It's a tough call. Cannot go wrong with either one, as said, but the looks of the R3 vs the power of the 400 would be the deciding factor. I hope Yamaha comes out with an R4. That would make things a bit more interesting. 400cc is really the sweet spot for bikes like this. Quite capable in every real world riding scenario plus the economical value is hard to deny.

Amazing comparison and review without bias! After test riding both, I chose the R3 as my first bike. Sure there was more power in the Ninja, but EVERYTHING else just felt better on the R3. My confidence while on the R3 felt higher than on the Ninja too. Something about the ergonomics and control I had in both low/high speed situations. I'm sure others may feel the Ninja is better for them, which is why I'll encourage anyone who is thinking about buying either to go out and ride them. Don't just make your decision off reviews alone.

Wish we could get out of the mindset that you have to grow out of little bikes. I rode middleweight bikes for 7 years and then I went down to an R3 and its honestly a blast to ride. Really made me a better rider, not being able to rely on power and instead learning how to carry way more corner speed. Most of the guys I meet who started out on small bore bikes for a season or two are nowhere near ready to move up to a larger bike but they're talking about getting bikes making 100+ HP. People think because a bike doesn't scare your pants off when you twist the throttle that its time to move up, when in reality most of them can barely handle any remotely technical riding on their 300.

After doing much thinking and research, I finally went with the R3. Reasons: 1. Actually sitting on both, I realized instantly that I did NOT like the extra fairing on the ninja. It felt fat, clunky, and too much for me personally. Despite it looking really good, I wasn’t a fan of the POV when I actually sat on it. 2. The R3 seems to be preferred by people who actually have a lot of experience riding motorcycles. I’m willing to give up just a little bit of power for an overall better engine/seating/experience 3. The looks of the R3 grew on me tremendously. The Ninja looks great don’t get me wrong, and it was the bike I was originally gonna get, but after months of looking at them, I realized just how good the R3 looks. 4. I’m only 185lbs. I’ve never ridden a motorcycle. I don’t think I’m going to stress too much about 70 CC’s. 5. The R3 dash looks better imo 6. I found a helluva deal (1200 miles on a 2019 Yamaha Blue) for $3,900. Verdict: I would have been very happy with either, but ultimately, I’m very glad I went with the R3 😊 let me know you guys opinions!

Just bought my first bike. It took me a long time to decide on which bike I wanted. I ended up getting the R3. The Ninja 400 has the power, but honestly I don’t need that extra power right now because I’ve never ridden a motorcycle before, and I personally like the Yamaha blue color. My next bike will be in the 600cc range, for now I’m happy with the R3. Signed up for some motorcycle classes, can’t wait to ride. It’s always looked like such a good time.

@Moto-romomo5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t gotten to ride the ninja 400 so I’ll compare the R3 and the 400 just on looks. The ninja 400 doesn’t look bad in the front with the head lights. The flush mount turn signals and rear look better on the ninja 400 than the R3. The R3 has a better looking front end tho and it isn’t too hard to replace the turn signals and rear fender with something aftermarket that looks cleaner. The R3 has plenty of torque that starts pulling at about 6,500 RPM so it’s not a boring bike for beginners at all. It’s easy and comfortable to ride while maintaining a sportyish seating position (I have short arms so I was never completely up right). It’s really easy and comfortable to ride both in city and highway traffic as well. What’s nice about the R3 is that once you properly learn how to ride you’ll have the motivation to move on to a bigger bike like the ninja ZX6R or the Yamaha R6 while with the ninja 400 you might not want to as soon which could be seen either way as a plus or a minus. I have the Ninja 300 and between the ninja 300, ninja 400, and Yamaha r3 I would go either the cheapest route since it’s a low displacement/beginner bike or if the buyer has no concern for funds then buy an r3 for a season or two and move up after. Hope this helps someone with their decision between the ninja and r3.

@pauld.b71295 жыл бұрын
@@MalcolmCir Still the cheapest option though. I always say its probably better to buy a used Rebel or Kawi 250 to start on. You only pay like 800-1500$ and if you drop it or worse, it will hardly even go down in value lol. I used to have a Ninja 250 for the track. A 90s model. With an exhaust, jetting and pod filters and track gearing it was a really fun bike to ride. 0-60 in 4 seconds is a ton of fun.. Layed down multiple times at decent speeds and the toughness of the Ninja 250 was always amazing to me. Even when it took a hard tumble, nothing major ever broke. Rebel are a blast too. If its just a stepping stone, no real need for the latest and greatest. Save the money for the middleweight you move to haha

I ended up going with a 2019 R3 and I absolutely love it. Of course it is used since it is 2022 but I got a great price on it from the dealer. It is ridiculous how these bikes are around 7000 after all the tax, title, and freight fees. I was going to get a new ninja 400 but the price was the main factor buying new. Most the of ninja 400s I found were from private sellers and I just don't like the extra hassle versus going to a dealer like I did. After seeing the R3 at the dealer I ended up buying it the next day. It is the same white color as in the video and mine looks literally brand new. Plus I didn't have any problem getting the front wheel to come up in first so that's enough power for me at least for a while. The main reason I bought it was to use on the Blue ridge parkway and tail of the dragon since I live so close to them.

Sitting next to each other, the R3 looks soooo much nicer. It has a modern agressive look, those gold forks really stand out, the dash looks super high quality. I can't help but see some Ninja 250 DNA in the 400. Looks ok on its own, but sitting next to other bikes, you can tell it was built on a budget. But the ninja 250 was just a good motor in a frame with some plastic tacked on, seems like the 400 has that same feel to it. Looks wise, the R3 is so much nicer, but i'd probably still go for the 400. I'd go for the Z400 though.

