All of the motorcycles in your past did something you remember fondly, and something that irritated you. Newness is a really fun phase, followed by a growing desire to improve, and then upgrade. Nothing wrong with electric. I built a 38 mph tops 48v 1000 watt hub motor ebike 11 years ago. I used 4 12v sla batteries. I got tired of buying new batteries so instead of buying a 700 dollar lithium battery from China I bought a 150cc scooter. It has a CVT automatic transmission, better range, power and is way faster to fuel up instead of charging batteries for 5 hours. If the ebike is all you need stick with it. I suggest you try out some small engines from 50cc to 125 to 150 up before deciding on a gas bike if you want to upgrade.

Yammie. Here's a life-saver for YOU: It's called - "THE TWO SECOND RULE" In dry/good conditions try to keep at least a 2 second gap from the vehicle in front - key to this is watching for the back of the vehicle in front crossing/passing a fixed marker ie. the different asphalt 0:21 & timing how long it takes for you to cross/pass that same place. > 0:22 You're way too close to the back end of something that looks like a small wall >I, it seriously impedes your view/options & if that thing had slowed suddenly, I don't know what you weigh but you faceplant that much metal & I'll wager they wouldn't even feel it. Saying "Only a fool breaks the two second rule" aloud takes around 2 seconds - now you know - Ride safe.

Another good reason to buy a good used bike as a beginner - there's a good chance that you are only going to figure out what you might like once you start riding. And it might take a few bikes to find the one you really like.

And you'll probably drop it. Get something cheap you don't care too much about scratching up - or in many cases comes pre-scratched, thus you don't care at all. This is even more the case if you're concerned about money - don't save up for the dream bike, just buy whatever you can afford right now.

I knew an old Harley guy who always used to say, "it doesn't matter what you ride, just ride." I had a Honda Rebel 250 as my first bike for a couple years, but I sold it a couple years ago for financial reasons. I promised myself I would get another bike when I finished paying off my car, and I had my heart set on a Honda Rebel 500. Now I have a better job and my car will be paid off in 2 more payments, so it's time to get back into riding; unfortunately, Honda Rebel 500s are hard to find right now, and the dealership sold the used one they had the day before I was able to go look at it. I was bummed because I didn't want to wait for another one to show up, and I didn't want to buy a brand new one because they're more expensive and I'm still a beginner rider. So, when the dealer showed me a 2016 Yamaha V Star 650 Custom with only 6k miles, I sat on it and debated if I should get it. I drove 15 minutes to another dealer to sit on a Rebel 500, and I wasn't as instantly in love as I thought I'd be. The V Star is more comfortable. It's heavier though, and I'm only 5'2" so that worried me, but the first time I was ever on a motorcycle was a 2002 V Star 650 my dad got when I was in 3rd grade, and they didn't change much between 2002 and 2016. I got to ride my dad's old V Star with my cousin a few years ago shortly after I got my Rebel 250, and I had a lot of fun on that old 650. So, I decided to go for the 2016 V Star 650. It's a great deal and it's available now, and if I don't love it after a couple years, then I can sell it and get a different bike. I wasted too much time agonizing over the Rebel 500 vs the V Star, mentally going over all the specs and the features the older bike is missing, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what I ride, I just need to get back on.

Thanks for this! I’m almost 30 and only drove 50cc scooters for few years in my life, I always wanted a speed bike, but I’m too scared to sit on 600cc or 1000cc, everyone told me since I have experience I should get at least 600cc because I’m mature enough to control the throttle, but honestly I don’t need such a big bike, especially not for a first manual, so I liked the Yamaha YZF R125 and I got a second hand one, never regreted it and has enough power for me to enjoy for few years! A lot of local forum users told me I’m an idiot, but I really don’t care and love my bike 😊

For most of us, dreaming is a very important (and enjoyable) aspect of buying a bike. To Yammie's point, it doesn't really matter which bike you buy, but if you enjoy researching what you want, by all means, indulge yourself, and be glad bike manufacturers haven't managed to charge you for that enjoyment.

I've taken dozens of kids in the last 40-50 years to their motorcycle driving test. The best bikes to take the test on are smaller bikes ( 175 - 250 cc ). In NYS you have to do 2 left turn circles , 2 right turn circles , and 2 figure eights without your feet touching the road. the trick is to do those circles in 2nd gear , the bike will jerk less than if it was in 1st gear.
@DivergentDroid3 жыл бұрын
In Louisiana you only have to do figure eights to pass the skills test. I'm gonna take mine on my 150cc scooter. I can't take an MSF course til next year cus they are already over for this year.

Hey from the UK, passed my full A license last month, got my payslip and pulled the trigger on a second hand honda cb650f. Picked it up on Friday, and have already covered 500 miles, I frickin love it, rode through torrential rain storms, lovely sunshine and everything inbetween. As you say yams, just swing a leg over, get out and ride.

I already know what it's gonna be, but I have to wait at least 6 months or so until I can get my license, so I keep looking around anyway. (Thanks covid) But yeah the Honda cb650r will be my first bike after that we'll see. I'm a little older and generally not an aggressive driver, so I think I'll be okay. (And one of my local riding schools uses them as well)
@camgere3 жыл бұрын
Aggressive riding is really dangerous. Driving in traffic is the next most dangerous thing. Even after decades of riding I still have people make left turns in front of me with little room. If you don't like motorcycles, it is easy to ignore them. You do develop a "spidey-sense" for bad drivers. Keith Code's "Twist of the Wrist" is still an excellent introduction to technique. While there is physics behind much of his techniques, he totally ignores it. Since you have to accept it on faith, use what works.

Totally agree! I bought my first bike in 1979, a two-stroke Suzuki GT-250 from a guy in the barracks for $400. All the plastic pieces were faded and the seat was ripped, but I needed wheels. Man, I rode that thing all over the San Diego area with my girlfriend on the back a lot of the time and had a BLAST! Sold it to someone else for the same $400 a year and half later.

As someone who just bought my first motorcycle last year, I'm happy I did some research. But ultimately seat time and practice is the most important. I got my license first then I researched bikes and got my Ninja 650 which I'm super happy with as a beginner bike thats suitable for highway riding too. I did a bit of research on gear but didn't contemplate too much. I knew I just needed something to get me on the bike and get some seat time while I learn

I've been riding the cb500f for 3 years now. If you want a bike which is enough for everything and are not planning on racing 600' or 1000' on the highway you'll be very happy with the thing. I recommend getting a not too loud muffler, like the Mivv GP (got mine new for ~280€). I can't speak for the cbr itself, but my cbf has been the greatest thing ever. Never had electronical or mechenical issues, pretty fuel efficient. With the Mivv the bike does some amazing grugles going off the gas.

Eventually in a year or year and a half I will get my license and buy a Ninja Kawasaki (probably 400 cc). I was interested in bikes since I was younger but I didn't have the resources for it. Nowadays I can do it, but I definitely will do it because I just want to ride more freely (not competing at all, because I value my life) just to have a means for work transportation and fun times. Good vibes here from San Francisco, California.
