Younger Yamamoto was ruthless and enjoyed conquering, killing, and defeating his enemies. But once he conquered all of Soul Society, Yamamoto realized that defense is A LOT harder than offense. It's much easier to burn your enemies to ash than to protect your city from damage. Especially if your abilities could kill everyone around you. It's probably how Superman feels in American Comics.

I really didn't like Yamamoto initially, he seemed like a thoroughly two-dimensional character without depth or sympathetic traits. The Fake Karakura Town arc really changed my opinion of him for the better, showcasing both his core virtues (unshakable sense of duty, and a willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good without hesitation) and his surprising merciful side (having some pity for the likes of Wonderweiss and Ayon, sparing the Tres Bestias, telling Ichigo to save himself and escape before Yama's suicide attack). Oh, and he also truly proved what an absolute badass he was. The Thousand Year Blood War Arc really just accelerated Yamamoto's character development and humanization, showing so many new sides to him, making him so much more sympathetic and relatable even as he became more flawed and erratic. In the end, Yamamoto very surprisingly became one of my favorite captains, and his death was one of the saddest and most shocking moments in the series for me.
@vistatrista73 жыл бұрын
I had a very similar experience, although I'd say that I found him intriguing since his introduction based solely on his power. I really appreciate this video, because I never really paid that much attention to Yamamoto's subtle character development in the earlier parts of the story. He seemed like a stubborn, stern old badass with genuine honor and, deep down, a heart of gold from the beginning to me, but he actually does change and it is so interesting and compelling that his mellowing is actually what causes his demise. The usual story convention is that the softening of the rigid authority figure ends up leading to a happy outcome, but this is actually pretty relatable and realistic in that, by becoming more humanized and not such an idealized embodiment of supposed perfection, he simultaneously becomes more relatable and flawed. All of this together makes Yamamoto in retrospect such a well-written character, and while I'm deeply moved by his death, it truly does make the story so much richer. No other character death in Bleach thus is more profound and impactful, making Yamamoto one of my favorite Bleach characters.
@zurakuraworks3 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the Reigai arc where he initially sought to destroy Nozomi the moment their eyes met "for the greater good", but then decided to show his merciful side by taking a bullet (by "bullet" I mean "Ryujin Jakka's fire that Kageroza copied") for her & states that despite everything that she was, she's still just a girl who needs protection, even went as far as tagging-up with Ichigo & Nozomi just to take down Kageroza (despite the 3 of them ultimately losing). Also the part in the Reigai arc, where he said he was proud of Kyoraku & Ukitake when they rebelled against him during the Soul Society arc, and that he was disappointed at seeing their Reigai counterparts being voluntarily shackled by Kageroza's command, also says alot for Yamamoto's character. Even tho this is just a filler arc, it really helps in developing Yamamoto's character, & the fact that Reigai arc can fit into canon story makes it alot better.
@Metalhammer19933 жыл бұрын
well I always saw him as this respectable teacher character .yeah he is that military head but i already liked him in the soul society arc. His two students messed up the execution of a criminal and first he wants to hear their motive, when Rukia is executed he lies to her and says Ichigo and co will be save to put her mind at ease. He didn't need to do that. In Karakura he spares the Tres Bestia and even says, he is glad Wonderweiss doesn#t look like a child anymore and is furious for Wonderweiss, you know a hollow, a being he killed thousands of because of what Aizen did to him .he did have redeemable qualities but they kind of were always just the second layer of his character beneath his stern leader facade and for that I actually liked him.

I think the mix of losing his lieutenant and the ghosts of his past coming back both equally affect Yamamoto. Given how much pride Yamamoto has even despite his massive character development, I can imagine he would think he was to blame for his lieutenant’s death as his failure to kill Yhwach 1000 years ago created this situation. It really sucks he we never got to see the flashback to Yuha’s first invasion on the Soul Society, and how Yamamoto nearly killed him. Maybe that’s one of the things the anime will add, should it return.

This also makes me wish that we had any kind of scene between Yamamoto and Unohana. I think she would've been an excellent confidant for Yama. The two eldest captains talking about how and why this is happening and where things may have went wrong.

You have such a way with words, it's surprising to some extent that you choose to make bleach content with your expertise being what it is. I salute you. Do you know anything about the alternate final battle script yet? Seems interesting. Schrift P ftw
@syzorst3 жыл бұрын
That's actually a good take on Yamamoto. He was blinded by rage and his need for revenge. He normally doesn't go onto the battlefield at the start. If Yamamoto had been composed like he normally does, he would've stayed behind and encountered the real Ywach Bach instead of fighting a fake and been smart enough not to use Bankai. Instead Yamamoto rushed onto the battlefield and exhausted his stamina fighting a fake Ywach Bach and have his Bankai stolen which led to his death.
@bennettmoseley26223 жыл бұрын
I always like how Yamamoto's recruitment brochure says that "even I am still studying". Yes, he was the captain commander, but he learned to still value the input on those under him. Those that are the struts upon which the god of fire that leads soul society stands.

