YD100 Shift Kit - Expansion Chamber Update & Ride

SPOILERS: shift kit gave out on me. It dead.
About the bike:
This is a 29er on a a 23" frame with an internally geared hub + shift kit, the YD-100 kit, window piston, Oz reed, and an expansion chamber. This entire video is at 1/2 throttle. The engine is on it's break-in period and it's running so lean that I can't really go past 1/2 throttle anyways.
I'm hitting around 40mph. I can't wait to re-jet the carb and see what kid of power and speed I'll get out of this beast.

My personal suggestions are to get a tachometer, bicycle computer and mirrors. Hope you got your bike back to working. Though technically you aren't suppose to be under gas power at all on pedestrian/cycling path; I do commend you for cutting engine power and bell ringing when encounters happened. When in traffic where lanes aren't wide enough for Lane Sharing, the safest place for a MB'er is in the center of the lane establishing Lane Control. When you ride to the far right in narrow lanes it encourages motor vehicles to do squeeze bys.

Yes, I've been riding in the middle of the lane on my electric unicycle lately, as I'm moving away from motor bikes. This particular bike has been through SO MANY upgrades since this video and runs very well now. It occasionally snaps an exhaust bolt though. Needs a 2nd support.

LOTS! new carb, new reed, new transmission! All of which made this thing significantly faster and easier to use. Unfortunately my cam was facing down and u didn’t get any good shots. I’ll have to re-record.

Cool stuff. Do you know how many base gaskets are one your 100? They come with 2 in the kit.

If two came with your kit you should beware! The piston clips with saw them selves off after 400 to 500 miles of use! Replace them with Wiseco CW10 piston clips! It seems some of these jugs are not as thick as others on top and the cheap china spark plugs can hit the top of your piston. So they double up the gaskets for clearance issues. Also means you have an older type where the clips tend to saw off and destroy your motor over time! Replace them now while you still can!

Hey there, I love being able to shift. Getting CVT hub this week. Chain issues yes, but I added a washer to the right side JS sprocket and it seems to have solved all chain issues, hasn't popped off since. Riding again Tuesday with a group of scooters, we'll see how it does.

How much faster did the jackshaft kit make it

I feel like there's a bit more torque at low speeds (high RPM), a bit more available top end (gets up to 43 or so down hill), but that is due to the gear ratio in my rear hub. An actual chain shifter's top speed could differ. I didn't want to mess with chains falling off or anything like that. Overall, I would say the jackshaft kit LOWERS acceleration a bit due to the extra friction and opposing forces it adds to the drive train. But the fun factor increases 300% because you're ripping around town sounding like an F1 racecar 🏎️ lmao

it is difficult to start. I think the jackshaft kit steals some cranking power somehow, plus you can wheel start it anymore so you have a smaller radius to play with at the crank. I have to force kick mine and sometimes it won't even turn

With a shift kit, you can't "pop the clutch" to start it. With the clutch engaged, you have to basically kick start the engine with the pedals. It's rather difficult and requires quite a bit of force. If you shift to our lowest gear first it's a little easier.

You are not letting it rev out enough or that pipe is doing jack basically you have no power band.

The pipe is incredible, and feels much faster than the default pipe. The reason you aren't hearing a power band is because this is YD-100, which is much lower revving low end power. Also, as stated in the description, the default carb sucks and is running super lean. I have a new 24mm carb that's way more powerful and suited for this pipe. Sorry I haven't made a video with it yet. But soon!

I just let off the gas a bit and then shift the bike. I have the Inter 8 internally geared hub. Unfortunately the hub wasn't made for this kind of torque and has some missing gears. My new hub is much stronger and behaving better. New vids in the future :)

Top speed in lowest gear?

lowest gear is slow, about 10-15mph. Highest gear the bike can't keep up with, but I have a new carb and intake on the way. been up to 42mph so far.

that motor is now where near its power band goal is to be in the place where the engine makes most power, not in the top gear. imlo.

I stared clearly that i was aware its running lean. Ans this video is old. All these problems have been fixed a long time ago. Just havent gotten around to editing a new video together. It hits the power band like never before. Ive ridden 2 strokes since i was 12 so im pretty sure i know what I'm talking about, but i appreciate being blessed by your helpful knowledge.

In this video, it's the Inter 8 hub. It's fun, but not meant for this amount of power. Several gears are broken. I've since switched to Nuvinci N330 hub and it's much better, but even it isn't rated for m bikes. I should've paid the extra for a N380

@@keithlehman3382 I've heard good things about Rohloff, yes. Haven't looked into pricing or specs. Haven't heard of Kindernay. I would like to find a strong one though if I do another build, because I want to make a fat tire build with a four stroke, which adds a lot of weight. Thanks for the recommendations!

I believe you can only ride the MAC on the street but not a side walk.... MAC (Motor Assit Cycle). Knock out the silencer man! What's the point of having the expansion chamber? You might as well had stuck with the stock muffler then.. You want people to notice you... It's a safety feature you know. Specially in traffic.. Get Fred Head if you haven't already.

Expansion chamber increased my power and speed from 32mph to 42 mph. Worth it. See my other comment on the silencer removal.

Bt100 is a better engine kit in the vs yd100 is not better crappy casting and poor performance yd100. if you want a form its and quality the bt100 engine kit is for you

I'm aware of that law. I live in a small town in the middle of MO. I mainly ride on the road as you can see from this video (and upcoming vids). When I do ride on the sidewalk, I go slow. On bike paths, I cut the engine when passing folks (as seen in vid). Police have stopped to talk while I was riding on sidewalks in down town just to say they like my bike and ask some how I made it and general admiration, then tell me to be safe and have fun. I'm respecting people's space, riding safely, won't get tickets or warnings (in my location). I'm the only motorized biker here, so it's not like I'm giving anyone a bad name. I certainly wouldn't want to draw attention to myself by riding without the silencer all the time unless I'm going to be riding on main roads far from home. I might ride with it off occasionally for safety and audio test (upcoming vid!) but otherwise do not want to disturb local residence. I ride for fun and thrills, not for attention seeking. I'm still installing some upgrades, so feel free to check in in a month or two for an update. Try to chill on the sidewalk stuff though lol.
