Because our last reaction to Pentatonix was so succesfull, we decided to do another one fairly soon. This song was the first request of a follower.

Mitch is an ultra-rare contra-tenor, so a lot of what you heard was NOT head voice or falsetto, but his actual natural range! It took me a while to be able to tell the difference between Kirstie & Mitch's voices, but there are subtle differences that are difficult to explain. Just to let you know, if you start reacting to Pentatonix (and there are MANY songs to choose from), we fans...the Pentaholics...WILL follow and you'll see your subscription numbers rise dramatically! Some recommendations I could make immediately are Daft Punk Medley, Hallelujah, Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Amazing Grace, Sing, Love Again (the last two are a couple of their own original songs), Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Mary Did You Know. They also just put out a new album made up of all original songs called The Lucky Ones, and it is a MASTERPIECE!

Yes, Mitch and Kirsten's voices are so similar and they take advantage of that in their earlier "on the couch" style videos often. It'd be great if you checked them out in their early days when they were not with a label yet and see how they've grown.

Haha, well Larry, I can definitely agree with the Pentaholics part! But are you sure in some of those high parts that he's not using his headvoice? Because it really sounds like he's using it at certain moments. A lot of these were already suggested, but I guess that's no surprise to you as a Pentaholic ;p Thank you for the reaction!

I think some people don't have an understanding of what head voice is, and for some reason they think that it's somehow denying his talent to say that he using head voice and/or falsetto. While Mitch does have an incredible range in his chest and mix registers, he was indeed using head voice in parts of this. 🙄 It has everything to do with placement of tone and resonance, and while their are some notes that he could hit in chest, mix, or head, it's an artistic choice to use whichever register is most suitable for the occasion, and to switch between them as needed.

@@YBPlaysMusic I said "a lot" of it was chest voice. Those high humming soars are definitely head voice. If you want to hear a stunning mix of his high chest voice and his head voice, check out his video with his side project Superfruit (a duo channel with Scott) of Frozen Medley, which also features Kirstie. He goes back and forth between the two effortlessly. The video is also funny as hell!

Mitch is a counter-tenor, Kirstin is a mezzo-soprano. They have very similar ranges and they can make their voices sound almost identical. They use that a lot in Pentatonix arrangements.

Mitch and Kirsti have such similar tones and range that it can sometimes be a real challenge to tell their voices apart. Kirsti is tremendous taking the lead in their cover of "Say Something" and Mitch does gets to really show off his range in a user posted video of their performance of Imogen Heap's "Aha" from the Star Vista is Singapore...he and Avi Kaplan (the original bass of the group) own the stage with their performances. Thanks for covering this one, definitly one of my favorites. Also check out their recent release of "Amazing Grace" - you don't have to be religious to appreciate the beauty and power of their performance.

Mitch is a contra-tenor with a huge range. Kirstie is a Mezza Soprano with a bit smaller range. These two give the group a lot of the vocals that make them unique. I read recently that all 11 of their albums made the Billboard 200 Top 5.

Fun reaction! It's such a joy to watch people fall in love with this group. I would love to see you react to their cover of Gold by Kiiara. Mitch is in full display with vocal acrobatics, Scott and Kirstie's harmonies so clever, and Avi and Kevin on bass & drums really bring it home. I would encourage you to watch the original first, even if you don't film a reaction to that one, just to appreciate what PTX, and Mitch in particular, are able to do without computers, synthesizers, or other electronic enhancements.

PTX deliberately had Scott and Matt split their verse AND Kirstin and Mitch split theirs. They released this as an audio track first, and many reactors were surprised at how close their voices sounded, when seeing the video for the first time. Again it was arranged this way for that effect. Thanks for your reactions. They are enjoyable to watch.

If your friend wants to hear more of Matt's "Singing" the bass line then watch their cover of Dreams by the Cranberries. You can really hear Matt's smooth bass throughout the entire song. Also interesting, many of the songs from that "Home" album they recorded while alone in their homes and then all their parts were mixed together in the studio. So impressive.

One of the big plusses with PTX is the individual range and skills each of them have, combined with an incredible skill in arrangement (Thanks, Scott!) that allows them to each cover and blend with at least one another. Kirstie and Mitch cover the mid to high range (although we're not sure just how high Mitch can go yet). Kevin has a beautiful tenor voice when he's not beat-boxing. Matt (and Avi before him) can from deep bass to a rich baritone. And Scott... he's techincally a Baritone, but can go from a great tenor down to full bass, to cover for Matt or Avi when they have a lead. He shows that range on 'Sounds of Silence.'

The Dutch sidebars are fun, the tern for moving up to a higher register in the song is called moving to a higher "key"(this song had three key changes), and yes, head or chest, that beautiful, thin yet powerful voice of Mitch's leaves us all a little breathless. A great thing about Pentatonix is that they play to the strengths of each of their members. so some songs focus on Scott's riffs, others feature the bass... everyone gets their moment. Would love to hear you react to something pre-2018, with their original bass, Avi Kaplan. His super-low register blew speakers regularly. Daft Punk medley, Bohemian Rhapsody or Gold are suggestions. Mitch can sing a beautiful counter-tenor which overlaps with Kirsten's mezzo. In opera, many mezzos that are strong in lower to mid-range sing 'pants roles', that is roles written for countertenors or high tenors. (Countertenors had often been castrati - something that the Catholic Church did with boy sopranos so they would keep their high voices. Now countertenors use well-developed head voices, even in opera. You'll hear them audition on various talent/voice shows singing arias like O Mio Babbino Caro.) Mitch, like Scott, has an amazing range.

I've been a PTX fan for 10 years so it's always a treat to those relatively new to the group get blown away by their performances. If you want to check out Mitch singing more in his lower register, you should check out their recent cover of Amazing Grace which features outstanding vocals from all 5 members and their older cover of a-ha's "Take On Me" (audio only, no video).

Would love to see your reaction to their cover of Gold by Kiiara. She had to use extensive production/effects to make her track, but PTX makes it look so easy even though their arrangement is wild. It's also a great introduction to Avi, the original bass who was with them until 2017 when chose Matt as his replacement. Avi and Kevin together are a legendary rhythm section!

Yes, Kevin sings beautifully, has perfect pitch, plays multiple instruments, speaks fluent mandarin - the list is endless. He played Carnegie Hall in both cello and saxophone. In falsetto Kevin can actually sing higher than Mitch. In case noone mentioned it, Scott takes over base when Matt or Avi in older videos, takes lead.

I guess Kevin is like the underdog of the group when it comes to singing capabilities. Because he does the beatboxing, people often probably don't even know he can sing and play instruments as well I think. He indeed deserves a lot of credibility too. Don't know who did but there were some comments with that bass explanation between Scott and Matt/Avi. Thank's anyway ;)
