I'm on my second Vmax. My first was a 2005 20th anniversary that I wish I never sold. My current one is a 2014. While I understand the need for some to "personalize and make it your own", I've never felt that urge for either Vmax. Both stayed completely stock with no mods and every time I look(ed) at it, I marveled at its beauty. To each his own I guess.

I get your purist attitude towards this machine, I have a Raven Black also. When I first got it, a good buddy of mine said there nothing to mod on this thing! I agreed to a point. The way I see it, the designer has a vision which didn't include road legal requirements as in the huge cheap plastic stock turn signals found on every Yamaha bike and scooter. Nor the generic stock mirrors in production since 1995 or whenever. Or even the protruding mud guard /plate holder. My point is these items were taken from the parts bin and slapped on to save some cost and get the government off their back clearly after the designer did his job. The fit and finish or design of these add ons don't hold up to the rest of the bike. To be fair they at least gave it a shot on the tail extension. I replaced the mirrors with tighter black billet, the indicators are also smaller black billet with extremely bright sequential smd led's and a black billet tail tidy plate frame. Oh, and a small tank protector, because you know, scratches. I'm looking at the bike now and not the bike + appendages. Part of the fun is also researching and installing. Of course YMMV.

Triumph Lover I do agree with you on a lot of what you’re saying. My bike has nearly 4,000 miles since August and the gas tank that’s not really a tank is already getting scuffed up. I definitely need a tank protector. The earlier model 1700 has some very nice polished parts that I wouldn’t mind transferring to mine someday. Obviously Yamaha had to keep the shiny stuff down to keep the price unchanged for what I’m thinking was 3 years, just don’t quote me on that . As far as the machine I absolutely love riding the VMax. Got 2 decent rides in this week and both were tank burners. The only problem was the 50 mph gusts with 40 degree temperatures. I ordered a windscreen this evening. Hoping it helps some.

@@JeffMarcum Jeff, on my 05 soon after purchase, I realized I wanted to sit lower into the MAX so I attained the UFO Gun Fighter seat, which was a reworked stock seat,,Morley does this also, it dropped me a full inch PLUS, and very comfy and improved my handling of the MAX, and I think this accounts to the fact that today there are no scuffs on my red fake tank cover and even have the original stickers from the factory. I was once told by a female VMAX Gen 2 owner that in Europe Yama made a factory lowered seat for MAX!

I agree with you Jeff. VMAX 1700s don’t need modifying in order not to look like any other VMAX. The reason? Well I have owned my VMAX for nearly 3 years now and have never once come across another, they’re so rare! And let’s face it, most of the aftermarket mods are expensive and yet look cheap and tacky. The only decent mod I can think of would be fitting a larger fuel tank. But then the 90 mile range of the VMAX is enough for me. Only thing I did do was trying to relocate the pillion foot pegs as my wife finds the current set up uncomfortable. But all in all, I think the VMAX is one of the few bikes that holds it’s own ground without the need for add-ons.

I have a 2016 I bought new. Got about 14k on it now. And I agree the only mod I've ever considered was the bigger fuel tank. There are many benefits to reflashing the ECU. You might net a few more hp up top but the real gains are in the smoothness of the power delivery, on/off throttle response, constant throttle abruptness etc. It's all about getting 13.2 af ratio (most Euro 3 and newer bikes can't do it stock).

I totally agree with you. I have a 2009 which I bought new in 2009. It is completely stock. I like the look of the stock exhaust system better than any of the after-market ones I have seen. The best reason for removing the catalytic converter is the 25-pound weight reduction but, aside from the dubious legality, would you really notice that? I think not. That weight is on the very bottom of the bike. I'm sure we could get a little more power with an after-market exhaust system and a flash but is it worth it? I very seldom use all of the stock power of the bike. Besides, most of them are way too loud for my taste. With regard to removing the passenger seat, do they realize there is a gaping hole under that seat? That hole would have to covered with something. I have no idea why anyone would want to remove the reflectors. Other than the small gas tank, the bike is practically perfect just the way it is.

Probably 70 - 80% of VMax owners do the things you are not in favor of, so you are in the minority. There is nothing wrong with keeping the bike stock, its a great bike right from the factory. Changing the exhaust can remove 25 lbs. and add 15 HP. Quite a good modification if you like maximum performance. The ECU reflash from Gurued Gear not only improves performance, it also fixes many annoying traits of the factory tune and makes the riding experience that much more enjoyable. Most other mods are just a matter of personal preference. The only one that I will normally recommend against is the 240 tire, and wide wheel. It actually reduces performance in the handling department.

