I got a Honda rebel 300 recently just because the gas prices are so high and going to get higher. I commute somewhat of a long distance so in the good weather I wanted to save on gas. Never been into motorcycles before and know hardly anything about them. Got my endorsement 2 days ago. Been seeing a lot more motorcycles on the road. I think a lot of people have the same idea as me. You probably will have significantly more enthusiasts looking at motorcycle channels in the near future.

Yam hit the nail on the head when he said that these bikes like the PanAm are not really designed with the intention of doing something like single track. Not to say they can't do it, they absolutely can but it's not ideal. But, you need a certain skill set to do it and do it well.

It's a decent sport touring bike. I owned the 2021 for 8 months with 6 of them being pushed off from one dealer to the next who allegedly had a "PA specialist" spoiler alert no one has a PA specialist. I waited 6 months for the rh control switch and was told they wouldn't cover it under warranty because it happened off road(but wait you marketed it for off road). I sold that $23,500 albatross in the dirt. On road it does well and is a sporting bike but off road it's a fire road conquerer at best....also HD treats PA owners like redheaded step children. Don't look for that Harley customer care dealer network awesomeness that you get if you buy a road glide.

You nailed the big adv purpose - 90/10, eats miles in comfort. Maybe even 95/5, and the 5 is just dirt roads. I would add that they are substitutes for sports bikes/sportscruisers/liter nakeds for those of us who want a comfortable riding position and wind protection while we hoon through life. Source: me and my Tiger 1200.
@Gismo3333
@Gismo3333 2 жыл бұрын
5-10% dirt tire is just road tires. And it is all about how good the rider is, not so much how good the bike is to go on a gravel road. I drive my 500cc scooter (about 600 pounds) on dirt/gravel roads on street scooter tires. Not any problems with that, as long as I don't do anything stupid. Stop blaming the bike, and train your self to be a better rider instead. Slow speed training is the clue to be better… Training every 1-3 days 5min do much more then 2-5 hours once a month. It is more that you blame the tires and the bike, for your own lack of skill. And also lots of training on hard breaking, on the strait, before, after and in corners. That can really save your life. But if you did not know. If you don't train on it, you are going to forget about it more and more.

Here in Asia we love our tiny-ass small displacement ADV because it's more 60/20/20, as in 60% asphalt, 20% potholes and 20% gravel. Heavy off road, probably not as good as true Dual Sports, but better than anything else.
@scottstewart5784
@scottstewart5784 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gismo3333 You are correct - a good rider can drive any motorcycle on regular dirt and gravel roads, with care. My 1200 XCa (Desert Edition) has spoke wheels, and big suspension travel and ground clearance. I chose it over the road biased option because I do a little more than gravel and dirt roads. Just a little though, and I probably could have gotten by, but when I test rode it, it felt great on the street too (17/19 tires). I can stick with stock tires (90/10), I can go 100% grip/street, or I can go more knobby. If you're saying us big ADV riders are fooling ourselves thinking we need or will use the off-raid chops of a big adv bike - I won't argue with you. Lot of posers out there, I'm half a poser myself. But the bottom line is I wanted: standard posture (no cruisers, no crotch rocketry), wind protection, all the gadgets/modes, POWER/speed, 2up, and provisions for soft bags or hard panniers. Also I'm 6'3" 190 lbs. It fits me and fits my requirements, perfectly. If I had a naked, I'd add a tail rack and a full windscreen (as I did to my first bike, a 1981 Honda CB650).

Yam, you HAVE to set up a custom ride mode, sir. I rode the first 1000 miles on mine in Road and Sport modes to get a feel for it. But once I set up a custom ride mode with stiff suspension, sport ABS and traction settings, "all the beans" fuel map and throttle response, now it's a completely different bike. I feel like it has much more raw power in my custom ride mode, and fyi the throttle is insanely twitchy in this mode. Coming from Sportsters and Buells, being a goshdarned hooligan rider, this is an awesome bike; set up the custom mode and go back out! I've been making sure to tell all my customers to do it too.

