How it's interpreted is usually going to be based on the political or economical leanings of the people doing the interpreting. If you take a hard look at it, while this argument doesn't work for cars, most motorcycle enthusiasts ride _so very little_ that the EVs actually won't catch up with the gas equivalent. You get that energy to charge your car from mostly coal/gas plants, maybe a few nuclear sources. We do not have the infrastructure to mass-charge millions of EV's as we have gas stations for regular cars. Charging a car takes hours, unless you get a fast charge which still takes 30-60mins. The power grid cannot sustain the sheer amount of energy to power the amount of EV's that would replace all gas cars on the road. Replacement batteries cost more than the car is worth, making it so you can't drive it more than a few years before the battery is dead and needs replaced, but why would you spend $60k on a battery for a $50k car? The range of EV's is only a couple hundred miles and that's if you're barely touching the pedal and not always in stop and go traffic. TLDR: It's unthinkable to have an EV charge as quickly as pump gas into an ICE vehicle, If you want the long and nerdy version, continue reading. I once ran some quick math to figure out what kind of power would be needed to charge an EV in the time it takes to get gas. For a 40kWh battery, to charge in like 5 min you need to feed it 480kWh, that would demand (in a 400v 3 phase system, the kind used in Europe) around 700amps per phase. Most houses in my country only have a single phase 230v 50Hz supply at their disposal. Also that feed is limited to somewhere from 5 and 45 amps depending on your needs (most have 15 to 30 amps at their disposal here). You can get 3 phase in your home here but it's not that common, and ranges from 10 to 60 amps per phase (230v live to neutral and 400v between phases).

The bike's small battery can only charge at peak for a few seconds and would average arnd 10-20% of the peak. Most homes are only wired upto 5kW load on single phase. Level 3 "ultra fast" and level 4 chargers are up to 900kw and > 900kw respectively (thought the latter might as well not exist at the moment, there are so few). Motorcycles are already tough to drive in traffic because people can't hear the motorcycles coming, hence why the engines are so loud and the bikes are in bright colors. EV bikes make ZERO noise, gee I wonder if drivers can hear them coming in their blind spots now...)

I have a bunch of bikes and the one I ride just around town the most is my 98' Ducati M900 Monster it's not the fastest most comfortable or best handling but the sound especially on the downshift, is just intoxicating . The old 2v air cooled Ducati motors make the sound bikes should make at least until you hear the dry clutch at idle (then most people think it's broken LOL). All of that is to say why would I spend Harley money on a bike that I need to trailer to get serviced because it doesn't have the range to make the trip to and from the city 130 miles round trip.

People get locked into an idea and cant remove it from their head. This is so strong and challenging to their identity at times, that you could tell them there is a cliff ahead stop now. They would not believe you and would drive over the cliff. It is one of the worst things about humanity. Its like they are programmed and anything that goes against it is bad. The world is in desperate need for rational talk and debate with facts on every topic. Time to set aside preferences and biases to make the world a better place. If we can not achieve this, the world will be doomed.

Electric motorcycles have their place. It's not a good choice as your only bike but if you have room for more than 1 then it's a great addition to the garage. The lack of noise and shifting means you can focus on your ride and not disturb nature while doing it. I had someone in a truck in the next lane ask me if my bike was electric while my visor was down and I heard him perfectly. Also, I'm never roasting chestnuts at a traffic light. Also, I whiz past cops staked out all the time. They can't hear me coming which means they never look up from their phones or computers There's many benefits!

I would like an electric motorcycle but there are some conditions. 1. It has to be a second bike. I need a regular bike for my long trips. 2. I have to have a shed with electricity at least 100 yards away from my house to store it. I can't chance my house burning down at night while I'm asleep. 3. I could maybe spend 9 thousand dollars for a new motorcycle. So someone has to give me 6 or 7 thousand more so I can buy an electric one. So I don't see any of this happening.....so .......

Great points all! I've looked at EV motorcycles and they're all pretty much jokes or $$$$$ for junk. They really have to up their game if they want to have any real sort of market. The inexpensive ones are not nearly fast enough to be safe around the speed demon vehicles that rule the roads in my area or cost way too much for the amount of bike you're buying. They don't make any sense unless you have more money than sense. I have a used low mileage EV car I got on the cheap to putter around town and commute in. I've even made a 550 mile a day drive for an unexpected vacation in it. You just have to have the right map apps, know your corridors, and do some research for routing. It definitely helps make sure I get up and stretch my legs more often than I would if I was in an ICE car. Unless the battery market changes a lot more than I expect it will, my plan is to drive it into the dirt and harvest the batteries for a home battery bank. I know it won't be worth much at all to sell as a unit at that point BUT you can't buy that amount of battery for the money I paid for the whole vehicle right now. Even if they lose some capacity that is still a lot of battery to go around.

TO wrap it up: the main problem is the technology. It develops quickly which means that older models become obsolete, but at the same time the issues of range and charging still remain. We're not there yet for the EV motorcycles to be truly competitive, except perhaps the city commuter sector and that's perhaps. Having written that, I really hope the technology moves forward and we will see great machines in the near future. It's always great to have more options, more variety and more brands to choose from PS One bike I would consider buying is, or rather used to be, Energica Ego +. Great range, a lot of issues addressed, great appeal and quality. And the sound - your neighbors would be excused for believing you've got a TIE fighter. However, Energica as the company has just bit the dust, so here we are.

