I started actively observing the political process when I was nine years old, about 25 years ago. Never have I witnessed a politician with a more reasonable, accurate or deeper analysis of our situation than Mr Varoufakis, nor have I come across anyone before, proposing a political path so close to what I think is necessary, realistic and the right thing to do. I have been a supporter of "Die Linke" for some time now, in order to back the working class who is being squeezed by the few, and in order to preserve the planet getting ruined for the greed of the few. Not because I felt "politically at home" at "Die Linke", but there was simply no other party that even came close. DiEM25 changed that. Thanks! There is a vote, and a membership coming in...

You can get involved in Diem25-like movements in your part of the world and form alliances. The idea is to build a transnational organization. That's the only way to achieve anything in the modern world. Nation state politics is dead. Diem25 is focused in Europe but the whole philosophy necessitates it expand and converge with similar movements in the US, Australia, wherever.

@@Camcolito 1. Any movement needs its visionary instigator. We do not yet have one here ... and *I* am not the one for that role! I'll look around, though. 2. But the populous have to be ready to embrace such a movement through deep dissatisfsction with the status quo. Australia is not yet as desperate as Europe due to comfy materialism and far less turmoil. 3. A 2 party system is still very strong here. There IS a small and growing rise in independent MPs. Maybe in a decade, after Europe has (hopefully successfully) transformed, Australia might follow suit. All the wondrous thinking Yannis talks is considered crazy stuff at present down here. Also, Australia is more politically conservative than Europe. So all up, I hold little hope for the near to medium term future.

@costage He's a great economist, he knows his stuff, though - he's an ace I'd say. But, lately, he engages in heavy platitudes, appeals to the lowest common denominator and, most notably, he never fails to mention those evil Nazis, fascists, racists, xenophobes and what have you, which works on the post-WW2 indoctrinated masses. He still hasn't figured out that those "racists and xenophobes" aren't so because of economy or poverty, but because of principles, which really shows that he doesn't know the kind of people the nations - NATIONS! - of Europe are. And how could he by zooming through the streets on a motorbike, shilling for climate change - a money hungry, globalist lobby? As for populism, there isn't anything inherently wrong about it, just that he's engaged in the same tactics people he criticizes are engaged in. If he stuck to the technical aspects of macro economy, he would've garnered more support also from the right, those evil "xenophobes." His movement, DiEM25, touts a lot of this new-age, neo-liberal lingo, like open borders, feminism, equality (this one always makes me laugh) and all that crap, it most definitely smells a lot like Open Society Foundation - just think of all the necessary resources that go into the public conferences, movement campaigns, public relations, personnel employment, co-hosting, space for rent and so on. I doubt he does it from his own wallet, but I'm sure his heart is in the right place, although, misguided; he's "un-apologetically Marxist" after all (his words).

And has SEVERELY hampered passing on information via latest laws on Tim Berners- Lee opposed Article 11 + 13 of so-,called 'copyrite law' allowing film 2 only b shared by wealthy corps (memes r allowed) so, crucially, a political commentator exposing hypocrisy, via film, of politicians displaying contradictory views 2 yrs apart (usually pre and post power) will have 2 pay a lot, risk fines and/or b unable 2 play such clips. I choose commentators, because of context, judicious choice of clips and, crucially, a decent amount of content surrounding such statements eg a 1 minute clip rarely enough. This man cares about himself and no one else. His whole tactic was to not have one but try to build a brand around himself and capitalize it later on. He closed the banks and people would stand in the queue to withdraw with a limit of 40 euro but he "didn't think its appropriate for him as finance minister to do that". His whole interest was about portraying a personal brand image on TV wearing leather jackets, lifted jacket collars and bullshit people all over the board - when he wasn't trying to enforce a tutoring of his "ideas" on them. He is a moron, and one of gigantic proportions. Just like his ego. He has no idea about real life whatsoever because he enjoys living in his bubble where he's the center of the universe and God among peasants. He is completely ignorant, one with studies - a charming bullshitter for those who enjoy consuming such content. I admire you having such views. i don't agree with you.... he has an ego.... yes he wears leather jackets and rides a bike....yes. he can appear and could be ignorant.... yes all that. ....but he was all that, way back then before this crisis, i remember well during his time that he spend at sydney university. same man....he didn't just change, just for that crisis to create the image that you are talking about. ....he was like that way beforehand, i can assure you. and he didn't write greek history and could never have known or predicted his fate with the dealings that he had and met. he never planned or ever wanted to become greece's financial minister anyhow. it was tsipras who approached him to become his financial minister, with the view and the plan between themselves to never yield or compromise greece's position...no matter what. the plan was never to borrow again to pay off greek debts, something which should have happened 30 years ago anyway. this was the plan which they both agreed and they both went into. he was then betrayed by tsipras because allegedly, tsipras was pressured by the european union and given the ultimatum to get rid of him (varoufakis) or suffer the closure of the greek banks. something the european union (not varoufakis) did anyway to the greek banks and something that varoufakis did not want. varoufakis could never had all this planned beforehand as you say only to act accordingly and create his brand....sorry but your story sounds somewhat delusional.