To each their own, stock or not stock, do what you want. I have a 21.5 litre gas tank which gives me 210 kms before the light comes on with 5-6 litres left which should bring me to about 275-300 kms., mirror extenders, heated grips, Hepco & Becker saddlebags, LED taillight and ECU reflash. The way I like it is the way it will always be and works for me. If you want it stock, leave it stock.
@willjohnson5861
@willjohnson5861 3 жыл бұрын
I understand wanting to leave it stock. I kept mine stock for a year before doing the nash flash. I wish it could be quieter but the performance gains are noticeable. The biggest change is the nash flash opens up more power in first and second gear. I’d love to have you try riding one with a flash and stock and see what you think. The mirrors on the end of the handlebars provide a better view behind me, but that could just be a problem I have because I am very tall. The stock mirrors just aim at my shoulder hHahaha. At the end of the day it’s my favorite motorcycle regardless of how you modify it.

DONT MESS WITH THE CAT CONVERTER AND THE EXUP SYSTEM. Your bike will loose 15% to 20% power if the exup system is disabled or removed. If U must only modify or change only the outside can after the cat converter. Adjust the cables and make sure the the valves fully open and close. Use the D 53 diagnostic program to make sure the exup is working properly.

While I do appreciate your take on most things, I also see that you approached this bike from a headspace that was about to purchase a Gold Wing. Knocking off the cat con and Nash flashing it right is a super thing to do. The cat con weighs more than 10 kilos and fries your legs with it's continuous heat. Removing the idiotic cat con gives you 2 more inches of clearance below the bike. Exhausts can stay the same....just inform Nash about that. A brighter headlight is required too.

I mostly agree. I have the sissy-bar just to hold my luggage. If you are touring, you must swap the fuel-tank (expensive but invisible). I also have set-back footrests, because I have long legs that I wanted to fold under the intakes. In Germany, the race-screen is useful, and IMO fits well with the lines of the bike. The stock-exhaust is beautiful. Modifiers that do not see the symmetry of intake and exhaust (both 2x2) should be prohibited from owning a VMAX.

Hello Jeff, nice to see a balanced video. Amount of bikers I talk to about exhausts and get told they should be louder etc annoys me as well. The only phrase that needs repeating is "If it isn't broken, then don't fix it". Being an owner of both a fairly sock Xmax gen 1 and a very customised XS650 I can see the benefits of keeping stock and upgrades / changes. But in the end of day you just need to do what you want with your bike. Not judge others for not doing the same. :)

The vmax stock has about 200 hp. An estimated 170-ish is transferred to the rear wheel. The vmax was originally created to turn out 230 hp, but the bike kept destroying the rear wheel so they tuned it down.

Hello Jeff, I totally agree with your analogy at the beginning. The best modification that I could possibly make, would not be with my VMax, but with myself losing weight. As far as the mirrors I do wish they were a little more functional. Mine are extended fully out, but I can only see what’s already to close beside me and not at all behind me. Like I mentioned I could stand losing weight, but I’m not a small guy either at over 6’ 265 lbs. My VMax is mostly fine the way it is, but I am going for the Puig naked smoked windscreen and wouldn’t mind a few polished accessories Highway pegs. . Had a fantastic ride yesterday a little cold in the 40’s but a very nice tank burning ride with only 2 bridges with a little ice on them. Take care as always you do a fine job on your videos. 👍👍

However, my 1700 is the carbon edition that came with an Akrapovic exhaust. So, the exhaust most likely doesn't harm the engine and for shure not THIS engine. I mean, during the 10000+ mls I do per year, less than 5 are under full throttle. No one (no one!!!) So, let them keep falling victims of good marketing and group pressure, as always I appreciate their "cheapies".

I bought a new 2018 VMax thats also blacked out and I did almost nothing to it. I added the backrest, replaced the horn with a denali sound bomb, replaced the seat with a Corbin (for height reasons), installed LED lighting and battery tender (which also powers my phone). I did all the work myself and it was VERY tactfully and tastefully done. That was it. Most of the people who "pimp" out these bikes are kids or idiots. I think the bike looks awesome stock, which is why I didn't touch it. I have had a bunch of new motorcycles over the years and I didnt buy this bike to modify it. Replacing the exhaust on this bike is utterly stupid. It DOESNT sound better, look better or add anything to performance. I didnt remove the mirrors or any of that crap. Like I said, only kids and idiots piss money away making this bike something it isnt. I love mine! :)

I have never commented on video's but I have to say that I can not believe what hew said. he believes that loud pipes are not a safety improvement. I have a 2003 Indian with 108k and a 2018 Indian scout with 2k and 2019 VMAX with 6k and I will tell you that is crap if you do not believe a loud motorcycle do not raised awareness. I ran stock exhaust for 30 k on my 03 and I had cars merge into my lane more times than I could count and when I modified the exhaust I have not had it happen one time. I do not believe this guy has logged many hours in the saddle.