I am not a motorcyclist, at least not yet. I may purchase one someday. With that in mind I think the biggest draws against EV motorcycles are range and price. A swappable battery would fix or at least improve on the range problem, just tack an extra battery like you would the gas can. You could also just make a more aerodynamic bike -- feet forward designs comes to mind, but that may not appeal to the mass market. The price problem though is a little harder to address. I don't think EV motorcycles are going to become cheaper anytime soon.

Electric bike will be very hard to design. Normally the Engine on a bike is structural which helps with frame rigidity by being a mandatory big hunk of metal is a good frame material afterall , the battery wont be structural so the frame on electric bike will be much heavier. The recent example of frame problem has been the electric rally bike that broke in half.

I'm no fan of EVs on the road, but could see benefits for some dirt riders, mostly due to no noise to annoy neighbors. A buddy that has a couple Altas says it's like cheating on nasty, snotty roots/rocks/ruts single track. If they can get the battery weight down and make it easy to swap batteries back at the truck, then I think we'll see more of them in the woods.
@RAF238thCdr842 ай бұрын
You forget how the life (not charge) of the battery deteriorates. You end up with half the capacity half way thru battery life. This is made worse if proper charge/discharge cycles arent followed.
@hcoppegard2 ай бұрын
That is not correct. Tesla S and X (which are the only long range EVs with more than 10 years of data) shows an average detoriation of 12% in 200.000 miles. Most of the detoriation happens during the first 15-20.000 miles.
@RAF238thCdr842 ай бұрын
@@hcoppegard I dont belive motorcycles will be able to use the same battery tech (for size and weight reasons) that a 4 wheeled vehicle can. From experience in battery operated lawn mowers the last couple years the batteries loose a substantial amount of capacity quickly. These are a lot closer to the size of what goes in a motorcycle than a Tesla.

1-Ev takes away that visceral feel that us riders want 2-Every little bit helps to make yourself more noticeable on 2 wheels. I'm not saying that we all need obnoxious exhausts, but taking away 95% of the sound component is a horrible idea 3-$6 gets me 130 miles and I'm in and out of the gas station in less than 5 minutes. Try that with a EV 4-If I crash and am trapped under my bike it sucks. Ya wanna know what sucks more? Crash and have the EV battery catch fire while you're trapped under it. 5-Back to range, I mostly do highway miles on the interstate. So that estimated ev range just dropped even more. 6-This is kind of shallow, but looks. Most ev bikes are flat out ugly when when compared to their ICE counterparts, and most riders do care somewhat about looks. I don't care much about how my car looks, but I want to look back and my bike when I get off of it and think "dam she's a beauty" P.s.-idk if anyone here has seen it, but Ford is stopping EV production due to lack of profit on their end.

The worst part of an ev motorcycle is the weight. For a car, you can deal with the extra weight. For a motorcycle? You now have a motor which isn't light, plus a battery which is heavy. And in a sportbike, weight is way more important than in a car

I would consider going on track, or learning a bit of stunts but im too afraid i do too much harm to the vehicle i need for my job, thus i dont. I'm living in Europe, where driving to a destination is silly close compared to USA, and we can't manage the range..... And from a standpoint of range, I'd rather buy a 155cc that goes 1000km with 2000E and look at the leafs than buy a 20000E EV and ride 130km then wait a quarter of a day to ride another 130 km.... I mean, you can get a S1000 XR or a 1250 GS or GSA at 20000E .....brand new, and a Hayabusa is cheaper .......just to put things into perspective.....

I agree with ya but there are few important reasons why ev makes more sense to a whole lotta people 1) Ev bikes may not be sound like a great ideal as enthusiast ,but for commuters esp in developing countries its a boon . Electricity is still cheaper than gas by a huge margin and low to nil maintenance just adds to the perks ! Electric bikes tbh is meh buy electric scooters are hella fun , u get more storage and its faster than gas counterparts which all makes it the perfect city vehicles ! 2 ) Range anxiety can a easy fix with unified battery swapping system . Which not only is faster negates the the battery life issues for the owners . 3 ) Ev and ev battery tech is comparatively much newer tech and give 10-15 years to mature . Currently we have solid state battries which are more energy dense and and there are new battery design doesn't require rare earth metals ! 4)Evs in america are just highly over complicated capitalised bullshit. Just because uses ev power train doesn't mean it should have a fucking tablet for controls with wifi ,netflix and a playstation! And pitifully this also the case now with ice cars as well . Companies just putting gimmicky non repairable garbage as features isn't an ev only issue ! . 5) Evs will get easy to repair as the tech gey more common ! But still ,say u dont see even an enthusiast messing around a Ducati v4 do ya ? 2 stroke hella ya but 4 strokes especially with multi cylinders nahh . Somethings are just too complicated for end users to thinkle with . 6 ) Evs will get more character as the tech matures. The first ice bikes where no fun and all looked the same for good 30 years ! Waiting untill they fit in denser batteries that with superconductors that can be equivalent to forced induction or multu geared bikes , motor tuning by increasing base voltage ! Or heck different presets for different ridding styles just like a ecu tune or riding modes . And evs are way cheaper in other side of world , check out ola or ultraviolette and what they are doing For the price tag !

I'm afraid that in the end there will definitely be demand in markets that are large in volume or still growing. The two biggest motorcycle markets have to buy and import oil but they can generate their own electricity, it was never just about emissions... The US and Europe may be exclusive markets but they are relatively small and stagnant compared to Asia, and let's not forget Africa which has the potential to grow...
