The Wr250r is still the best bike in the low maintenance dual sport category, it’s a shame it’s going away. Releasing a low maintenance wr300r or wr350r with a bit of weight shaved and KYB suspension would be the ideal bike in my opinion

I have owned 2 wr450f's over the past 10 years but they were money pits, the wr250r is a perfect bike for those of us who just want to have fun and explore. I hope Yamaha replaces it with a 300 or 310 version as I would be much happier than a 250r as it just lacks that bit of "want". IMO, the best bikes Yamaha EVER sold were the IT range. I owned a 1981 IT175H and man that thing was perfect. Long-range tank, a mix of yz with enduro gearing and I could ride that thing all day anywhere at all without refueling. I hope the 250r is being replaced with a 310 version, it needs a little boost.

Good challenge there. My dream outcome for dropping the wr250r would be the announcement of the all new wr350r at about the same weight with more torque down low slightly lower revs up high and a rear spring/shock that better matches the front fork to make it more settled in whoops. Even a 300 or 400 would be great - like a modernized version of Suzuki’s DRZ400 with a 6th gear. Yup - that would win HUGE in the dual sport community. DRZ is still selling strong... WR400R may entirely displace it if they can just avoid the Honda KTM-competing error of hyper-performance and 10 hours of maintenance every 20 hours of riding.

2 Wheelie The first time I saw this bike on you tube. A touring guy road a 1200GS and found it was to large for the type of riding he wanted to do. So the next year he came out with the WR250R sported out for duel sporting. I fell in love with that little bike. He rode all over the US and the next year up to Prudhoe Bay with a buddy. Some time passes and I retired early and built out a Sprinter van and It needed a explorer bike so I found a 2018 with 3k in great condition and here WE are. I have it set up for day ventures. I’m not sure why Yamaha stopped making them they are like a cult with the resale value. Not cheap at all. Well keep duel sporting and will se what happens. Around Bend Oregon out !

The discontinuation might be due to making the the WR-R's engine Euro5 compliant or Yamaha might be pausing production for a major refresh, like you said a WR300R could be on the way😁 . I'm in a strange situation here in CT. I don't ride "dual-sport" I stick to the off-road and mid enduro. But the major riding area we have has a requirement that bike have a street-legal registration and many of the other areas require a few miles of road-riding to get too. So I have to have my "dirt-bike" street-plated.....The game is; 1. get a dual-sport and "enduro-ize" it or 2. get an enduro and "street legalize" it(to get it trough state DOT inspection). Most of the group I ride with find option 2 to be the best, true dual-sports have to many concessions & compromises to be effective for fully off-road riding. I'm starting to plan for my next woods weapon and I'm 99% sure its going to be a WR250F(converted) ..unless Yammie comes out with a WR300 line that includes an F or FX model💪

Nice thing about the older technology bikes like the XT250 or TW200 is, simplicity = reliability. With air cooling there's no radiator, hoses, water pump, or coolant to worry about. In a fall on rough trails or riding in remote areas, this is important. With SOHC engines on these older models, valve adjustment is with wrenches. With DOHC engines like on the WR250R, you have to take the whole valve cover off and maybe even the camshaft to access the shims, and you might have to go buy new shims. I'm not saying this is why Yamaha is keeping these older models, just what I like about them. No-one really know how decisions are made in corporate board rooms! They're not always right.

would you say the XT250 is a better beginner bike than the WR250R? I like the lower seat height, and that it's air cooled.
@namdarbolour9890
@namdarbolour9890 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Seat is lower. Less powerful engine makes accidental whiskey throttles less dangerous. However, the WR has better suspension cuz front and rear are fully adjustable for compression, rebound, and preload. The XT only preload on rear. Weight practically the same ( within 4 lb ). Good luck!

They just want to study the Honda and the Kawasaki for a few years. Probably 1-3 more likely 2 years then roll out with a bike that just wipes the floor of kawi 300 and Honda 300. Everybody will freak and the market will go up on older wr250 bikes and increase the hype and the demand. Then in a few years roll the bike out and everyone will sell the kawi and Honda and older WR for the new WR. It makes logical business sense. If they released some thing right now they would be 1/3 of the market for somebody’s buying decisions Honda Kawasaki or the Yamaha. But if they spend a year or so studying watt Honda and Kawasaki have then release then like I explained everybody would want to sell what they have for the new Yamaha giving them the whole market. Or more of it as it’s not likely Honda or Kawasaki will update either bike soon going off history. And also like you explained when the original WR was released it was a profound move and a amazing bike with great capabilities. Think of how the Tenere 700 was marketed and released. They want that same hype and find a good in between from that bike and the older WR 250

I think there will be a WR300, saying the WR250 is discontinued and not announcing the replacement should bring a boost in sales to clear the 250 stock as buyers speculate it might be gone and not replaced, then after the spike in sales on the 250 they drop the WR300 on us with new spec, new tech and shiney bits, and then we all want one