Yama was actually around for min of 2000yrs. circa 0AD: he creates the gotei 13, but apparently isn't the head captain at first. Instead is head of the Shinigami Academy. Unohana is captain of Squad 11 circa 1000AD: becomes captain commander 1000-1800AD: Kyoraku and Ukitake become captains
@hectoraliegbe94294 ай бұрын
Yamamoto created the Gotei 13 around 1000 years ago. That flashback with a young Sasakibe was 2000 years ago, which also should be noted to take place a century after Yamamoto founded "Shinoreijutsuin" (Spiritual Arts Academy).

@Intrepid_Explorer3 жыл бұрын
Honestly given her tenured experience and character change from how she used to be 1000 years ago, I think there is an argument to be made for Unohana being made the Captain Commander after Yamamoto's death at the hands of Yhwach. I guess that then Kyoraku wouldn't have gotten his character arc as such then (which I very much like), though I also think it was something of a missed opportunity to not further give the most senior captain her chance to step up and fill the role of a leader.
@Rhekon3 жыл бұрын
She's unfit. Her way of fighting especially is unsuitable. She'd rather kill indefinitely than win.

@CelVini3 жыл бұрын
Unohana doesen't have the leadership and she would be conflicted, a leader and smart Retsu Unohana or a brutal and straight forward Yachiru Unohana?
@Intrepid_Explorer3 жыл бұрын
@@Rhekon ...Except she is no longer like that? It was strongly implied that both her and Yamamoto both changed from how they were 1000 years ago; neither are their former selves. Yamamoto was, as Yhwach described "a true sword demon who would do whatever it took to defeat his enemy". He did not care about his subordinates, and thus Yhwach feared him. Similarly Unohana was the strongest Captain of the 1st generation and was personally sought out by Yamamoto, given the title of Kenpachi to signify her strength. Yet in the story we clearly see that both change from how they once were; Yamamoto having aged and softened under the burden of maintaining peace, and Unohana having retired her sword to spend her life healing others. In the Thousand Year Blood War arc clearly both "dust off" their past selves so as to face the ghosts of their past; Yamamoto returning to his 'sword demon' self in an effort to slay Yhwach, and Unohana to put on the mask of Yachiru so that she can undo her wrong and return the power that Kenpachi once sealed away himself. Neither is the person they used to be; and Unohana certainly is not the bloodthirsty monster she once was - it was largely a memory that she used for Kenpachi's sake, not how she truly is anymore. I think Unohana would be an incredibly pragmatic and level-headed Head Captain (we even see her hoping that Yamamoto finishes his battle with the fake Yhwach quickly, so she is clearly not always in the favor of fighting endlessly for entertainment).
@sepg50843 жыл бұрын

it's important to remember that ywatch took the coward's road here, using a body double to exhaust yama as well as his second in command (presumably using his schrift to make ywatch's eventual surprise attack that much more effective) for someone who called himself a god, and degraded yamamoto to the point of purposefully excluding him from the special war forces, he sure was scared of an old man. makes ywatch's death all the more sweet, it's glorious to see such a coward be cut down at the peak of his power.

I was genuinely thinking about the morality of Yamamoto in the segment where you outline his Bankai being stolen - especially as Juha says "How about I resurrect dead Shinigami now?", because it makes you wonder about the morality of his actions as a whole, was it really right for him to take so much sadistic pleasure in disposing of Juha (at least the impostor Juha). Riveting stuff really, and I hope you hit 100k soon.

this is why i wished ichigo did the final getsuga tensho against yhwach, instead they went for soemthing in which they'd use the first bleach opening for if that makes sense? so much deep and dark segments come from the final arc but when it gets to ichigo it's like he's just there because he's the one to defeat yhwach, even when revealing about his evolvement with ichigos mother and past. i would of liked ichigo to arrive already in his mugetsu form considering the stakes were considerably higher, with yhwach basically a god and has stepped on his family and friends and they're loved ones to get there and threatens to end everything he knows, even the new form he had was lacking in weight compared to both his fully hollowed and mugetsu form, it really was this last " hoo rah " thanos nostalgia type of fight when it should have started with ichigo walking up and before yhwach uttered half a word he would of already been using the final getsuga tensho, weakening yhwach , revealing the new form and then continuing on with how the manga ended personally not knowing how powerful that form is at ichigo's current state of power seems like a undersite when everyone else gets to flex they're new forms as well, if they would of showed ichigo's power being so high at the moment that he could essentially weaken god , would of really cemented a more memorable moment for the finale bleach, even if it wasn't the final blow.

I always enjoy your videos Tommo! Another small point I'd like to add is that during the Karakura Town fight, when he stepped in to fight Aion he did say that "You should be ashamed of yourself for forcing your Captain Commander on the Battlefield" and later on actually hide himself to set up the Ennetsu Jigoku to burn EVERYONE rather than fight himself. This point also showed his changes in the Ywach fight as not only he did not prepare like he did with Aizen but also actively engage in battle and that change caused him his life, had he been himself and setting things up, only show up when all of the other captains has fallen someone else might have been able to take out fake Ywach and his death would have been prevented
