Charlie used to come to the Angelus house in Hudson Florida. It's a small town and the Angelus House is a facility for mentally and physically handicapped people who can't live on their own. He would put on concerts around the 4th of July to raise money for them

​@@MonsterGaming-rh7sb Per interviews with Charlie Daniels, Johnny's part actually carries a melodic tune and is more technically difficult, where the devil's part is "just a bunch of noise" that doesn't actually require much skill. The bet was about ability, so Johnny was the winner. (Plus if you listen back half the devil's section was just the demons playing backup without him even fiddling at all.)

@@Auxana13 right, and that's the thing. I'm not saying the devil played better fiddle than Johnny, just that I think it sounded better. To be fair, this is partially personal preference, I tend to like hard rock and heavy metal after all. Plus like I said, he had help. (Edit) Also, if they legitimately said the "devil's part was just a bunch of noise" then that's hilarious because it was easily my favorite part of the song. ^.^

~ Though the Stones made a lot of good records, I wouldn't cross the street to see them live. Saw Charlie Daniels at the Fayette County Fairground (Pennsylvania) in '94, and it was an _excellent_ show. Charlie Daniels Band was one of the best.

A lot of the things Johnny was singing were tropes in old bluegrass/country music. What you said about how fast he was playing, it was common for others trying to play this to end up breaking their strings

One of the things I never got with this song is how Johnny beats the devil; I used to think the devil's bit was better, because of the weird way he plays, but even the Devil knows he's beat by solid good music played well, innovation be damned, structure and purity beats flash-in-the-pan ... there's a further clue in the vocals before Johnny's bit: '"Fire on the Mountain" run boys, run; The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun; Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough; Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.' Two songs are referenced here: 'Fire on the Mountain' and 'House of the Rising Sun' both about ruination brought on by chasing the bigger better deal and pleasure ... and then the two most curious lines, which are near impossible to pick up without looking up the lyrics: one referencing wholesome rural pastoral life, and the other a polite social exchange between youngers and elders regarding social bounderies and navigating around the possibilities of simple pleasure and pain bounded by a social setting. He, and therefore his music, is unbeatable due to its grounding in something greater than gold. You get the feeling that the golden fiddle is meaningless to him; he would have taken the bet over whatever was offered, or nothing at all, and still won. In fact, the only danger to Johnny is in accepting the golden fiddle; I like to think he left it there and went home for grits and a little moonshine. This is also probably the Devil's real game: lose, and destroy the wholesome country lad with the winnings.
