The show “powers that be” wanted them to have a lead singer (which you know they don’t), and wanted Austin or Tim. This was ten years ago-Home Free’s last album was updated versions of these songs. I wish you had done the video that has the judges’ commentary-it was so interesting to see what they had to say!
@melikka80810 ай бұрын
Yes...plus, they wanted them to have long, scruffy facial hair like the duck dynasty guys. I heard Tim say in an interview it was more like reality tv than just a music competition.
@patriciamcl549 ай бұрын
There are still complaints about a perfectly standard TV practice. There were hundreds of entrants on the show and letting groups continually switch leads would have confused viewers, who need to be able to identify favourites. You can see this at work in multiple TV talent shows. In any case, who could deny that Austin absolutely killed these songs? The pity for him was that the band didn't really use his talent properly afterwards.

Boy they were so good even back then. Yes, the producers wanted to highlight Austin and Tim and they wanted one of them to sing Colder Weather. Home Free insisted Rob do it and that was the one performance where the judges were the most critical. Interesting. They said Rob was shaky. I didn’t think he was. Anyway they won! I didn’t discover them til Covid and am so happy I did. Love them!!! Good one YB!!!😍😃
@patriciamcl549 ай бұрын
Not quite. The producers had to have featured leads for each band, not just for the songs but for the group opening numbers that for some reason are not in this compilation. Austin was the only one with experience in that sort of ensemble number, so it would have been insane to choose anyone else. The band nominated him and Tim to be the featured leads, then wanted to be the only group allowed to bend the rules. The judges did not say Rob was "shaky" but that his pitch wasn't secure, which it wasn't.

The judges comments are really very interesting. Perhaps watch them on your own. They got the Home Fries nickname here and met their current choreographer, Kristen Dennehy here. She still blocks all their concert moves. She attempts to choreograph their dance moves too. Lol, they claim they arent dancers, but....

There were high school and college groups amongst the contestants, it was obvious from the first episode that Home Free was a unit and comfortable performing for an audience. Ring of Fire was the turning point of the competition.

BTW Jewel is one of the best female singers of all times! She can sing anything and a very down to earth lady! I love everything she does! 🤠

This was filmed in 2013 right before Christmas. The judges were Ben Folds (glasses), Jewel and Shawn Stockman from Boys ll Men. The host was Nick Lachey from 98 Degress. Tim was actually the lowest bass on the show that season. Even though Geoff Castellucci was on the same season with Voiceplay. You may want to watch the judges comments part. I enjoyed watching your reaction to these songs.

Chris Rupp left in 2016 and that's when Adam Chance took his place. There are a couple of HF vides where they both appear: "House Party", "White Christmas" and on Chris's channel "What Child Is This". They were the only group that had such tight harmonies, a basso profundo, a power tenor and a killer beatboxer - they made the most of it. Chris & Adam started the band in 2001, Tim & Austin joined around 2011-12.

Love seeing these Sing Off shows as I never saw any of them live. What stands out to me is not only how young the guys look but the humility & support they give each other. No divas in this group. And Adam Rupp's talent already was head & shoulders above a lot of the other beatboxers at that time. Hard to believe he is even better now. It is also fun listening to the judges comments. They loved these guys from the start. Home Free is redoing all these songs from the "Sing Off" for their 10 year anniversary album, so you will be able to compare them now.

According to Tim, over the course of the show, the mother of one of guys in the Philharmonic group became a big fan and supporter of Home Free! LOL The producers tried to make it dramatic and have the groups talk trash about the other groups but they all got along, sharing their love of acapella that they had a hard time to get trash talk for the show! LOL As for the fan base and such...they already had a fan base. By this time they had already been performing for about 13 years and were doing it professionally, doing about 200 show a year. They toured all over the US and did shows on cruise ships as well. But the term Home Fries did come from this show when one of the judges (Ben Folds) jokingly called them Home Fries.
@pennymaple18179 ай бұрын
IIRC it was Joe's sister, not his mother? It was mentioned on Home Free History Ep 5 (on Chris Rupp's channel) with Austin and Tim.
@juniper6176 күн бұрын
Chris was the “baritone” in the group, so it was his job to take the lower parts-but he’s really more of a tenor. He was also a co-founder and the musical director of the group, but for the Sing-off he didn’t put himself forward in any performance and the judges never mentioned him at all that I can recall. But he didn’t seem bothered by it. The judges barely even mentioned Adam. They talked about Rob’s beard and were critical of his lead on “Colder Weather.” The focus on Austin and Tim was definitely driven by the producers.

