@SmallBikeStuff check the jetting on that bike it is the main jet by the sounds of it , it is oversized and when you open the throttle fully it floods and the engine has a weak combustion reducing power , don't go too small on jetting size or it will burn lean and eventually seize

I had a Yamaha FDHJ or some such (we called it Yamaha SS) in 1977. 49cc and restricted to 40Km/h through air-intake and carburetor. New exhaust, air-intake and sprayhead in the carb made it go 75-80Km/h, depending on the rear sprocket. I had a smaller one and went 85Km/h. To go faster you needed a new cylinder with 5 wash-holes instead of the standard three. After that I had a Yamaha RD50 50cc/7HP which was considered a motorcycle (49cc was considered a moped and didn't need a driver's license and can be driven at 16, motorcycles at 18). The RD went 135Km/h stock. Too many 16-year olds got caught and the RD model was replaced with the RDM50 which was 49cc instead of 50cc. From there I went to a Honda 750 Four. That was a bit of a change. I may have some of the technical terms wrong as I translated off the cuff from Flemish. Cheerio. Greetings from Belgium. Zealand in Holland was once Belgian territory, so hey, we might be related.

What a great vehicular journey. I always enjoy learning small country specific rules or regulations that end up determining the bikes available in their market. Thanks for watching!

@@SmallBikeStuffI had a lot of other 49cc "mopeds". Flandria (Belgian defunct brand) and Zundapp (models with the gear-shift at the handlebar) but they were not "official" as not insured and were used to do some cross in the woods. A guy in our village was the mechanic for a famous world champion motorcross, Joel Robert and later for Roger Decoster, and he carved-out a small circuit in the local woods for test driving Robert's cross machines. Local kids often went there to have fun, even with bicycles. I also have had a Maico 500cc cross machine, but that was a short-lived love affair. Too many engine problems I couldn't afford to repair.

The engine is not actually a Yamaha design, it is a moto minarelli. These engines were installed by a few different bike manufacturers over the years because they are pretty decent and put out upto about 8hp or more when not restricted. Yamaha may have restricted it electronically , however some of these had mechanical restrictions that are easily removed. There might be a reducing ring in the expansion chamber and a plastic wedge in the reed block. Look at the 4 bolts that attach the intake manifold and reed block to the crankcase, if one of them is a shear bolt then it almost certainly has the plastic wedge restriction. Remove the expansion chamber and look down the open end closest to the cylinder, you should see the ring and be able to lever it or grind/drill it out.....
@GPRracing5211 ай бұрын
No these engines are made by yamaha in japan. the minarelli AM6 engines are copies of the yamaha engines. Yamaha owned minarelli in the 90s.
@vincenthawke304911 ай бұрын
@@GPRracing52 have to say that I didn't know Yamaha now owns minarelli, from 2002 it seems. This engine was around before that so was a minarelli design. Only ever saw these in makes like Reiju, Aprillia, Derbi and others that I can't remember now until the little tzr appeared. All the ones I worked on back then were all stamped minarelli not Yamaha, even the tzr was stamped minarelli inside, just Yamaha emblems on the mag and clutch cover on the tzr.. Definitely not designed by Yamaha.
@TT.Hell.11 ай бұрын
@@GPRracing52 I have no knowledge but I heard many times the AM6 was originally designed by Yamaha. I remember Yamaha DT50 had this engine in the ninties. Doesnt matter really who made it first, its a good engine and so widespread that parts and knowledge is never an issue. Would like to try one myself one day but I love scooters. But nothing is impossible with weld and angle grinder :D
@Armadacon11 ай бұрын
@@GPRracing52 As I understand it (I've owned an Aprilia RS50, so I did some background research). There's was a tie-up between Moto Minarelli and Yamaha. Minarelli sold the AM6 engine to Yamaha, for use in the TZR50, while Yamaha sold the TZR125 engine for the use in the likes of the Aprillia RS125. An interesting side point as regards the 125 engine. In the UK model of the TZR125. The power valve was non functional. As the engine was bought (as an after market item) by the likes of Aprillia. It came with a fully functional power valve. Only the fuse in the tail section was removed for Legal reasons.

I've got a 2005 aprilia RS 50, same AM6 engines as the later model of these, if I recall. With a basic head/barrel/piston/carb kit and an arrow exhaust. It hits the power at 7,000rpm and revs through to 12 grand and it'll do 71mph flat out. The more expensive 70 kits and a bit of porting work will make them go even quicker. The 90s and 2000s were an amazing time for the small engines 2 strokes. Fantastic looking, sounding and smelling race replica bikes. The TZR 50 is no exception. She's a beauty!