I wouldn't tell you what to do, also someone shouldn't be a hypocrite. Can't get a different bike if it's already the top bike. It's lowered. I flashed my ECU, put on cross pipe exhaust, now pushing 197hp. also put on end of handlebar mirrors, and can see more behind me, than I could with the OEM mirrors. I like the looks of your bike, and wouldn't tell you to change a thing, but if I want to modify mine don't tell me not to.

hi Jeff, the way 2020 Yamaha VMAX was built, and as u had presented this, it is what it is much appreciation about ur shared video. One thing concerns me though, you mentioned about ceasing of production for this amazing bike. does this spelled doom to all the riders and owners of VMAX? dies aftermarket parts still in abundance? what about those who still looking for this bike would this be practical to acquire? thanks and mpre power to ur video vlog. keep it coming! happy holidays!
@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 жыл бұрын
@@raymondjumaquio37 Thanks for watching and sharing. Getting OEM parts will eventually become more difficult as Yamaha ceases production on them along with the bike. That’s always an issue in the industry. As for getting a VMAX, there are a few dealers in the US that still have new ones. Getting a used one may become more difficult as owners will want to hold on to such a rare and iconic bike. I’m never getting rid of mine.

Though I agree no one should insist others modify their bikes, there are good reasons for everything you’ve mentioned being done, and more. First, one cylinder on the VMAX runs slightly lean, and the only correction is to flash the ECU and receive all the other benefits of that mod. This includes de-restricting max throttle percentage in the lower gears, reducing off-throttle engine braking, and much smoother throttle operation overall. This flash can be done while retaining the stock exhaust, including catalyst. And the ECU factory tuned can be restored readily for any reason. Side reflectors are tiny and merely meet DOT mandate for manufacturers. Removing them is a minor safety factor equivalent to a technicality. All the rest is simply personal preference. The stock mirrors are functional, but are garbage to adjust while looking cheap and ugly. Other mirrors are every bit as safe and functional as the stock ones. I know of no one who blindly advocates for the removal of the passenger seat; and I see you’ve added a passenger backrest according to your preference. Why not leave others to their preferences and simply exercise your own. Your videos are nornally quite helpful and an example of how others might make their own videos better. This one is just you on a frustrated vendetta against whomever irritated you about exhaust replacement, etc. I prefer the stock exhaust cannister look, but will be replacing my catalyst with a specialty cross-over pipe. I’ll also be doing some of the other things you abhor. That’s okay. It’s mine, not yours or anyone else’s. Let’s all leave it at that.

To each his own, but it seems a little ironic to so profusely refuse to modify your bike as not to look like everyone else's bike. Yet to keep it in so much original condition to look just like everyone else's bone stock Vmax. Eh, you're better off, the limited aftermarket products for these bikes are so expensive, you may as well buy a Harley and bolt on all the Lego kibbles n bits you're little heart desires. I know, I have both.
@Jason-sz5zv
@Jason-sz5zv 3 жыл бұрын
The great thing about this bike is you're usually the only one with it. You don't need to modify it to stand out. I've had mine for 3 years and only ever seen one other. And that was passing on the highway. I can understand people modifying a Harley. They're so slow you have to just to get out of the way of cars. And so unreliable aftermarket parts are needed to try and make them stay running. Plus there's tons of them and they all look the same so mods are needed just to stand out.

I quickly turned around and met up with its rider. Got some nice pictures. His 15 was modified as far as cat removed and flash done. He claimed 235 hp at the crank with 35,000 plus miles and still running like new. I didn’t envy his ride. Still icy in spots and he still had a hundred miles to go started out from Texas. I wish I could post a pic. Take care!

Opinion: Yamaha built a perfect bike, in every respect, when they built your VMax. "Built", the end result of years of research and experience in all things related to their baby. Perfect to everyone... no. Perfect to me...Oh, Yeah! The fact that someone would buy this outrageous machine, throw a leg over the seat, start the motor and twist the throttle proves that they are part of a select few, who, "get" what Yamaha started in 1985.
