all the info and ideas man.!

+Mitch Denes I've heard that as well that they test different when heated. I've heard to put them in the oven lol. But I don't have a voltmeter so I didn't even bother testing when i got mine. Most guys will stand behind their stuff that they sell, so if they don't work, I'm sure the seller will try helping you out. I think there's a pretty good chance that it's just your coils. I will definitely check out your vid. And for the info, no problem. I bought the bike with little to no knowledge of bikes and engines. Ended up dumping it and fucking a lot of things up. Didn't have the money to pay someone to fix it, so I was forced to learn a lot real quick. Still continuing to learn. But yea, get that vid up, and get them new coils in. Also, when i told my mechanic (local guy, not dealership), he thought it might have been the wiring harness for the coils. I think he was trying to save me money.

CrewOcd i have an 2006 r6 and ive got the same problem. Cylinder number 4 isn't working. Changed the spark plugs, coils and the wiring harness. No results. Went into diag mode did full diag no errors except for 36 which mean open circuit on cylinder 4 ignition. Tried to clear codes. No results. Went back to diag mode selected Co (air fuel mixture settings per cylinder) played with the settings and set them all to - 70 and bike started to sound better after 2.5-3K rpms but check engine light is still on. 2.5K rpms and lower bike sounds like a fucking tractor and I'm losing my mind. Already spent 500$ and 8days on it with no luck. I'm from Sydney, Australia and everything is expensive as fuck here help 😭😭😭