Light, not too heavy, no extra head inertia. and easy to work on as no valves, cam chains etc. I love the smell and on/off power of 2 strokes. Clutch is like a second throttle. When I rode the HD PA I didn't not have any problems the way it shifted but I put a lot of miles on old BMW airheads. The issue I noticed was engine heat. But my 22 AT DCT ADVENTURE ES has a fair amount of engine heat when the Temps are above 85 deg. I often wonder the % of rider's of big ADV bikes really ride anymore than gravel roads. And personally I can't see the need for more than 100 hp of my AT. Not being a cruiser person I was really impressed the first time I rode the PA . But I would never buy a first year bike till the bugs have been worked out.

Harley, "You want us to make a non-cruiser, right". Throws all the parts from the "non-cruiser" bin onto one bike. We can't make it too good though. (Requires a throttle job and ecm flash off production line)

Street mode is awful for any kind of performance with both the engine and suspension. I created a custom mode for the street with more of the throttle characteristics of Sport mode, and slightly stiffer suspension than Street mode, and it feels night and day more connected with good feedback.

Maybe the same guy who fried the clutch hammered the shifter? And avid big bore ADV riders say the Pan American is comparable to the BMW GS off-road, although most give the BMW the nod because of better torque at low speeds.

Devils Advocate Yam Man, Harley Boys are usually BIG BOYS... Big boys demand big toys, Spite fits the bike well, a challenging ride is a good ride in my experience. My Vn1500 classic is a big heavy slug however I ride it like I stole it, from 0 to 100 I own the mofing road, glad I ride a Kwakka but some peeps probably reckon I'm a wanna be Harley Bloke, truth be known I always wanted a Heritage softail but hey I couldnt afford the insurance on that puppy and I dont have a back up vehicle, never had an oil leak and the tourqe is what I love... I would love to ride tjat Pan Am, looks fun and hey if ot was given to me I would take it off road and probably kill it in a few days..buT Hell it would be fun..

@THEREALZENFORCE

best new not crazy powerful : KTM Duke 390, RC390, MT-07, Ninja 650 best used not crazy powerful : Ninja 400, SV 650, MT-07, Ninja 650 Best 600cc new : Tuono 660 Factory, RS 660, 2022 CBR650R (95 to 100 hp) Best sub 50hp bikes new : 2022 KTM Duke 390 and 2022 RC 390. And for low budget best bikes used : Ninja 400, SV 650, MT-07 Low budget best bikes new : new MT-07 (and new XSR700), SV 650 (enough power for every real world road situation : twisties, highways, commute to work, shopping, etc), super reliable, you can ride them for years and grow from a beginner to medium level rider to good rider into them over 10 years of ownership Also both have factory top case. The MT-07 is more modern, better screen, and has 45 liter top box as factory configuration (good for two helmets, food and drink from the grocery store, or with inner travel bag good for travel).

And if you like very low budget and retro style : Royal Enfield bikes : Interceptor 650 (more upright seating) , 650 GT (café racer), new Scram 411 (nice colors) Meteor 350 they are all 5 to 7k bikes new and some have navigation via cell phone at that low price tag.

If you're into gadgets, 150 HP engines, auto suspension, etc. then an adventure bike is not a good choice. I have a 22 cb500x, with it's measly 47 HP engine, averages 65 mph, 300 mile range and it came with only one option, ABS. Had to install a 12 socket with wiring $20 kit from Honda in addition to engine guards, pennier racks, luggage racks and wet, it still weighs 120 pounds less the Pan America wet.

Stopped by the Harley dealer in Montgomery, Al Thursday. They are full up with Harleys. They wheel maybe 40+ bikes outside & off the showroom floor every day to make room and the guy said they have about 1/3 as many out back. There was only one Pan-Am. It looked just as big and heavy as anything else in there. The Pan-Am needs to be less than 500 lbs. I think there is a serious problem with Harley Davidson's marketing/product line. I stopped by Suzuki the dealer and said I was only window shopping because I have 3 bikes and the manager joked that they only had about 3 bikes.
