Personally I would get an air cooled, carbureted dual sport with drum brakes and a kickstart and maybe also a big rally tank. The reason why I would choose an air cooled bike with drum breaks is because I wouldn’t have to worry about finding coolant and break fluid. I would want a very simple reliable bike.

I wonder how light and effective a solar panel can get. Depending on how much you wanna carry, a model with a big but long slim box in front could be good. A cargo bike. You quickly throw stuff in there and ride on. ... A solar panel working like a roof .. An efficient e_motor you load that way and downhill and by your own effort that helps you sprint away even up hills when necessary. That could be really cool.

@@marcofelipelopes3081 - Depends on your pace. If you're riding cautiously, you'll burn about the same as walking, but cover more distance. Another plus of a bicycle, is to use it as a cargo porter as the NVA did in the '60s. You can load up a bike with more baggage and crap than you can ride with, then walk along next to it and simply keep it balanced.

The old Honda Rebel, with 80/20 dual sport tires. Hear me out: it's comfortable to drive for hours, you can swap parts across all of the years, it's an air cooled single thumper, and it's chain drive. Why chain drive and not shaft? The shaft is definitely less likely to break, but a couple of master links will fix a broken chain. Break a shaft taking your cruiser off road and you're fucked. Even if you can find a new one replacements aren't easy.

Keep in mind, fuel availability and lifespan would be limiting factors. Syphoning/draining will work for a while to source fuel. But stored and stabilised fuel would be the only way to keep fuel supplied in the longer term (up to 2 years). Which means you are based somewhere and using the bike for supply runs, hunting/fishing trips, maybe staying in touch with community nearby. Light, quick, nimble, preferably quiet, reasonable range, load carrying (eg hunted meat), and multi use all become considerations. Quad bikes would be great short distance work horses. Trials bikes and dual sports great for recon and maybe hunting. Dual sports would make a lot of sense most times. Adv bikes would be good as ‘Get Out Of Dodge’ bikes. Bicycles have benefits especially regarding noise, but even with a trailer you can’t carry very much. In a long term shtf all of us are eventually walking or riding horses. And roads would be potentially dangerous. Excuse my waffling on 🙂

It needs to be as quiet as possible. Availability of parts to be found after Society shuts down. Next how hard is it going to be for me to retrofit this motorcycle with racks so I can carry extra gas in cans. During the Apocalypse you don't really want to be a lone Rider on the road with the only working vehicle. That's my quick short list

Drz400s. Dual sport that can accept a passenger or a bunch of cargo due to the passenger sub frame. User end maintainable due to the archaic carburetor. Large enough engine to get on the highway or out of the way of danger quick as opposed to a 250. Light enough to dirt ride. Rally tanks are available for the extra mileage. Kick and electric start on earlier models and a kick start can be added in the recent models.

I'd go with the new Yamaha Ténéré 700. It's a lightweight adventure bike that is properly set up for decent off road, while being well behaved on street for longer journeys. It's a bike that has the size to fit a decent amount of gear and luggage and whatever you want to bring with you - whereas a dedicated dual sport might not have room for much more than the rider and just a few small bags. The T700 is also a gem of a bike because it has great components, but it's not a victim of over-electronification, and can be mended easily. It also sits on a properly tested platform of the MT-07 and has one of the most widely tested engines known to man, and swapping mechanical parts from an abandoned MT-07 or XSR700 will be a straight job with no hassle. It's a bike that ticks every important box I can think of, and I don't think I would want any bike over the Ténéré 700.

I’d think I’d go for something that’s easy to find parts for. I think being able to repair the bike is more important than the capabilities of the bike, I’d probably get a sportster or a rebel, every town you go to in an apocalyptic time will have at least 20 sportsters parked somewhere, most of the parts will be compatible with what you got and the evo is a solid design. Slap taller shocks and some knobbies on it and your golding.

Just picked up this video. I’m from the prepping community but new to bikes. I’ve been digging up information on a “sustainment bike” for our homestead. Dirt bikes and dual sports provide “modern day pack animal” kinds of capabilities without much maintenance or fuel costs. I did not know you could upgrade tanks. That’s awesome! Do you have any input on a 125 a 230 or 250? I’m leaning towards something that would be easy to move by hand or even load into a truck/trailer without much strain. Love the video man!

A bicycle is the best apocalypse vehicle because it is generally faster and less stress than walking; requires much less maintenance than a motorized vehicle; requires no food or water like a horse, camel, donkey; helps keep the operator in decent cardio shape; can be modified to carry luggage similar to a motorcycle; can be modified to tow a light trailer as well (have seen a guy towing a canoe behind a bicycle)

I added a kickstarter to my 06 KLR and put a big IMS tank on it. After a lot of years of use the plastic has relaxed a little and it takes a full 7 gallons to fill it up from empty. I built some panniers for it and even built a Kolpin 1.5 gallon Fuel Can with carrier attached behind the left pannier. So that's a thearetical 425 miles between gas stops. With the crashbars and a lot of other custom mods it make s great TEOTWAWKI machine, but it is a little heavy. (Lucky for me I'm a big guy. 6'2" 225 lbs) I've done 6 week rides through all the big off road trails on it in the US. Plus I know this carbed engine inside and out. My tool role has been perfected to where I can keep it running no matter what. Best advice for the worst that can happen, is know how to fix your machine, even with bailing wire and duct tape if you need to. I also have a 10 year olf Super Tenere and like riding it when I need to get across the slabs fast, but the KLR gives me an honest 50 mpg and will run 75 MPH all day. And is actually the most comfortable bike I own, because I've got the seat tuned to me. It is my opinion that any Dual sport between 400 to 650 cc;s will be good enough, if outiftted out well before hand. But then again, there have been some really nice Adventure Rides posted up on KZbin on little bikes under 125cc's. Being able to toss a small ride into the bushes to hide, has some merits in a dangerous world where being able to dodge, duck and weave have their advantages.

I would choose a wr250 because my dad has one and he has a couple of soft bags and mounts for them on either side of the bike and he has an excess fuel storage. The bike is also very fast, reliable, and pretty much indestructible. The seat is also decently comfortable for what it is. He also a has a gs1200 so that could be a good bike too. He has bags and hippo hands and everything for the gs so it could go forever. My yz85 would suck for the apocalypse bike!😂
