For me this is one of the best synth tracks of the 80's and a perfectly arranged pop song.

for those that love the 80's music you must add Yazoo as one of the defining great sounds/bands of that era, a time that I will cherish for being the happiest decade of my life.

Can anybody imagine what would happen had Depeche Mode sung the song as originally intended? No offense because I love Depeche, but Dave Gahan had a pretty grating voice at the time & as catchy as the song was, there was no way that "Only You" would have been beloved as it still is had it been a Depeche Mode song. Depeche turning it down was a blessing in disguise because it allowed the amazing Alison Moyet to be discovered & Yazoo 2 exist & make such a unique combination of electronica & blues

I fully understand why DM rejected the song. Here's a guy (Vince), who was the founder and main songwriter in the band, leaving because he could not get full autonomy. He then goes to offer them a song, when he's already left the band. It's kinda like saying "hey, we all know me leaving is a tremendous loss for you guys. Here's a bit of my genius to help you get through". I'd pass as well. Rather make it on my own. Make or break.

This is not correct. The Flying Pickets covered this song, which was written by Vince (while still in Depeche Mode), not the other way round. Yazoo's original version hit the charts in 1982, The Flying Pickets cover of it was released in late 1983. "Only You" is a ballad written by musician Vince Clarke. He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, but recorded it after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet." Google " Yazoo Only You wiki" to read further details of the song.

@RocStarr913 I sort of agree. But Gahan back then, with tracks like "See You" has shown an ability to sing soft songs. Still, Moyet's voice has a soulful depth that Gahan's male voice would not have been able to duplicate.

I would love to ask Vince who his greatest partner was, singing wise. I know Alison regards him highest amongst high and I also know Andy Bell does too. I'd like to know out of those two extraordinary voices if he could pick one. I would never put the lad on the spot like that though cos he's blody brilliant and so are both of those mentioned. Erasure fan here btw.
