Yanmar 1GM, 1GM10 water pump seals replacement

If your water pump is dripping from the tell tale holes of the pump body, you need to replace the 2 seals. This video shows you how to do this relatively easy job

Fantastic demo. I just did the replacement and it worked like a charm. The only difference is I was scared to clean the volute with a screwdriver as you did. I used a brass rod instead. Thank you for sharing.

Great tutorial, just worth mentioning though that there are two kinds of water seal that could potentially be needed depending on the age of the engine - 124240-91450 or 128170-42120. The first part number is a single lip seal, the latter double lip. Functionally the same but big difference in how easy they are to fit!

Check the pump shaft for a wear grove from the lip on the seal. If your thumb nail catches as you slide it across the SS shaft it replace the shaft..

Great video! I was wondering if you can remove the pump without pumping out the oil out of the engine. I thought it was all oil behind the inner gasket.

I have never serviced anything of this kind before, so it is much appreciated to have someone showing how it is done. Regarding the lubrication of the pump: which kind of oil do you use. I only have some PFTE based oil, will that work?

Thank you for the reply. I just broke the water seal by hammering on it with a with a socket. The seals seems way too big for the hole and too stiff to yield. Off to buy another one ..

No, you do not need to drain the oil!

Hi I have removed the old seals. But for the life of me I can't get the new smaller one in. Despite watching your video. It does have a small spring type washer in should that be there? Regards Barry

Hi, I see a Cam mentioned on the schematic; my pump does not have this, whats the significance.

The seals don’t really pop out. If they are old they fall apart.

Do you have any extra tips on getting the water seal in place? I think the hole looks really small and the seal feels like it is made of semi hard plastic, rather than rubber.

The trick is to make sure the internal housing is completely clean and smooth, then use the biggest socket that will fit so that it applies pressure to just the shoulder of the seal, then attempt to tap on it as squarely as possible.

Thanks. Finally got it resolved. My problem was that I didn't clean out the outer rim of the old seal. That made the hole look really small. :-)

I can't remember exactly how, but I think it was judicious use of a flat blade screwdriver, pliers and whatever other tool came to hand!

How to remove the old seal was a nightmare and unfortunately it is not shown on the video. Conclusion dont try this at home ...just don't do it.
