This Is What Happens When You Just Leave Them Alone

In this bee removal video, I head down to Birmingham, Alabama to remove a hive of bees in a column of a house. The homeowner had only noticed the bees for the past few weeks. They were prepping the house to sell and found them. Gratefully they found me and gave us a chance to see them upclose and personal and rehome them safely.
Many have seen some of my videos where I collect swarms hanging in trees and ask, why not just leave them alone. Bees prefer an environment in side of something wood. Trees are the best for them but when not available they find the next best thing. In this case, the porch column. At some point, some kinda critter made a hole in the wood that opened up the internal void and the bees found it. Based on their numbers and the color of the comb ( the darker the comb, the longer they've been there) they had been established a few months.
Thankfully they were in a great mood. Honeybees can and will sting. mostly as a last defense but they can for any reason. Being up on that ladder, I was very glad they were nice.
My goal for this channel is to share that not all honeybees are "killer bees" I am blessed to not have that genetic in my area or known to be in my state. I deal basically with European Genetics and they are not as aggressive but can be very defensive sometimes. SO PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I have worked with bees for about 10 years and was trained by one of the best bee removers in the country.
Over time, honey bee colonies grow larger. As they do, their overall numbers grow also. Catching an infestation and removing them professionally is the best answer. If a colony ever dies, they leave behind large amounts of honey that can attract other critters such as roaches, beetles and moths. This could lead to a large mess when they try to break into the honey causing it to seep through the voids and into the home.

Aloha from Oahu!! They say there's always moon shine in Kentucky? Well there's always sunshine in Hawaii!😜 And with all the flowers you have nectar/honey. Bees only need 5/16" passage for the queen to walk right in and set up a brood area to lay her eggs at. It only takes a few weeks of their activities to be all set to have a functional hive. In the first few days of comb building, these combs are too delicate to be useful to transfer to a hive, so old comb is used from another hive's efforts and the capture can proceed. In my first 5 years, no less than 500 such captures were successfully done.

My boyfriend recently saved a bee from downing in our pool, she crawled right up on his hand and cleaned herself and hung out while flapping her wings dry for a good five minutes before buzzing away. It was really neat. Love your videos!

Ain't nothing, had one on me for nearly an hour, made a few photos of it, as well as videos, then again, was around autumn, pretty cold and whatnot, so no clue. Maybe soaked in for a while, as even the fur part of it was wet. However, was pretty insightful and interesting. Took flight after a few minutrs after I dropped em, when trying to put them down on a sunny spot.

I was always “afraid” of bees. But as I’ve gotten old and educated my self a little I have come to appreciate them. I have watched enough of your video’s that I have learned to try and remain calm. I made a little hive for some mason bees about 3 yrs ago. And they keep using it. And now if i am trimming flower or stuff in the garden i will actually just take the bee off what I am cutting and put them on the next flower with no issues. Because of “someones” video’s I know find my self talking too the bees when i am doing work around them.

Right now on my one flower I have “little bees”, bumble bees, and bumble bees with a red butt on it. And I could go cut some for my wife and put them on the table and the bees would almost apologize for being in the way. They are all so busy working right now.

Been beekeeping for 11 years, people don’t realize what a challenge it is to keep them healthy. Not a get rich hobby, but amazingly rewarding. I figured with my wife doing 50% of the work we make maybe.50 cents an hour each.

I'm a little curious about starting to Beekeep myself. Got a big farmhouse with ample room that is allowed by law to have hives. What are the main priorities of beekeeping for a starter.

@@EyePatchGuy88 best bet is to find a local apiary group in your area. Like plants, your immediate locale will have differences for keeping them healthy. For example, if you are in the pacific northwest, personally, I'd make sure my hives were close enough to keep a good eye on, but far enough away that if they are attacked by hornets, your immediate living area doesn't become part of the battleground. With what appears to be a multitude surplus of Asian Giant Hornet hives up there, I'm frankly worried that the hornets will eventually climatize to the North American weather and spread even to the Atlantic North East.