All the praise for the WR250R reminds me of all the praise for the Honda S2000 two seater roadster. Many parallels but the power delivery and market value especially. They are each gutless wonders with all their power near their very high redlines. That's a two edged sword: if, and when you ride/drive them at their limits, they are capable, exciting, and fast; and you can enjoy constantly shifting to stay in the zone. On the other hand, you're gonna need to put all that energy constantly shifting and keeping it near redline into your ride to just to enjoy the aforementioned. Then there's market prices, WR250R's are commanding $5,500 to $6,500 in my area, that's a lot more than a long list of competent dual purpose bikes available with useable midrange HP and Torque. I get why the WR250R and S2000 get such praise and have followers. But in the roadster class I chose the BMW Z3 with it's broad power band and much lower price. Would the equivalent comparison be a DR-Z400? If not, I disagree with the narrator, I think that bump of a jump at 5:05 COULD have been tackled with an XT225, or any of the 250's. And that I could have enjoyed that same ride as much and kept up on that ride with any of the other 250 class bikes.

They will come out with a Mini T in the 400cc range but I don't think they are in any hurry. They are an engineering company that produces a lot of other products and their attitude about capturing the market is different than the other companies. They are engineers saying, "eh, so we lose a few customers, we'll make up for it when we release a better engineered bike for first time riders."

Yamaha need to make a new WR450R or WR450F Rally type bike, kind of like a mini Tenere 700 and bring it to UK/Europe as we have all been crying for a bike like that for years now since they done away with the WR250R in UK/Europe years ago. Yamaha need to get a decent dual sport/enduro bike in the making to compete with Honda etc that are gradually releasing those types of bikes finally albeit choked up with euro5 conformities but still cool they are doing them. For me though a WR450R or WR450 Rally preferably would be just the ticket. 35bhp+ minimum, 10l+ fuel tank and under 150kg wet weight would be THE bike of bikes.

I'd like to see the WR offered in a 300 cc or bigger engine. I have been looking at dual sports for a bit and kind of decided on the WR 250 and of course they discontinue it. I don't need a huge engine, I just want to explore some trails in thee Pine Barrens and I love Kayaba suspension. I would think you could basically just stroke that current 250 engine out and almost make up the extra 50 cc's. But if they want to completely redo the entire frame, engine and suspension then OK that's fine too just make sure they keep the reliability factor. The # 1 complaint I hear is the lack of power on the WR 250 R so throw some displacement at it and continue the legendary line of dual sport Yamaha. Somewhere between 300 and 400 cc's.

I don’t think Yamaha will replace the WR250R in a hurry which is a great shame. They seem to be focusing on the ADV bikes due to success of T700, plus their Enduro Range like WR450F and YZ etc. I wish someone would start filling this gap we have and produce a WR350R or modern DRZ400.

Just speculation, but I maybe Yamaha didn't want the WR 250R to compete with their Tenere 700? It's like why did Ford discontinued their Excursion, one of their best selling SUVs? In a perfect world, Yamaha should be putting out a TW450R! 🤘😂 [I've had a lot of bikes over the past 25ish years, and am currently on TW200 # 3] Why they're toying with nixing the WR250R is beyond me.. They're amazing! Like you mentioned, the 'craze' seems to be shifting to the more 'Adv-Styled' models, so I wouldn't be surprised if they put out a lighter/smaller version of the Tenere.. Sort of like how Honda had the Africa Twin for the full size model, and then the CB500X - modded - being considered the Half-rica Twin.. An Adv bike with 1/2 the bells & whistles & weight is Always a nice option! Personally, I've never been much of a fan of the 'crotch-rocket' / sport-bike look, and that's pretty much what they've been modeling most of these 'Adv bikes' after.. **Shrug** Yamaha had a killer thing going years ago with the BW-series cycles [Big Wheel 80cc, 200cc, 350cc] and they pulled the plug on those despite how many people rode and loved them.. And now this.. Again, it's beyond me why they do some of the things that they do.. **Fingers Crossed** that whatever they do is better/cooler than what's out now, because next spring, it'll be tempting not to grab another bike besides my TDUB.. That's my bomb around mini-adv / trail bike.. Great for that.. On longer trips and or on the highway.. Not so much. haha 👍 Sam -

Here is the REAL reason: (stupid effing) Emissions. The joy killer of all vehicles whether if it's cars or bikes. Especially with the Globalists push for EV-everything on vehicles. I agree with you, it doesn't make ANY sense for Yam to discontinue the WR250F since Suzuki's pre-historic DRZ400 series are STILL on the (North American) market. It's not entirely the Tenere-7's fault, I would think Yamaha may update the WR250R & the R6 to comply with the Euro-6 malarky. Who knows, the R6 and the 250R will return just like on how Kawasaki pulled it off with their newest-gen KLR650.