Its crazy hearing their sing-off performances again... I've been listening to their stuff for so long, I can tell how much they've improved since the sing-off now that I'm listening to it again. Even crazier, is that I just realized that in the past few years, they've revisited most if not all of the songs they sang in the sing-off.

I remember watching this season, and on the first night, thought that Home Free didn't fit in the competition. The other groups had flashy costumes, lots of choreography, and sounded more like gospel or college a capella groups. In comparison, Home Free seemed a bit boring. After "Ring of Fire", it finally seemed they might win. Their experience helped keep them consistent. Bass singers (D2-E4) have always been a thing in US music. Johnny Cash, but also Barry White, Paul Robeson, Richard Sterban, Waylon Jennings, Harold Reid, Tennesse Ernie Ford. And more recently Garth Brooks, and Josh Turner.

This was in 2013. Now in 2024 for the last few months Home Free has been doing revamps of each song, videos that are really great. Each one has Home Free Version after the title. Life is a Highway also has a third video done 5 years ago subtitled Home Free Cover. I like to watch all three back to back. I think the only exception is Ring of Fire which they did previously with Avi Kaplan.

Love this, but wish you could hear the judges' comments. Chris Rupp has a series of videos on his channel, "Home Free History, Part _" which you would definitely enjoy watching on your own. This Sing Off season was when I discovered Home Free, and I've been addicted ever since! They began in 2001, won the Sing Off in 2013, and lost Chris/gained Chance in 2016. Their history is amazing. You're right about one thing. Home Free was the only group that gave the bass any recognition as lead or spotlight! I think that set them apart, aside from their phenomenal performances! VoicePlay was one of the other groups, but they had not yet learned to put Geoff forward. Too bad, but they've made up for it since.

If you want to go see or hear some older stuff from before The Sing Off I highly recommend these songs off their album Kickin’ It Old School from 2009, before Tim, Austin and Chance joined the group. These are audio only. King of the Road kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2XZoaqZm6tjirM (bass lead by Elliot Robinson) Under the Boardwalk kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4fXdICta791ppY (lead by Matt Atwood) Blue Moon kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4DdopWPgahsjbc (lead by Matt Atwood) Matt Atwood, lead tenor, is one of the original singers. It was Matt’s grandfather that helped financially support the group in the early days and it’s his (Matt’s grandfather’s) boat that they took their name from. Austin replaced Matt when he left in 2012/2013. The bass singer is Elliot Robinson and he is really good. Tim became the bass in 2010. Apparently they had several different bass singers over the years. To actually see them sing live check out Home Free on Chicago TV station WGN 3/25/2011 Hey, Soul Sister - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3jRlWWPnZZ5oq8

Nice that ya finally got to 'em, they're so good! Think the individual performances were linked for ya at the start of Home Free Reactions ... a lot of info there and explanations. Wading through it all, ya see the realization by HF themselves - the progression! And ya did mention their dress which was also a progression of "realization". The 1st performance was "we'll go and see; we'll do our thang, be seen and probably get voted off"; noticing they were definitely full of confidence --- and the crowd (world) went wild ... & never stopped. Ring of Fire was there Wow moment -- to themselves, judges (blown away), and the world audience. --- If ya got time, give it all a listen -- provides much more understanding. : ) Be Safe

He had been made to rehearse for long hours, including being featured in the final ensemble opening. The producers didn't seem to know that tenor voices are like racehorses, not good for hard work over a long period! His throat reacted and he went on not knowing whether his voice would stand up to it or if he could make the high notes.

This endless complaint. The band were asked to nominate two leads, in common with all the other groups. With hundreds of people in the show, how could they feature all of them? The band nominated Austin and Tim, as the best voices and best stage presence, particularly for the opening ensemble numbers. Rob had a lead (the band were the only group allowed to switch leads in this way).
