The reason there's a few months between the last visit to the Xianzhou is not only because of Penacony. We had to deal with a Giant Sting with Argenti, survive Ruan Mei's agenda with the Swarm, and also help Asta, Screwllum, and Dr. Ratio with Duke Inferno on the Space Station

Jiaoqiu lets his traumas guide him, Yanqing wants to fight them, Yunli reforged them into a sense of purpose and Dan Heng is trying to ignore them. There is no “correct way” to deal with your traumas, but all the different avenues are explored in this chapter. When we had the option to note how Penacony has traumatised us, I expected it to be played off as a joke. Instead, the first thing we do when we land on the Luofu is check if Yanqing hasn’t been subverted by a hostile force. That is the definition of behaviour born from repeated traumatic experiences. We go somewhere, meet a person that we spend the first few hours with, and then get betrayed by them. Jarillo VI, if you don’t count Sampo (who ditched us), the Luofu, our return to Jarillo, Ruan Mei is arguably the antagonist of the Herta Space Station continuance, and the first main player we properly meet in Penacony is Aventurine. We can’t catch a goddamn break, and it shows. Agency is literally taken away from us to show that *the trailblazer* is learning from their mistakes.

answering mina why vidyadharas have bellybuttons: dinosaurs and birds have bellybuttons. dragons are based off dinosaurs (or their fossils were regarded as dragon bones by MANY cultures, and dragons are in fact one of the most widespread lores of earth with the Diluve), therefore dragons are non-avian dinosaurs. vidyadhara are dragon descendants, therefore they should keep their draconic bellybutton logic. the umbilical cord in avian dinosaurs (aka birds) functions p much as the ones in the mammals, for absorbing nutrients for the developing fetus out of the amniotic fluid and yolk (hence why eggs are so nutritious). i know this bc my son is obsessed with dinosaurs and i had to answer MUCH more complex questions about dinosaur birth, phylogenetics and genetics, on top of plain old 'where can i see their bones'. he has been to the museum. it has not been enough. see yall in jurassic park once this kid graduates college i guess.

I loved this quest. After the… riveting events of penacony, a slower quest was in order. And the main theme of traumas and grudges really made it stick together. Yanqing’s monologue about how the memories of fighting Jingliu impacted his life is a suprisingly good analysis of how events can be traumatic even if we didn’t loose something tangible. Facing Jingliu put Yanqing on a fast track to adulthood, and this train has no brakes. And later when Jiaoqiu used Hoolay’s grudge against Jingliu, that’s an example of what happens when you don’t self-reflect like Yanqing did. There’s also a contrast between Yunli and Yanqing, Yunli’s father is responsible for the deaths of many people (and I think her parents died?), but she already learned to live with the idea that the people she cares about may leave her at any moment. That’s why she’s so blunt. Contrast her catlike personality to Yanqing’s golden retriever energy, a guy that follows the stereotypical long life species way of thinking. He is someone who had the wind ripped from his sails, and he’s still learning to reajust. And Yunli isn’t being an ass just because she likes to, but also because she relate on a deeper level with someone so consumed by doubt.
