Before I started riding I thought the speed wouldn't bother me at all, I always like to drive my car and ride my bicycle as fast as possible. But the first time I went out on a 30mph road I was terrified! Then the 40 zone came and I thought I was gonner for sure hahaha. Guess it's just the extra air resistance?!

@@fellastout Yes there is. You can get a used "Honda NC700X DCT" or a new "NC750X DCT". The DCT stands for "Dual Clutch Transmission" which makes the bike an "automatic" bike. It's impossible to stall it. (You can still shift gears using switches on the left side of your handlebar, but you can't stall it) I got an NC700X DCT when I started out and I can highly recommend it for beginners. Then, once you're comfortable riding it, which might be anything from 2 - 6 months, you can go and get yourself a manual bike. I still kept my NC700X DCT though, because it's the absolute perfect everyday commuter and shopping bike. Hope that helps! ;)

I would highly suggest to anyone wanting to get into motorcycling that they take the MSF course. It gives first time riders a chance to practice these basics and more basic maneuvers in the safety of a class setting with a professional instructor. Upon completion of the course you even take the driving portion of the test so all you have to do to get your license, in most states, is take the written test at the DMV. They even give you a discount for motorcycle insurance for completing the safety course.

Seriously you get a bike without any proper training? I had to finish 3 tests before I could get a license. The first was things like doing a 8 making a u turn, emergency stop the second was a theory test and the 3th a road test, before you can even do the road test or the test where they see if you can perform an 8 or u turn it's mandatory to get lessons from a professional instructor.

@@lexroet1215 Depends on the state in the US. I live in California and took the skills test on a closed course as part of an MSF course, then took the written exam and got a license. It's possible to take the written first and get a permit to learn to ride, but it would be harder to pass because the questions involved specifically how to handle your motorcycle in various scenarios. If you've never ridden, the questions don't make sense. Also, my daughter is 18. The first 6 months she had a restricted moto license which does not allow carrying passengers, riding at night or riding on freeways. Everyone under 21 is restricted for a while here. Riding test for me was slow speed cones, swerving, emergency braking, sharp turns, U turns, demonstrating countersteering.

I did this since I didn't want to drop my new bike. It helped me a ton and by the time I was done with the course I could ride pretty good and do everything except down shift while Rev matching. Totally worth it if you want to get good at riding on someone else's bike that way you won't risk dropping your own new bike when learning.

I really find the MSF course in US to easy and outdated. To have a good knowledge of how to ride a motorcycle properly in EU they upgraded the course since 2006. I know Belgium's course where I took it cuz I am resident here and France is bit harder in my opinion but if u truly want to know it all the best course is in Japan but it's hard as fuck.

5:40 It was desinged that way for safety reasons. So you don't accidentally shift into neutral when your downshifting through your gears quickly. 1st gear is designed to only move the bike from a standstill and not for driving. The other gears are meant to be used for operating the bike and to keep the motor in the optimal powerband while changing speeds.

Ive been tossing around the idea of getting my license for years now, and I’m finally going to do it! I rode dirt bikes as a kid, but its been years. Post Covid-19 I’m going to take the course and see if this is really a hobby i want to get into, but i think i really do!. I’m considering the Honda CB300R as a first bike maybe the Kawasaki Z400. Something not too crazy or heavy but easy to manage and cheap on insurance. It all depends on how i feel while on it. Super intimidated being a woman getting into this hobby and trying to learn how it all works, entering into a “mans world”. I would strongly recommend the Kawasaki z300. I got my first bike (kaw z300) just before we (South Africa) went into lockdown for Covid 19. It's a super forgiving bike, not too heavy, not too tall for me. It's cheaper than the full fairing ninja 300 but shares the same engine. Cheaper also than the z400. Also 300cc has cheap insurance and is so very light on petrol. Don't worry about bikes being traditionally more of a man's game... I've been pleasantly surprised at how friendly and accommodating men riders are towards new women riders. Also, there might be more women riders than you've previously realized. Go for a course, get yourself a bike and just go for it!

