Brilliant and well detailed video. I checked the kill switch and have nothing on the ignition when turning the key. Living in Ireland but where would you get a 10 pin key starter. Need to isolate the issue but head wrecking as well. Video is great and informative. Thanks again 👏👏👍

Hello Ted, you’re about the only guy that I trust to ask on the entire Internet on KZbin. I have a 1989 90 HP Yamaha ETLF. 2 stroke. It has been sitting for almost a year because I hook the battery up backwards, and now my multi Gage is reading off an erratic when I move my tilt trim up and down seems to only be tilt trim that is erratic and incorrect, but I never turned the engine over. I just turned the switch on when the battery was hooked up backwards, so the engine wasn’t cranked over with the battery backwards. I once I realized what was going on. I turned the key switch off. I haven’t tried to crank it since then, because I’ve heard nightmares on how I could’ve ruined something in the charging system if I ran the motor with the rectifier bad after hooking up the battery backwards my question to you is what would have been the main things ruined when I hooked up the battery backwards? The only thing that seems to show signs without me cranking the engine is the tilt trim meter not reading where the motor actually is up or down. Before all of this the engine ran like a top so I don’t wanna crank it over and ruin anything. I’m very mechanically inclined with cars, and I’ve been learning about outboard’s for the past three or four years any help would be much obliged thank you and God bless you.

Great video. I have a 17' Boston Whaler with the identical outboard - 2004 90HP Yamaha 2 stroke. Started boat prior to launching with no issues. Towed to VA from NJ and at launch, turn ignition key and get nothing - no click, just silence. Put power directly to starter and it cranks. Used remote start (push button as you refer to it) to bypass starter relay/solenoid and with the key in on position, the engine starts and runs fine. Replaced starter relay with a brand new relay, carefully re-assembled and have the same issue - nothing at turn of key. I figured that it would not be the ignition switch since the engine runs fine with key in on position and after being started with the push button. I did not pull apart the wiring harness. I can do that, as you demonstrate, to isolate the ignition switch. When I get it open, which two leads do I connect the push button starter to? How do I test the neutral safety switch that sits behind the gear rods? Thanks in advance

Try holding the key in the crank position and shifting the shift handle from nuetral to forward and then back through neutral into reverse And back to nuetral. This works the nss through its on/off position. If no change then unplug the engine harness and check continuity through the key switch (r/pu) to (y/r) while holding the key in the crank position. If no continuity its the key sw or nss in the control box .

Greta info! I have a 2006 Yamaha VMAX HPDI 200 outboard on a 2004 G3 HP200DC, and I’m planning to re-wire my boat this winter…my console switches are the crappy membrane type and don’t work and there’s a ridiculous amount of old Molex type connectors/wiring harnesses, etc in my boat that are causing a lot of intermittent problems. I’m going to do a complete re-do on all the electrical on this boat including new wiring, fuse blocks, gauges, console switches, etc. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this engine showing pin-outs/wire colors for starter, kill, trim/tilt, tach, etc? Any help is greatly appreciated!

would have been good to see you do what is actually the most difficult part. Anyone else ready to slit their wrists just trying to get that shit design harness connection apart? Mine is right next to steering and then lasso down exactly where I need to put my hand around it. I would rather they have made you have a special too. They couldn't have at least put some grippier text on the two outsides?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the first time I saw this It took me several minutes to figure out how to get it apart. That's good old engineer's designing something without ever having to work on it!!
