It is a 2 stroke. The separate oil reservoir is for the oil injection. The oil cap you removed is the transmission oil. "Torque Iduction" is Yamatalk for reed valves. These bikes were fairly easy to work on. Good luck 😁

That's a 1973 Yamaha DT-3. Great motorcycles. I worked at the local Yamaha shop when I was 14 to 16 years old. So I worked on those when they were new. It won't be hard to fix. Yamaha started touting their "Torque Induction" when they put reed valves in their Enduro motorcycle engines in 1972. From 1972 to 1973 the only thing they changed really was the paint.

It was indeed a cool job. At the ripe old age of 15, I was one of the first 18 people in Arkansas to be authorized by Yamaha to work on the shock of the first monoshock YZs.

Nicely done dw6. It sounds like the way I remember, I don't think there's an exhaust leak. The kids removed the factory baffle. You should have an oil line to the carb.

The fuel oil mix tank I'm sure will see when you pull of the side cover, mid upper. The second plug in the head is where a compression release goes. From the factory is a steel plug. Won't run without a battery. I had the identical bike, 250 enduring.

Great video that is the choke lever it cut off a circuit not like a normal choke I always let the bike mix its own oil some completely get rid of that and mix it there selves they don't trust by the way those mix pumps are adjustable but definitely research it love the video

I found you and Mustie1 about the same time if memory serves. He is phenomenal when it comes to just about everything he attempts--a lot like you and Sixty-five Ford. I love his long videos, but I have the time to watch them start to finish and I know a lot of guys can't do that without breaking it up. It's definitely worth the effort in my opinion. I had a 350 Yamaha for a few months back in the early 70s, and it was a torque monster. Sadly, that's about all I can remember about the bike. This little 250 is going to be a blast for those kids as soon as you work out the rough edges.

I'm glad you got it figured out. I had the 175cc version of this as a kid and it was the first motor I rebuilt on my own when I was 14. The first thing that I did was disable the oil pump for the two stroke. I mixed my oil and gas. The pumps had a reputation for not being reliable so if/when the quit (and there was no warning light) you would toast the engine running straight gas. Other than that, they are stone simple. Good video though.

That is the choke port. Maqueny calls it a fuel enrichner it just opens up another passage for more fuel.

DW6...the "2nd sparkplug" is actually provisions for compression release. If the assembly was intact there would be knurled cap with a pull cable (about the size of a bicycle brake cable & sheath) and a coil spring under it, with a threaded insert that goes into the head (where the 2nd plug is now). The cable would have run up to the handle bars and be attached to a small brake/clutch style lever. They were all the rage in the 70's for racers (and wannabe's)...used them as an engine brake of sorts, but they were also used when kicking over Big Bore 2 strokes.

hey thanks for the shout out and a great video, looks like others answered your questions, that fuel filter might cause it to starve for gas at speed, those are used for stuff that has a fuel pump, let me know if the owner wants to trade for a honda cb 350,
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mustie, I'm thrilled you found this video, but curious how you found it. Small World After All. I am aware of the the fuel filter and that it should be used with a fuel pump ( I learned it from one of your videos:) I knew it had that same style fuel filter, so I put the same thing on. There is a slight fuel problem where it is starving for fuel, so we are going to pull the fuel filter out and switch it with a typical screen filter. I also replaced the fuel petcock and it has a screen built into it. About the trade, don't you live in ME it is going to be difficult to work out. That rust colored bike you have is looking pretty nice though. Thanks again for commenting, and as I said before you are a master and have a great channel. Bob

Finished watching the video...the high mounted oil tank with the sight glass is the 2-stroke oil reservoir for what Yamaha refers to as "AutoLube"...this system mixes the correct amount of 2-stroke oil into the carb based on RPM. (least at idle, most at WOT.)..."AutoLube" system eliminates the need to pre-mix the gas & oil in the main fuel tank. The supply line from the lube tank runs into the engine case and is connected to an engine driven pump with variable output dependent on throttle position. If you follow the throttle cable from the twist grip down toward the carb you will notice that there is a junction where it splits into TWO cables...one continues to the carb, the other into the case and onto the oil injection pump. The system can be disabled, requiring the need to use only PRE-MIXED in the main tank, but if you can ensure that it is working, I would keep it, as it provides consistent lube oil to meet engine demands while reducing spark plug fouling and carbon build up in the exhaust pipe. It's been 40 years since I worked on those bikes as a junior wannabe. P.S. The "Torque Induction" moniker was Yamaha's name for reed valve induction beginning in 1972-73?

The lever on the side of the carb is exactly as you stated - the choke lever. As you are sitting on the bike, the right side small triangular cover (just in front of the oil dipstick) is for the oil injection pump. Your throttle cable will have 1 line from the throttle grip that will go into a small round "tube" and then it will have 2 cables coming out the other side. 1 of those cables goes to the carb and the other goes to the oil injection pump. I know that the 2 stroke oil goes from that tank on the left side down to the injection pump. From there I forget (it's been about 30 years since I had a DT) if it goes from the injection pump back to the carb or if it injects the oil in the reed valve area. When you have the cover off you should be able to follow the lines. With the empty tank and oil line apparently removed, I'm betting they just stopped using the oil injection. Most of us would trust it until it gave problems or disposed of a set of rings, then we went to pre-mix. I know the purists hate that idea and claim it's a good system but when you're young and just want to go dirt biking, the last thing you want is bike down time and the last thing you can afford is a bore and re-ring kit. Just a much more sure way of knowing your bore is lubricated. I loved the sound on that one as it brought back memories of the "thunder clappers". That one like most appears to have the muffler baffles removed and definitely has the silencer removed. Good bike in GREAT shape - I envy you because I almost NEVER find anything in that vintage with that clean of a carb. One trick I use for the tanks is to put a bunch of small nuts in there with gas and give it the shake-up until everything is clean. Good luck with it

ok's just a heads up on the battery, that bike has a generator and magneto set up, the battery does nothing but make the lights steady at low rpm and is really not needed other than for that as the spark is from the magneto. anyways nice video.

Okay thanks, can't the battery be used to start the engine?
@onlyoneschizm
@onlyoneschizm 7 жыл бұрын
there's no starter in that motor and that's only a 4.5 volt battery low amp [ less than a lawnmowers ] and since it's got a magneto and generator it really needs no battery ...... it's set up like most mopeds are as they use the same style battery. if it does have a starter in it then that's the wrong battery for it.

Hey Bob, Great video! I love trying new things, it was fun to watch you do the same. Two questions here: why the 2 floats in that carb? (I don't know anything about motorcycles) Also, why is the 'varnish' from the old gas in the tank so bad? what effect does that have on the rest of the fuel system?
@onlyoneschizm
@onlyoneschizm 7 жыл бұрын
two floats is so the carb does not flood out in a hard cornering as one float would work the needle valve while cornering.

Most people don't and didn't trust the auto oiler on there 2 stroke bikes so they mixed there own gas 32:1. Allot of people did away with the auto oiler feeding the engine and turned it into an auto chain oiler.