You should try the Honda NS-1 50 (there is also a NS-1 75cc version) I think that's the direct competition of the TZR-50 on the Japanese market. Looks clean and nice, nevermind the repair on the fairings as long as the engine is running well.

My mate had this model back in 1997, I had the NS-1 50. The TZR was a hair quicker. We had to derestrict both bikes, the TZR has a speedo triggered speed restriction, if you try to bypass by say removing the speedo cable, then it restricts at 8,000rpms or thereabouts. We ended up fitting a switch to the wiring so you road the bike 10 feet or so then turned it off. If the one in the video is cutting out at 8000rpms in all gears, it makes me think the restriction wiring to the speedo it not connected as it should rev to 11 / 12k in the first few gears then gradually restrict so the top speed is never over 60kph. The NS-1 was gearbox restricted so you just make it think it is in neutral all the time or a low gear. I currently have a few of the 75cc versions, I put up 2 videos on my channel.

I rode that thing everywhere for over 2yrs, it was left for strictly street duty(of course legally 😅🤣) when I picked up my 84 CR250R and started riding that on dirt and trails as I couldn't keep up with my older friends who all had 125 or 250cc dirt bikes and one had an LT500 Quadzilla and such, so I needed something faster lol....mine had a bunch of work done to it, nothing was stock, and I was then faster than absolutely all my friends and nobody wanted to ride my bike because they were all afraid of it 🤣 I'm 42 now, shame I sold all the cool bikes and quads I owned throughout the years. 😖

Here's the same engine with no limiter! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnvaf5uked-Bracsi=k_Fj3gJeomyhMsom
@sidecarbod1441Ай бұрын
The way that engine has been restricted is super annoying, Yamaha have not made a cylinder with the correct port timing to only allow the engine to rev to 8K which means there is a huge mis-match between what the port timing of the cylinder wants the engine to do and what the ignition timing of the engine will allow. In 1982 when I was 16 I had a Honda MT5, it was restricted but at least it was rideable, Honda had 'balanced' all of the components of the engine to only allow it to make 2.5 BHP. 3 years ago I purchased a basket case of a Honda MT5 as a project, I decided I was going to turn it into the MT5 that I wished I had when I was 16, I have a lot more knowledge on 2 smokers now so I spent many hours porting the cylinder along with many other mods such as re-profiling the head so that it has a working squish band and a decent compression ratio. It runs a bigger carb, modified exhaust (looks stock but is a 'proper' expansion chamber hidden inside the stock pipe). It runs a Ignitech programable ignition system. I've also replaced the stock 5 speed gear cluster with a 6 speed cluster from a MTX80. The stock engine runs to about 7k with no powerband to speak of, mine starts making power at 7k, peak power is at 8.5k and the engine will rev to 9k RPM. The 6 speed box helps keep the engine in the powerband. I'm a lot heavier now compared to when I was 16 but the bike pulls very well, it does an easy 55+ MPH on the flat, (90KPH) the bike looks factory fresh but is a wolf in sheep's clothing! (Well maybe an angry poodle in sheep's clothing!)

Here in the US, people stick 50cc motors on actual bicycles with a centrifugal clutch and no gearbox and they perform better than this. I have seen them doing 45mph or more (75km/h). This is more like a child's toy, something I could have ridden when I was 4 years old. But there are certainly ways to fix this bike and get some actual speed out of it. Should be able to get 60-70mph out of a bike like this. My first ride was on a TZ125. I've never ridden anything smaller and have a '05 Harley Dyna (with the small motor, lol) and an '82 VF750S that needs a lot of work. I'm thinking of building a custom 2 stroke bike with a "big" Rotax 582 motor.

For who and which market are these intended for? In Europe we have 50cc restricted to 45 km/h for young drivers with no real motorcycle license. Unrestricted it would demand 18yo and motorcucle license, and if you got that you dont want a 50cc because you can drive a bigger bike. I guess rules are different depending on country but usually there is no huge difference. And that rev limiter was a real fun killer, it would be better with a speed based limiter which I guess was not common back in 1990, but now most restricted wehicles has it. Btw the other bike you showed looked like an FS-1 which they were named in Europe but with a AM6 engine?

This bike was made for the Japanese market and was later imported to New Zealand as a used bike. The other bike shown was a Yamaha RZ50, which was featured in the video before this and is unrestricted: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnvaf5uked-Bracsi=GqenUvTf3d8ld3Q3
