Great review. I have the 3070 and confirm every thing you said. I had five yamahas since I was 22 years old and now I am 66. They last awhile. I had a sony in between but I had yamaha all my life. This one I have makes my power hungry Mirages sing

Thank you for a wonderfully balanced review.I eagerly await the arrival of the 2080 model after my RX-A 3000 died after 10 years of sterling service.Always been with Yamaha from the mid 90's and love the sound.Cant wait to crank up the 2080 when it gets here with Midway in Atmos and Master and Commander as well.In Australia there is a dearth of units and the new RX-A 2 to 8 A's have a few months waiting period on them.Glad I could nail one of the last 2080's under the circumstances. Great review! I also have the Yamaha Aventage rx A1080 and love it. I've had it a year and we've thoroughly enjoyed. My problem is, I realized that I sold myself short and now want Dolby atmos 7.2.4 or at least 7.1.4. So as of this video I ordered the rx- a1080's big brother the Yamaha rx-a3080. With 9.2 channels and 11.2 channel processing capability I cannot wait to get this thing. Plus it has little more wattage for 2 speakers at max output it's rated 150 watts vs the rx-a1080 rated 110 watts.

Thank you for the wonderful review I just bought one of these rxa1080 receivers for $600 brand new in the box from Craigslist locally and I love it still learning all the ins and outs I'm coming from a sixteen-year-old flagship Pioneer vsx 59 TX which was a t HX Ultra certified unit so the infection was one of the best you can buy for a commercial audio-video receiver but it had no digital HDMI connections because it was like about 17 years old just a great amp section and preamp section however this Yamaha actually sounds better with the AI engage than anything I experienced before and that Pioneer was no slouch either let me tell you

I just got one of these, replacing a old marantz 1402 I've had for a decade. Strong all around, the one thing I wish it had that the old one did was more granular control of the subwoofer crossover. Also on the marantz you could set where the speakers dropped off, and also adjust how high the subwoofer goes. So you could build in an overlap, instead of just a single crossover transition point. But overall everything else was an upgrade.

I have the 1070 version and as great as I think it is I am always seriously annoyed by the sheer lack of volume unless turned up to ridiculous levels.If I set my old DSPA1's volume control to around the quarter too point then its very loud up around the half way point and it is leave the room loud why is the 1070 so much lower even when wacked all the way round to say -20db it still isn't as loud as the dspa1. Anyone else have similar issues?

Hi please help. Nice video. I too have been hooked on home cinema for years. My old one was a Kenwood! I just connected my Yamaha 271 to my blueray with optic and have set my player to dts. My problem is I cant see confirmation of dts on my AV?

Thanks for your great review. In the video I saw the display showed the texts "Atmos/DTHD". Is it only when the input is a Blu Ray player? I asked because I've never seen such texts when I stream Atmos contents, such as from Apple TV or Nvidia Shield Pro TV. As such, I don't know if my A1080 decoded Atmos correctly. Appreciate your advice.

The issue you had with the denon not being able to get the dialog correct is the same issue I had with a denon and onkyo avr. I'm gonna get a yamaha.

HI Anand. I've never tried mini DSP but I'm sure it would add a lot more functions to tweak the sound to your taste. The Yamaha receiver only offers minimum options to tweak the sound manually. You can set crossover for each speaker and adjust levels and other basic functions.

I just got this receiver , when playing Dolby Atmos content don’t see it light up in the front display of the receiver!! ☹️ I go in the settings of the receiver and it tells me it’s playing Dolby Atmos but won’t show In the front display .

Try this. On the front panel of the receiver behind the panel that opens, push the button that says "info". It should now display Dolby Atmos.

@@sidsreviews1110 still trying to figure out how many speakers 🔊 I can hook up and play at the same time , don’t understand the Extra SP 1 Front F presence ?? I have it at 7.1 but I don’t hear 👂 anything from those Extra SP 1 Front Presence .. I only hear them when I change my setting to 5.1 . I’m starting to think 🤔 that those channels don’t work in a 7.1 setting ☹️

@@ccheg.v.6407 There are only 7 amps in the receiver so you will only hear 7 speakers at one time. For Dolby Atmos 7.1 you need to hook the Atmos speakers up to to the Front Presence speaker terminals then select either front height or overhead in the speaker settings.

