0w30 Yamaha snowmobile oil is better then 0w40 that’s full synthetic?

I could not speak to which is better. I am basing my opinion off of the Yamaha recommendations.

So quick question. You don't have to start the machine at all since it's a dry sump set up? You can just check it when it's cold?

Yes that is correct as long as the system is filled from a new oil change. Check it cold not running.