Yeah I remember playing and just catching bees when I was little. They actually rarely sting anyone, even when grabbed. Wasps on the other hand, chased me and my friends like half a mile and one stung me and it wasn't fun. (and no, while we were stupid kids, didn't poke wasp nest for fun, someone throw a rock and accidentally disturbed one. This was in Australia so probably super wasps)

i play with wasps , bees, spiders , moths you name it. As i say be intentionally gentle. Never got stung by wasps. Well once as a kid but that was mostly accidental,high speed wind + me being in the way.

Smell is a big thing with bees. I think they can actually smell fear. If so they may encourage the fear in hopes of driving away the danger to their hive.

You’re definitely brave. I got stung by a bee when I was two years old. I wasn’t allergic, but I was in pain. As a result, just the sight of a bee (or even a wasp) freaks me out. Kudos to you, Yappy and your crew.

I can't stop watching these videos, they're fascinating. I had a swarm like this in my house last summer & just left them alone. some years ago I used to get so anxious around bees that I'd have a panic attack. I've since mellowed a lot about it but man, this guy is just picking up clumps of bees with his hands like he's mixing salad. Another great video. I love it when you 'negotiate' with them. Questions - When looking for the queen, since they all gather around her, do you start looking at the clumps of bees, or is it just a matter of looking and seeing her walking around? It looks like you have to remove a few layers of bees just to find her. Next, once you put the queen in the box, how long do you leave it so the rest of the bees have time to get in there. Lastly, once you pick up the box to take them away, what do you do about any stragglers? Once you leave, they're on their own?

She's never stationary. I.just have to watch for her. I leave her in the cage about 3 days and generally, I pick the bees up after dark when they are all in the hive.

I know the answer to a couple of these! The vacuum is specially built for the bees, they're sturdy little creatures whose terminal velocity doesn't hurt them, and the suction is slight enough that it doesn't suck them up until they're practically in the tube. The hive is sent to a bee sanctuary or the like after removal, they're just rehomed, not harmed at all ^^. Scooping the bees at the start helps the person get an idea of how calm a hive they are, and sometimes it helps find the queen as well rather than indiscriminately sucking them up.

I always try to keep calm around bees, even trying to help them when I see lone ones that seem in a bit of a predicament, but I've never had the confidence to touch or pick them up with my bare hands. Wish I could join you on a job like this to try and get that out my system, to see how a hive reacts first hand would make things so much easier.

No, I don't ever recall his destroying a colony because it's mean. The nasty ("Africanized") bees are limited to Florida. If a colony is bad tempered, just replace the queen.

Wow. I have always been deathly afraid of bees even though I love what they do and want to save them. I just found your channel and really enjoyed watching your expertise. Keep on keeping these precious bees safe. Up here in Canada we are losing a lot of our bee population due to various reasons.

I'm not brave enough to work with bees but I sure do appreciate them and I appreciate the work you do. Because you provide this service it means that nuisance bees don't get destroyed and people don't get hurt. What is the lifespan of a normal honeybee? How about the lifespan of the queen? Do they live longer if they are kept or wild or does it matter?

Yappy I love your bee removal videos most.. would like to see follow-up video with where you place them after you've rescued them last thing it's amazing how you seem to always know where the Queen bee 🐝 is just from looking at how the bee's are reacting

I love how gentle he is and how he talks to them like each one is special. I know, it's in his best interest to be gentle. Watching his videos has helped me calm the fear of bees that I grew up with. Now when I see them I just think of them doing their job instead of assuming they're going to come after me.

@@lisadioguardi5742 I'm usually not afraid of bees when I see them but every once in awhile I get one that is most definitely following me and buzzing in my face and I try to run away in a panick. And of course they follow me anyway . Other than that I don't mind them at all because I was taught they won't bother me unless I bother them at a young age . Hornets and wasps are a whole different story though. I'm terrified

Grew up in rural Upstate NY in the heart of dairy country and was always seeing bees. Used to help our neighbor (dairy farmer) out with haying and the hay mow was hot and full of hornets and purple wasps. Got stung a few times, but usually if you don't swat at them or get too close to their nests there were no issues. Did a lot of woodchuch hunting and encountered lots of honey bees in the clover, but they were pretty docile. I always did my best not to mess with or hurt them. We liked them in our garden and always had enough dandelions to keep them fed in the early Spring. Great videos! Keep them coming.

I feel like bees are the most reasonable creatures. I think I've only been stung once. The idea of providing flowers for them always feels great.
