Yamcha was the first character in the story to ever invent an attack of his own, the Spirit Ball, and is one of the only characters to have his own unique style of punches and kicks. I hate that he became the series' punching bag so much

The wolf Fang fist might actually be invented by Yamcha too. As far as we know, he had no previous master before Roshi. Still, Roshi did invent the Kamehameha and we saw him before Yamcha I'm pretty sure. I don't believe it's ever confirmed but Grandpa Gohan likely invented the rock paper scissors technique Goku used a lot in dragonball, he is the only one aside from Goku who ever really uses it I think. Still, after the show proper starts, I believe spirit ball is the first technique invented after a character's debut.

Truth. Master Roshi was astonished that Yamcha revealed in this fight that he taught himself how to do the Kamehameha, which prompted Krillin to do the same. Yamcha used to be cool and they turned him into a joke, but then again, Toriyama did that with most of the supporting cast.

@@adammeyer6650 He was sort of a joke from the start with his phobia of women. But when he lost that his new joke became that he gets cocky and then gets destroyed by his opponent. Tien utterly trashed him after this and Kami hit him in the balls. Yamcha's downfall doesn't begin with the Saibaman, it begins right after this very scene in the video.

@@HannibalKantter I also heard that he once said that the relationship between Goku and Chichi is the way it is because he doesn't know how to write romance. So what we have instead is one of the greatest relationships in animated history because it achieves a subtlety you don't see in other relationships, because too many try way too hard to shove romance in your face at every opportunity just to remind you that the characters are in love. It gives the impression that the reason Dragon Ball is so great is because Toriyama didn't really know what he was doing with certain things, and was therefore able to make for more relatable, and believable scenarios involving those elements because he wasn't forcing it like writers who are supposed experts in those fields. Instead, he was able to approach certain topics with a modesty that allowed for better storytelling, since he wasn't working with an inflated ego.

I really miss the fights like this that emphasized actual martial arts rather than just pure strength, speed, and whoever can muster the bigger ki energy beam. I still like the more modern fights, but a little more emphasis on martial arts would go a long way imo. The same sort of thing happened in Naruto.

In a story I'm writing, the main character temporarily gets transported to the Dragon Ball universe, pulls a Saiyan move and lets an enemy (Super Buu) power up more than she can handle, loses that fight, and then trains with Yamcha to learn the Wolf Fang Fist because it's the only move that translates well into her own powerset. Not perfectly, mind you, she had to replace the ki-enhancement with plasma, but still, she's using Wolf Fang Fist with plasma claws in her home universe now.
