Yamaha XS400 Electronic Ignition Install

Installing an electronic ignition on the Yamaha XS400 build. I made this video by popular demand as it seems there is little information out there on ignition options for the XS400. What I have done is fit an aftermarket (Pamco I believe) system meant for a points based bike and fitted it to an XS400 that originally had a TCI/CDI system. To do this I had to source a points style mechanical advance to then convert and use for the new electronic rotor pickup.

Beyond the system shown I used basic 7mm ignition wire and some 90* spark plug caps for 14mm plugs.

I had an "XS360" that was almost exactly like this..... I picked it up to deliver pizza on & I want to say the bike was 7-8 yrs old when I bought it in 1988-89 time frame? Anyhow, it was a peppy little bike that was easy to handle in the Washington, DC area I was in & I could carry 2 large pizzas in a hot bad along w/ a 6-pack of cokes by laying them between my stomach & on the gas tank. The seat to tank kept it pretty level & my gut held it in place. Great build, got my attention. TY, peace

I prefer a points system. Less worrisome. I always keep a match book under my seat. Points have kept motorcycles on the road for many years. Very glad to see someone spending the time on one of my favorite bikes. Mine was a 70s XS400 with spoke wheels and double leading shoe front brake. With a little tune magic it would do the Ton! Made it a Cafe Racer. Wish I still had it

nice work.. I was fortunate on my 81 Yamaha SR185 to use a new TCI from Ignitech was $200 with the shipping from overseas. Its worked beautifully though. Glad we have ways to keep these old bikes running.

This is very relevant. It isn't super difficult to understand various bike ignition types but I've been trying to find explanations that make sense to me. Edit: I absolutely LOVE finding those part number cross-references to make custom solutions!! Many engine internals can swap between models from the same manufacturer :D