This is exactly how I feel. I am totally overthinking everything about motorcycles and how they function! I keep bowing out of taking training because I don't want to do something wrong and just loose respect or something from the guys, or just living with the embarrassment of not doing something correctly. The ONE thing that scared me on my bike right after I got my license was the 1st handful of times I rode on the highway. The one big flaw with the MSF course is that they don't have you ride at highway speed. I think my class only got up between 30-40 mph. It's a different experience rolling at 60-80 mph. Now I'll take her up to 100.from time to time just for the fun of it.

Clutch control felt so complicated at first in a car, buts it’s easier now switching to a bike because working the gears is just switching the roles of your left hand and foot. I’d hate to use a manual gearbox for the first time on a bike when more can go wrong if you mess up.

Having just completed my first road ride just this weekend past. I found the scariest part was obviously traffic, other cars etc. Nothing can really prepare you for that. But it doesn't take that long to grasp and accept that you have every right to use the road, at which point it comes down to just abiding by the road rules. I found my first time going "fast" (80kph/50mph) was quite daunting actually. You don't quite realise the effect wind can have on you and I found myself maybe gripping the bars tighter than I normally was around town. Overall though anyone who's pondering the idea of getting into motorcycles I highly recommend it, it's every bit as exciting and exhilarating as seasoned riders say it is. And this is coming from a complete noob!

There is one point which I've never heard before in how riding a motorcycle feels. How the speed feels like. I don't know if it's just me, but when I first rode a motorcycle, the feel of speed was pretty overwhelming. I didn't have any problems with driving 60 mph in my first car driving lesson, but just riding 20 or 30 mph on a bike felt so overwhelming in the beginning... And even if I got used to 30 mph, going up to 40, had the same effect again... has anyone experienced something similar?

I live in Germany, so I was really lucky, that the weather was still good around that time. Now after I got my license, the weather turned magically bad, like immediately after I received the physical license card xD it was either rainy and ~5°C or as it is atm, below 0°C, so it's freezing atm... I bought an SV650 N '04 like a month before I passed my motorcycle test and it's great :D ridden it about 250km, in the short time I could and I'm really looking forward to warmer weather! Just the feeling of riding on the streets is amazing. I already love driving cars (even though I can only drive a "boring" normal car) and riding a motorcycle is like a million times better, I just love it

I felt something limilar the first few times I rode a bike. Going 30 in the city in a car I would always be annoyed that people in front were going too slow lol, but going 30 on a bike I felt like I was going too fast.. I think a lot of it has to do with how many new impressions your mind has to take in, along with the wind hitting your body and face as well, there is just a lot to focus on in the beginning. After a while the overwhelming feeling went away completely and now I happily cruise at 100 and the only thing that really catches my attention is the constant stream of wind that is trying to blow me off the bike lol. #nakedbikeproblems But really, to me the biggest surprise the first time I rode was really how much you feel the wind hitting you, and how exposed you feel. It's so different from riding a car, and on a normal bike or dirt bike you don't get that feeling because you never get up to high speeds. But as with everything else, it's just a matter of getting used to it, then you hardly notice it anymore :)

Same here. When I first rode my Versys 650 at 80kmph, it felt like I was breaking the sound barrier. Terrifying and adrenaline-inducing. Now, 100kmph is a pretty regular speed for me, I don't even feel it. xD I guess it's mostly related to building up your skill in controlling the bike, so there's no more fear you won't be able to control it at higher speeds. :)

In my MSF course, I was taught that you always control your speed with the clutch(and throttle if the bike is less powerful)when moving slowly(under 15mph). Touching the brakes was emphasized as a bad idea when trying to do something like U-turn. I watched a girl lay the bike down 4 times for touching the brakes when moving slowly. Also, I downshift brake sometimes but I still touch by brake to illuminate the brake light so the car behind me doesn't run me over.

