I’m sure someone has probably already said this but I wanted to mention this, it was a common belief in old japan (it might be part of shinto belief) that items/things that are strongly cared for and/or loved can gain a soul of their own.

One extra point - the giant hands that Rin felt she 'had to stand on'? It's because she was *carried* everywhere, since obviously she couldn't walk herself. It's cool how many little hints there are about the twist, right from that very first dream/limbo segment. I actually guessed the twist very early because of this. If you look at how Rin is talking about stuff in the house, it jumped out at me how she's 'scared of fire' (presumably because she's made of paper/wood), how she doesn't bathe and instead just sits there and waits while Yuki does, and so on. I think the only time she mentions something she *does* do, rather than something she *doesn't*, is playing house with Yuki, which of course is a very traditional thing to do with dolls. And nobody in the cutscenes ever acknowledged anything she said, except for Yuki. I do feel for Rin. I guess she felt like she failed in her duty? She was meant to protect Yuki, but couldn't do anything about the poor girl's illness, so her spirit couldn't rest. Hopefully after the game, they're now together again, and can be friends for real in the afterlife. It's sweet to think that Yuki really did make a little sister with the love she gave Rin.

57:37 People who watch a lot of horror films eventually get desensitized - the nervous system adapts to stressful situations by reducing how strongly our body reacts. The same is probably true for games. Years ago I used to post on a forum where one of the users was upset because they could no longer feel the thrill of fear while watching scary movies. I think they decided to go cold turkey on horror, in the hopes that a break would re-tune their mind. Obviously the solution is not so simple for a horror-focused LP channel.
@mvsher5 жыл бұрын
That was really cute, I like how it's a horror game about a living doll that isn't evil, for once. Usually, horror stories with these kinds of dolls are about killer dolls but this was very wholesome and bittersweet.
@saoliath50005 жыл бұрын
There could be another subtext to what the main character is besides just a doll. Theres a type of spirit/ghost in japanese myth called a zashiki warashi. They have the appearance of children and are associated with the color red (like rin’s red obi). One of the ways they can possibly come into being is young children dying whoch may be why there are so many images of fetuses in the game even though it has nothing to do with yuki’s condition.
@ayame3165 жыл бұрын
neko mata thank you for saying this because the only thing that didn’t come together for me was the baby crying and the fetuses! I thought for sure Yuki was pregnant and Rin was actually the spirit of her unborn child.
@finn_in_the_bin52633 жыл бұрын
that's actually pretty damn close to what i was thinking! which is that Rin was a child that died long before Yuki's time and attached herself to her, so when Yuki died she no longer had that attachment and became a wandering spirit.

i think japanese mythos dolls if loved enough have souls.. thats why there are shrines for them
@spicybeantofu5 жыл бұрын
Also they used dolls in exorcisms to trap the bad spirita. Thats also why you see shrines of them. They gotta have up keep to keep the spirits in.

So at 1:22:54, and a few places before, the object in question looks a lot like where doll heads would be placed to dry, after being coated with the clay/gelatin layer they are given. I've watched videos of Hina being made, and I'm seeing a lot of imagery in this video that hints towards it. The dolls are basically bundles of straw, bound tightly in washii paper, and cut to a sort of chisel shape at top. The hands are sculpted from sticks of wood, then coated in the same clay/gelatin mixture that the heads are coated in, before the details are carefully sculpted into them. They are basically just hands and forearms, sharpened to a point, and stabbed into the sleeves of the doll. The kimono is made of layers of paper, carefully sewn together and wrapped. Also, as others have mentioned, the belief that much-beloved items will gain a soul of their own is very common. I am digging this gameplay so far!

You know, part of legends relating to cherry blossoms is that the beauty of the cherry blossoms came from the dead spirits buried beneath it. Originates from Kajii Motohirou's story if anyone's wondering why it's pretty prevalent.

Okay, I feel like I gotta say this. I'm only 55 min in and I think Rin is a doll and her sister is just pretending she's really there. I don't know if I'm right, but it seems way too coincidental. Edit: HOLY CRAP! THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS TO ME! I always call it and I ruin the surprise.... I really thought I wasn't going to be right this time tho
