I like this educational style of video that shows the different varieties in detail. If you have an interest in filming more like this, winter squash varieties could be a good topic. I haven't had the opportunity to try yams, but I get 4 or 5 varieties of sweet potatoes from my favorite farmers market.

@@SweetPotatoSoul Thank you so much for clarifying that "in the USA" both Yams and Sweet Potatos are actually Sweet Potatoes. This confirms my belief that the white looking ones on the inside are in fact Sweet Potatoes, and in all actuality, correcting me (thanks for the African Yam story), orange "Yams" are truly Sweet Potatoes. This answers CostCo calling the orange ones "Sweet Potatoes." I want to buy your book. I LOVE SWEET POTATOES and would Love to try a real Yam (unless your daughter is correct that they don't taste good LoL).

What a nice video. Very informative. Regarding sweet potatoes, my wife always makes candied sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving. That dish and sweet potato pie are essential for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, the humble baked sweet potato helped me through college. All you need is foil, a toaster oven, and a sweet potato. A filling (if simple) meal for a buck fifty at most.

Thank you SO much for clarifying this. I am Nigerian and grew up eating yams, I loved fried yams with fried plantains topped with fried egg and tomato stew (Americans would call it sauce). I also liked yam porridge. And one of my favorite memories was when my grandmother visited and would only pound yam for me and her, while everyone just ate regular garri (fried and dried cassava made into a paste) with the soup. I didn’t like Egusi soup though, I liked okro soup, orah soup and vegetable soup. We also ate sweet potato, which we called sweet potato. When I moved here and saw yams that looked like sweet potatoes, I thought there was a whole nother tuber in the US called yams. So in my mind there were American “yams,” Nigerian yams and also sweet potato. 😅 I was today years old when I learned from your video that American “yams” are just sweet potatoes! 😅😂

I’m from SoCal, (I know you were here for a while) and sweet potatoes are called sweet potatoes. Certain stores will label them sweet potatoes/yams. But for the most part we call em sweet potatoes. And some folks call em candied yams after they’ve cooked the sweet potatoes😁 But thanks for this great informative video🤗

As a Nigerian, lemme say,in this part of the world, that mistake (potatoes misnamed as yams) doesn't happen.I'm stoked that you've tried and like egusi(and pronounce the word properly too😊).Foofoo does not refer to pounded yam only,in fact,we generally refer to it as that:pounded yam.We call cooked pounded cassava foofoo, along with other cooked pounded starchy foods,(though these days, people have annoyingly and incorrectly started calling them "swallows",a translation of the various local expressions for them)and eat them with what we call soups--egusi is one of them--which are NOTHING like what the western world calls soup of course.Plus,we don't salt yam after it's cooked and don't eat it by itself, that's kinda bland:there would be a (usually herby and spicy)sauce to go with it separately(sort of like a dip) or which it'd be cooked in(yam porridge).Your li'l girl was right to refuse it as is 😅.

As a Haitian American who grew up with both (and they all have different creole names) growing up it was so confusing because most other Americans didn’t know what to call them and I didn’t know what to call real yams in English without having someone think I was talking about sweet potatoes 😂 On top of that we’d often shop in Spanish-speaking grocery stores which had other names which varied depending on which Caribbean country the shore was catering to 😂😂😂 what a nomenclative disaster! Thank you for this very informative and interesting video! I find it very credible, and am a bit disappointed in myself for living in a false reality for more than 60 years. The only kind of sweet potato I ever saw until I moved out of my parent's house was canned "yams" which are quite horrible now that I look back on them. My wife and I eat baked FRESH sweet potatoes frequently. We will stop calling any of the yams. BTW, genuine yams imported from Ghana or other African nations are quite expensive. They're available on Amazon.

My girlfriend and I have been cooking up Japanese yams lately. But after watching this I’m convinced they are just another variety of sweet potato. However we dice them up and throw them in a cast iron skillet with fresh bacon grease. Then we add bone broth and let the broth boil down in to the yams/potatoes along with the bacon grease. Then we top it off with some truffle salt and occasionally add some spiced pepper. Great video, thanks for making it! 😎

I’m Filipino and Purple Yam or Ube is very ubiquitous in our cuisine. We make desserts, hot and cold, out of it. Here in North America, they substitute Ube with purple sweet potato and some even call it Ube which is totally different in looks and taste. I just use grated purple yams in the frozen section of the Chinese grocery. I have yet to try White or yellow yams though.