I never learned how to ride a motorcycle until I was 53, so yes, I can attest that going at any speed was very unnerving, and that was on a Honda Rebel 300. 90 kph felt like light speed and I kept looking for the seat belt to keep me attached to the bike. Advancing to a cb500x this year and am much more comfortable now.

I literally bought my Gixxer having only riding one time maybe 10 years prior and dropping my cousins 636 who was teaching me. they give me my keys to my bike knowing only what I knew from Dudes like Yammie and Cycle Cruza and Ect.. I rode around the parking lot for like an hour shifting 1-3 until I felt somewhat comfortable then I hit the streets for the 10 mins ride home and that 1st time in traffic I felt so EXPOSED and it was indeed TERRIFYING but in a good way. I recently Got my CDL and had been driving 18 wheelers for about 6 months and that was challenging but I get better so I figured a bike would be similar. And it was. I actually wish I could go back to that 1st ride again. I practiced daily in closed neighborhoods to get used to riding .. the real challenge was the Highway almost took me 2 months to hit the freeway in LA. I'm always learning new skills daily and it very therapeutic to ride. My only regret was I wish I had done it sooner

My story is very similar. Just bought a GSXR600 and passed my driving course, but being out on the road was very different than what I'd that it would be so I'll be practicing in neighborhoods to get used to it. I too drive a tractor trailer and that took long as hell to get used too, but I'm going on 3 years driving and I still love it. Be safe man!

My first time after purchasing my motorcycle, I just drove right out of the house and into town with zero experience..... not even dirt bikes, hahaha. Probably not the wisest thing to do though, if you are new rider I would suggest you trailer your bike or have someone ride your bike to an empty parking lot where you can practice and get to know your bike and it's characteristics before you take it out on the roads.

Thanks Yammie, My fiance and I are planning on buying a couple bikes. She's never ridin ( operated ) a bike but has been a passenger in the past. I just sent her this video in hopes she'll actually watch it. She has shown quite an interest . I grew up on dirtbikes and around road bikes so I've been going crazy ready to get the process rolling.

you are my FAVORITE KZbinr when it comes to motorcycle advice! I am so interested in motorcycles ever since I rode on one for the first time. I am a girl and I am possibly consider looking into riding a motorcycle on my own one day. Texas is known for REALLY hot weather during the summer and I can already imagine myself riding my own bike while feeling the Texas wind against my skin. interesting about the braking while moving slow , i figured this out when i was a kid when i wanted to stand still while on my bycicle when i waited for the green light i didnt wanna put my feet on the ground so i would pedal and brake and move very slowly but it was so much easier to keep balance

Keep in mind that lower cc bikes can't creep along just by feathering the clutch without throttle, they'll stall. Only bikes with a lot of torque can do that (typically 600cc and more), because bikes are pretty heavy these days. So the engine has to move the mass of the bike with you on it, and that's a lot of weight to move without throttle for a small displacement beginner bike.

Ive found that some new riders (ive taught a few how to ride) tend to benefit from having some experience with a manual transmission on 4 wheels, like a quad or even a car, as learning to use a clutch at the same time you're trying to keep a bike upright can be overwhelming to some. That being said riding a bike can have a steep learning curve at first, but dont get discouraged, most people can become pretty comfortable with just a few days practice along with some good pointers, like the ones our boy yam has in this video. Good idea for a vid man, great for the newbs out there. Keep it up.

I had my first motorcycle driving lesson yesterday and I had the problem with shifting to second gear because of the neutral gear... hopefully during my next lesson I won't have that problem anymore:D I'm already excited to get on the road !

I shat my pants through the entirety of first two weeks. I was stressed as hell and was constantly thinking about dropping riding a bike. Then I got a hold of motorcycle dimensions, inertia and controls and it became easier.

You know, motorcycles remind me a lot of airplanes. The smooth throttle is very similar to the throttle/mixture/prop pitch balance you have to maintain, and the rear brake is a lot like flaps during slow-flight. I think I might actually find this very intuitive when I try it out for real. Thanks Yammie :)