Apparently one with studies and raised up in a upper class family, judging from the tone of your posts. Yes, I still do believe, and I used to even when it was happening, that A. Papandreou was the worst politician ever. But Tsipras now has taken the throne; and it was an easy task for him. I also believe that Baroufakis is highly toxic, regardless if some of his thoughts may make sense to some. He is pure toxic, in my humble opinion, and I am amazed how 30+ percent voted for a complete moron and 3+ percent voted for a non moron but highly toxic person. I guess I will continue having that area of Europe as exclusively recreational and avoid dealing with a big percentage of its inhabitants who ruin it for the rest of us. It’s not easy but even with a good leader they aren’t going to be enough with out the groundwork of local communities and those local communities joining the other communities. I’m sure there’s an Australian leader that can take the role, but the support needs to be there for them to do so and that starts with you. We all need to take these causes upon ourselves, we can’t wait for others to do it for us

@@Sam._. We have politicians, on both sides of the fence with their heads so far up their arses the don't know what is happening. They are responding to those that support them financially and at their beck and call. Our economy is a giant bubble, ready to burst, we have no clue about what is happening with the environment despite many drought / flood events recently, despite our own agencies warnings. The muppets in Canberra ignore all expert advice - the governments own experts and they treat the populations' concerns with disdain. We are a disaster in the making Sam.

I live in the US, and yes I am slightly aware that Australian politics are similarly twisted like the US’s is, but right now an activist progressive politician Bernie Sanders is running. He’s not just clear the front runner for one of our two parties in the presidential election, but right now it looks like the right wing isn’t going to do very well when the final election happens. If this can be done in the US, one of the most disgustingly corrupt governments in the western world, then it can done in Australia.

@Anagha Shyham. Haven't you heard Yanis, saying we need a transformation? The 19th century style is in sync with the consciousness of that time, in people. We're moving toward a less violent, less destructive way of solving things now. Let the dead bury the dead and let the living live for the living. Yanis is alive! Nothing wrong with being a rebel without a cause, but does it pay off, helpful?

How satisfying to listen to this Mercurial speaker. It gives me hope that there are still wise people who care about everyone. An extremely simple surefire way of fixing this ailing world economic setup would be to give "money" a limited lifespan of say 5 - 7 years in which it progressively looses all its value... and that would be cereal grains ! Nature provided the perfect setup (Rev. of St. John 6:6 ; a seed crystal) Talk about the genius of such insight... and if this makes sense to you go and 'read' Dr Rudolf Steiner [PhD Phil] for mountains of such wisdom & insight on any subject. rsarchive.org/lectures

Oh please enough with this crap. There are 160 countries in the world that are out of the EU. Does that mean that they have to obey the USA and China ? International relationships don't work like that. Vietnam has the GDP the size of Romania and decided to ban Glyphosate last month. They were able to do it because they are a self-governing country. Many countries including France wanted to do the exact ame thing but couldn't because they had to obey the EU. The EU IS the problem not the solution.

I like his idealism but the idea that you can reform the undemocratic monolith of the EU is just so naive. You will never stop the project as it stands. It is outlined in the Four President's Report (you can read it online) : Capital Markets Union, then banking union, a manufactured new economic crisis and then fiscal consolidation. Finally, through these 'fixes' EU Law will reign supreme and individual sovereignty will be abolished.

Money is simply numbers. Numbers on screens and numbers on paper. But humans have been generationally conditioned to think these numbers are so special...and yet there just numbers. For economies to work numbers~ have to continuously flow~ but we've allowed the system to be designed so they Pile up! and this design flaw causes the system to crash. Everything we know about life requires flow: blood, chemistry, oxygen etc. But this is not the way the monetary systems of the world are designed! 1)We allow Banks to create the Publics currency as a Debt 2) We give them the power to Allocate this where they want. 3) we allow them to charge a compounding rental fee(interest) for money they create from thin air! Money begins in Banks and returns to banks, flows in circuits they choose, and money goes to money because interest grows exponentially. This amounts to a bad design. Money must flow like electricity or water we need a system based on life. Look up talks by Richard Werner, Ben Dyson, Bernard Litaer.

Jobs are harder to find pressure on people no money. Wages are very low in most European countries. People are suffering now as I speak. We have to stop all this bloody rhetoric and getting on with finding solutions now before we end up like the 1930s which was the Americans fault. The whole world suffered for years but president Roosevelt did amazing things in America to help people suffering. A very wonderful president.

Dalibor Bartoš , Germany haw always been making products of excellent quality but the introduction of the Euro helped Germany overcome the re-unification crisis and go on to become the export powerhouse it is today. The reason for that is the Euro itself - it's a currency that, because of the southern Europe countries also adopting it, is quite low in parity compared to what the Deutsche Mark was and would have been today. This makes German products far more competitive than they ever were! It is in the national interest of Germany that the crisis in Europe is kept simmering because this keeps the Euro relatively weak.