I just purchased this one. They setup the audio SURROUND AI. I can hear my rear spk putting out audio. If I put my ear close to the spkr, I can just barely hear sound. My old Yamaha RX-V 2095 from 1999 was still working just wanted to step up to a newer one. Any suggestions? any videos on how all the controls work?

What did you go with? I went with a 2080 and I do love it, still tweaking. I think getting the powered subwoofer to sound its best takes the most time.

I’ve had this for over a year but recently it’s playing up and won’t connect to my foxtel or ps4 when I switch between the two there’s so sound or video, I keep getting the message up the top saying my hdmi is not supported in the arc it doesn’t make sense I havnt changed any wiring since buying it can someone help

@@varoluygun4166 Hi Varol. The TV settings has no effect on what sound you will get from any of these receiver units. If you want to know what brand sounds better, that I can't tell you. I have not tried Bose of Harmon Kardon. The Yamaha receiver I reviewed here sounds great to me but I can't tell you about other units I have not tried.

Hi Dale, Great review. I was wondering your thoughts on the Surround:AI feature of the unit. Online I see various opinions from it being more of a gimmick, to it actually works very well. I also noticed that the newer Aventages no longer seem to have Surround:AI. I wonder if this feature didn't work well as a selling point and they decided to drop it in their new line-up; though, I hope that feature continues to work for those who already purchased these units, and that they continue to update it.

I actually use AI on my new RX-a4a and the new higher models include this feature. Only the lowest model doesn’t the a2a.

How is the subwoofer and rear surround outputs? I have the 880 and listening to 2 channel television, I barely had any sound coming out of the rears even after pumping them up to +8. And the subwoofer, had a very weak output until I brought that up to at least +5. I’m assuming it was deffective and I did return it. I’ve always had Yamaha‘s and I went Denon and I am not happy with that. Just wondering if the subwoofer output being weak is common on the Yamaha.

Hi Michael. Both the subwoofer and surrounds are fine on this unit. As I said in the video, I do increase the volume trim on all my speakers and subwoofer to +5 because I like the extra headroom. I'm not sure what your speaker sensitivities are or your subwoofer output wattage, but from my own experience living with this unit for a while, it is good after running the YPAO calibration. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was running Polk rti-a7 and now I have Emotiva t1+. My local Best Buy has his receiver available for 1199. I just don’t know how much different it would be from the 880 that I returned recently. I agree with you thinking that the music definitely sounds better on the Yamaha than the Denon . I just wish I gave it a little bit more time and I am also running an Emotiva amplifier as well so the power rating isn’t a huge concern. These Emotiva are 4 ohm speakers so I’m sure they’re going to be a little harder to drive but I just love the aesthetics and the set up and the features on that Yamaha I just may pull the trigger before they are sold out. I know the new ones probably be way more expensive with 8K and 4K 120 features which I don’t need anytime soon.

I have my aventage 1080 in back up its a amazing receiver the build quality is top notch, i recently move to the denon x3700h to use in preamp mode for all 11 channels, this is where the new line of Denon shine is be able to use it in preamp mode without needed to buy a processor. This was day and night for me as i am using emotivas external ampliification and of course the 1080 only have 7 channels but i must say i prefer the build and look of the yamaha over the Denon. Audessey xt32 is also a big step up over yapao room calibration. But for a stand alone receiver regular use ill go yamaha hand down

Those Yamaha AVENTAGE RXA-80 Series AV Receivers are simply "The Last Mohican"s of a 134yrs old brand. They are the Top-Notch AVRs ever manufactured by YAMAHA both in beauty & performance. The new face lifted, ugly and cheaped-out design was a huge mistake and Yamaha will understand but will be paying the price for that lesson. - Anyway just buy the AVENTAGE RXA-80 Series AVRs if you can find one... Their value will go mad as soon as people realize the differences between these and the "new" ones !

The upper end RX-a4a, a6a, and big daddy a8a are actually built with the same higher quality of the now older 80 series. The improved power supply alone is worth it. Plus Yamaha has improved the audio configuration YPAO has fixed the bass and some of the issues of older units.

the remote looks like your average size remote to me. underwhelming if anything. not a lot of buttons. does nobody remember the "learning remote controls" that came with receivers in the '90s that had like 100 buttons and were huge?
