Good job Del, I have also done all of the different types of blue spot brakes with no problems afterwards, what goes together mechanically can be taken apart in reverse and can be checked for any leaks using the master cylinder before you fit them. There are slight differences in the front ones, yours had a complete blue spot insert complete with the o-ring section at the back, on others they have a seperate steel disc with the o-ring in it that is seperate to the blue spot star ring, but still seal up the same, in every one I have used the original o-ring were are always perfect and never needed replacing in any of them.

Mate to be fair, every single bike i`ve had i`ve always treated it as a full restoration service, including bearings, oils, brake fluids, calipers pads and disks. I don`t know what works been done to that bike in the past, and by whom, whether they were competent mechanics or weekend warrior spanner monkeys, so for my own safety and piece of mind i rebuild the calipers from scratch with all new seals and i polish the pots where possible but as on my 2002 Triumph America i replaced them with new ones, so i know as long as i have the bike / bikes they are safe, road worthy and trust worthy. Great vid, off to get me one of those caliper removal tools and a blue spot 22mm removal tool. Love to Lady P x

Usual high quality video Del, as for the "difference of opinion", you have to do what you feel is right, and yes, you were quite right to strip the calipers the way you did. Nothing wrong with being thorough about a job.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Cheers Andy, I get what the advice says in that there's no need to remove them because you can treat them like a solid caliper and blow the pistons out with an airline, but you need a little more when you find yourself having to use an hydraulic press to push the pistons out!... the cost of neglect aye?!

The one thing I’ve rarely seen complied with in the service manual for every one that I’ve read and also not followed, is to replace the front brake caliper bolts. They’re just torqued and not stretched so really not sure why.

Not sure I would feel the need to do that, they are steel into aluminium, the torque values are nominal. as long as the threads are healthy and not corroded, I've always re-used them...

Great vid as ever - love watching these. I recently had new tyres fitted. The person doing the work torqued up the bolts on the rear wheel (GS) but did not torque up the calliper bolts, pinch bolts or axle bolt at the front. He said he did not know what the torque values were. Was he right to not torque them up? I was concerned and found out the torque values and did them once home. Really interested to know what you think…
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Well he certainly took the right aproach (other than maybe go find out the torque values, they're all online), but to admit to you and warn you, is right and correct.. if he was an experienced mechanic he would have fitted everything securely and tight enough to be safe... im more interested in what YOU found later, were they loose when you went to torque them up at home...or were they all secure?.. that's the measure of his skill.!
@michaelneve3223Ай бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for the quick answer. He did not admit it, I asked him! However, everything was tight and secure when I checked. Main issue was having to buy a T45 and T50 to check everything front and rear! I thought it was a safety issue and these types of bolts had to be torqued up, not as important as I thought then?
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
@@michaelneve3223 Always lots of 'scare' about torque values. They're not just for making sure things are tight enough, often it to make sure you're not doing them up TOO tight, or that there may be a series of fasteners that all need to the the same, as maybe in an engine casing so as not to warp it... once again mate, an experienced machanic with years under his belt will know the right 'feel' of a fastener, not only how tight to fit it so it doesn't fall out.. but how NOT to over tighten it and snap it off...becasue over the years he will have done both.. that's the value of exerience, and the value of a good mechanich you can trust. you don't just pay him for the hours he worked on your bike, you're paying for the years of practice and knowledge he brings to the job he did for you, as proven my the fact that everything was fine when you checked.

noice.... 😆 Brill video... shared it already, will be posting it in the yammy 600/900 groups. I really like how easy it is to pop the pistons back in these calipers after they are cleaned and have new seals in. Old xj900s calipers, youre wailing on them like the old fashioned monkey boy to get the pistons in. One major reason Ive upgaded all 3x of my xj900s divis. Q. does it matter which way round you pop the spring pad holder thing back in??
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Hi mate.. Thank you for the support in sharing the video.. much appreciated.. I noticed the spring plates are 'sided' in terms of their shape.. but the holes are in the middle and they fit prefectly well either way... have a squint at the schematic in your manual though, that will give you the prefered orientation..!
