For context, this is the only time I’ve EVER seen a team need to call one of their 3 timeouts on the FIRST PLAY OF THE GAME. Timeouts are normally used to regroup, stop the clock, or change something in your team. They can be very precious toward the end of the half or the end of the game to manage time so they’re usually saved for later. Michigan were completely lost here and couldn’t hear a thought in their own head

The crowd gets loud (especially on 3rd downs) because they know they can effect the game. They disrupt the verbal communication between the QB and all 10 other offensive players. The play calls and adjustments get sent in to the QB by the coach on each play . If an offense doesn't convert on 3rd down they typically punt the ball away to the opponent on 4th down to push the other team far down the field. Instead of giving them a short field.

The more noise the crowd makes the harder the opposing team can hear the quarterback yell out plays which causes someone on the offense to move to soon and that’s a penalty called a false start. The noise can also cause the quarterback to take too much time trying to get their team to hear and therefore causes the play clock to wind down to zero which is a delay of game penalty.

There are thousands more people outside tailgating without tickets (attendance inside is about 110,000.) Some people are there in giant RVs most of the week! Lol! It was a tradition that started when the students all wore white shirts (something they all had) to show support and then it was for the whole stadium. There are lots of similar traditions now in other schools but the Penn State one has some sort of magic in the atmosphere. It is thrilling to be there, you can actually feel the excitement physically. It's something that I wish everyone could experience once in their lifetime! Btw, they are chanting "We Are Penn State." Another tradition that is rumored to have started in 1948 when a school didn't want Penn State to bring black players to the Cotton Bowl. And the team said, "we are Penn State, there will be no negotiation about this."

I’m a Michigan fan and it’s even nerve racking watching it live it’s literally defining on the field. Crowds get so loud to the point where talking is impossible before plays so teams that are struggling with crowd noise will switch to hand signals to hike the ball instead of the qb saying anything. Crowd noise can affect a game in these ways usually: delay of game, false starts and frustrating communication errors, which will frustrate the hell out of the head coaches because those penalties are considered small league undisciplined mistakes but there’s nothing that they can do sometimes when crowd noise prevents any form of communication.

To beat the other teamsso badly the hype was elimnated and all that was left was disappointment for their home fans. becaseu we knew next year theyw ere coming to OUR field and that meant a chance to make it two in a row. That is the killer instinct players play with. At the end of the day, home field advantage is worth apporximately 3 to 4 point per game on average. Scoring first as the visiting team puts that advantage to rest.