I'm not talking Ohlins & Brembo's but some good fully adjustable suspension & radial brakes would be a start. Would also like to see some better rear sets as standard as these looked horrible. I think 45bhp is fine but the chassis & overall equipment could & should be so much better imo, we're probably only talking a few hundred on the MSRP for these sorts of upgrades.

Also the quality is very impressive, feels a lot more expensive than it is. The ninja 400 feels like an average motorcycle with more power. It doesnt feel like a sport bike nor a touring bike. Here's a thought Honda (and I'm not genius): Let a CBR400 replace the CBR300. Let a CBR550r replace the CBR500r and let a CBR700r or 750r replace the CBR650r. I know these bikes are also made to a a price point and Honda may not be able to do that in a way that makes sense for THEM.

I wish the manufacturers had agreed to create a class based on a modern street legal, 250cc, single cylinder sport bike, ideal for young, budding road racers as well as old guys who just want to do track days and make to work on Monday in one piece. Honda had the right idea with the original CBR250R, but with no 'set-in-stone' class displacement (like the 1000cc, 750cc, and 600cc classes), it's just become an arms race. Yamaha came out with the R3 twin and blew away the original CBR250R single, then Kawasaki blows Yamaha out of the water with the Ninja 400. These bikes are now fast approaching the 600 class in terms of power and weight. When a MotoGP bike weighs less than the entry level class, something is wrong. In the days of great racers like 15 time world champion, Giacomo Agostini, 500cc was the Premier (top displacement) Class, with 350cc being the intermediate class, and 250cc below that.

You're comparing 2 strokes with 4 strokes
@peteransel27155 жыл бұрын
Dalton v, It’s true that Ago’s long GP career from 1963 - 1977 eventually saw two strokes become the standard by the mid-the ‘70’s, but only his final two World Championship titles, (‘74 350cc & ‘75 500cc), out of fifteen total, were won on Yamaha two strokes, his previous 13 World Championship titles having been aboard MV Agusta four strokes, 350cc & 500cc. Though these were multi cylinder bikes, and my original suggestion was regarding single cylinder bikes, to keep things simple and maintenance costs low, perhaps I should have referred to previous, single cylinder, four stroke Grand Prix race bikes like the Norton Manx and Matchless G50, which both, by the way, only weighed about 300 lbs. vs about 350 lbs for a modern CBR250R and 370 lbs. for a Ninja 400.

Depends what you consider a “win” I think a major factor in a bike is the looks and r3 has that, I get compliments literally everywhere I stop it’s a pretty good feeling

@aaronperez80552 жыл бұрын
The deciding factor for me was the exhaust. You can make your Ninja louder with just a slip on. While with the R3, you have to get a full exhaust system for it to be louder. Both bikes look great tho imo. My bro owns an R3 and I own a Ninja. They’re very similar, Ninja just has a little bit more power. But the R3 leans a little bit better I feel like. You’re gonna have a lot of fun with either bikes tbh.

I bought a R3 in 2015...It is a really good commuter bike, but is not built for the sort of performance some prefer....I like the Ninja too....If you like simple, here you go...small displacement bikes...I found out that off the line it is about as fast as most Harley riders are capable of...and top end is temporary...you are not going to want to keep the throttle pegged after you get to 190km per hour...sober thoughts about suspension, brakes and road conditions prevail, you are riding a minibike for goodness sake...It don't sound like a billy goat, but it sure moves like one...

I got an R3 cause the insurance on a ninja 400 was way more and I would have to sink an extra couple hundred into it to replace the muffler to be able to sit my right foot on the peg without the exhaust interfering with my heel. (I don't have giant feet either US size 9 or 10)
@S9staryu5 жыл бұрын
I'm a size 10.5us and I used to bump into the stock can all the time. I have an m4 exhaust on it now and it's no issue. Surprisingly, the insurance quote I got on the 400 was lower than the r3, fully covered..

Looking at what my tire budget will be starting to thing a little 400 would be so much more economical. My tyre budget a season would be less than one of these
@4doorsformorelore8135 жыл бұрын
I commute on my r3, and honestly it feels very at home at freeway speeds. There's definitely room to be more aggressive on it, however the low end torque is pretty mellow, and the sweet spot doesn't last for long until you're shifting again to get up to higher speeds. The Ninja has every edge in the performance aspect which makes it great for a trackday bike, but the r3 has, in my opinion,ore comforo for the city commute with a little bit of backroad racing room. You're far less likely to get yourself into trouble on the r3, and to me the absence of the slipper clutch gives me a better feel for the engine, which helps me hone my skills as far as acceleration and shifting goes. The r3 is, in my opinion, Yamahas way of getting you hooked on the thrill of sport biking, and keeping you in the loop until you're ready for the learning experience that is the r6.

I have loved the r3 since they released it, even bought the 15 when it released. But. It’s always needed a little more. Love the new body work, and thank god for the suspension upgrade. But they really dropped the ball not squeezing some more power out of it to keep it competitive. Such a shame. Great machine. I still believe the R3 is the better bike, but for the price. I’d take the 400 also.
@pauld.b71295 жыл бұрын
It was the most powerful in the 300 class when they released it. Then the Duke 390 and Ninja 400 came out. Those are really pushing the limits of what the class even is though. Once it gets too much grunt, its no longer beginner friendly. The 390 is right on that line.

The design of the 636 and up(zx10r, H2) has been around for a few years prior the the 400's arrival in 2018. Kawasaki made the 400 look too similar to the Zx6R, for better or for worse, depending on your tastes. I don't mind it. I prefer a mean looking bike even if it's not a rocket like a 600.
