Neither the oil level window or the filler cap were where I imagined them to be. I was searching much lower down on the bike. Thanks for the demo/tutorial. Very clear and so very helpful!

I must say after 12 years of VFR ownership with no need to top up oil level, not once, this TDM has a very healthy thirst for oil. I cannot see us last that long. Shame though, because it is very comfortable and causes me no pain over long distance, which is why I had to part with my VFR. I guess something has to give. Such is life.

Thanks for the video, i own a trx and its a dry sump. Is the tdm 850 also dry sump? They told me too ride the bike for 10 minutes instead of let it idle for a few minites ? What is your view on this ?

good that at least oil change is not complicated ...the same cant be said of other maintanence work on this bike

Absolutely true. I have switch to BMW as it is far easier to maintain and more reliable on the wet.

Thank you so much for this great video. I did my first oil change today for my 4TX '99, and it went well, although my final oil level seems to be low, as the small glass window is still emtpy after I poured 3,6L into the engine. So I took more oil into and still the glass window is empty. What could be the reason for that?

are you a mechanic or all the bikes on your videos are yours? I have been watching your videos and I enjoy them. I have been thinking to buy the BMW 1200gs but haven't make the decision yet, called the dealer today and they told me that those bikes needs a valve adjustment every 6k miles because the 08 are oil cooled. I am not a mechanic but always work on my own motorcycles, currently I have 3 bikes, all Yamaha 2 Road star and Xsr900, the BMW looks intimidating for me as far as maintenance don't know why. well keep the videos coming.

I am not a mechanic but I enjoy looking after my bikes. As for the GS it all depends what you want to do with it. It is a big and heavy machine and excellent for long touring trips. Very pleasant to ride on & off road. You can do the basic maintenance yourself as I do it in my videos.

Trust me on this one, if your TDM, TRX or any of Yamaha's bikes with that exact 850 engine has a lot of miles, (example mine has 75k kilometers), I put much denser 15w-50 full synthetic oil in it, to fill up on all the nooks and crevices of the worked out (not worn out) cylinders. Much much better performance and less oil being eaten. My engine ate 1dl of oil every 1000km, because I was putting 10w-40, believe me buy and give your engine 15w-50 and you wont regret it. You have 2 drain bolts one on the left and one on the right + the oil filter.

As long as you haven't got any oil leaks anywhere, a litre per 1500kms is not outrageous.

Hey lads did me first ever oil change yesterday tdm. All went well were drained oil put in filter check that little bolt oil seeping came out today and bit oil on floor think just need tighten. Like a twist though never followed order of bolt removal I was rushing by then for the oil filter case can I take the filter housing bolts out reinstall with out all oil pissing out just the different size bolts not the one you undo with alley key

Hi, I need to do it as well... this time on my own! :) 1. To measure Nm you need a torque wrench ("chiave dinamometrica" in Italian). Set desired torque (in Nm) on this tools, tighten the bolt until you hear a "click" from the head of the wrench (i.e. desired torque has just been reached), then stop immediately. 2. Not sure if you mean the orange funnel ("imbuto") seen on top-right part of video frame. That looks very handy for the job! 3. I'm not a mechanic, but I've told to always change gasket (of drain bolt) and o-rings (inside the oil-filter cover too, as seen at 5:20) every time I change oil and oil filter... just my 2c. To all: on this topic, I've understood the proper oil filter for TDM 4TX is #145 (different brands share this code). What about those two o-rings and drain bolt/plug + its gasket? Does anyone knows their sizes/specifications, so I could look for them on internet? Thanks in advance!

it's a super versatile bike. i ride everyday. 60 km, house-work, and during weekend for little travels. i have done 5k km in 2 and half months. no problem at all (before i had a Pegaso Aprilia 650 (monocylinder) and a Fz6 Fazer 600 (4 in line). this 2 cyclinder is a beast n montain road and low consumes on travel.. (110/120 on highway for long trip)
